Grapevine has it that intense lobbying has begun in the GOI regarding the CDS and the slot for Indian Army Chief. If rumour mills are to believed Lt Gen N.C.Vij is mobilizing the lobby of his supporters and well wishers to put the message across to Defence Minister George Fernandes that he is not interested in becoming the CDS. It is believed that becoming the Chief of Defence Staff would snatch away a lot of powers from him though he might just be apparently superior to all. What is noteworthy to mention here is that if N.C.Vij is promoted as CDS, then in all likelihood Lt Gen S.S.Mehta would take over as the Indian Army Chief.Meanwhile, also grapevine has it that a huge lobby is pressing hard from all directions that Lt Gen S.S.Mehta is not made the Indian Army Chief, If Lt Gen N.C.Vij is made the CDS. Lt Gen S.S.Mehta , who is now the GOC-in-C, Western Command, is due to retire in January and the lobby working against him is trying to ensure that nothing conclusive about CDS happens by that time. Is it a ploy to push him out of the race of Indian Army Chief??However, on the other hand Lt Gen S.S.Mehta finds a solid support from a huge quarter of the Indian Army itself. Rumour mill has it that Lt Gen S.S.Mehta's career record is matchless and even George Fernandes is quite appreciative of the Army Commander. What remains to be seen is whether Lt Gen S.S.Mehta emerge victorious amidst an ocean of unpleasant detractors.
