Who will be Foreign Secretary ?

With the Congress coming back to the government, the chances of present Foreign Secretary Shashank Gupta getting extension are reduced to zero since he is considered close to the VP. The earlier whispers of Shyam Saran (1970 batch), who is related to Yashwant Sinha and is presently Ambassador to Nepal, taking over as FS superseeding a large number of officers from 1967-69 batches have also died down. The emerging front runner is now Dalip Lahiri of 1967 batch. The only problem with him is that he has just taken over as Ambassador to France. The other possibility is K S Jasrotia, Ambassador to Bhutan, of the same batch. The game is still wide open and a lot depends upon the new Minister.

Grapevine has it that newly appointed Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce Rahul Khullar is being appointed OSD to the Prime Minister Designate Man Mohan Singh next week.1978 batch UT cadre IAS officer Khullar was PS to Man Mohan Singh when the later was Finance Minister.
