Name of Rakesh Mohan is believed to have been cleared for the post of Finance Secretary. He is currently Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. The post is falling vacant on October 31.

The reality about the IAS is what the public percieves them - the public considers them babus and nothing more. One of the biggest problem with governance in India is that the IAS feel that they can administer anything and everything in India. No wonder that they hog every senior post in India. The fact remains that since 1947 we have not tried any other system of running our government apart from giving the IAS a free hand in running the show. The country needs alternatives that would allow us to grow faster and defeat poverty. The IAS are great at supporting the status quo because most reform results in diminishing their power. If we can have competition in the private sector, we can have the same in the bureaucracy. And the competition needs to be fair, not one where the IAS themselves are the judges.
