Hydro sector executives to protest against Shahi ?

Executives working in the Central Hydro Utilities are planning to hold demonstrations and lodge other types of protests against RV Shahi, Union Power Secretary. The provocation for this is the failure of Union Power Ministry to approve 4 per cent incentive payable to them on the pattern of similar incentives being paid to executives working in NTPC, Powerrgrid and Power Finance Corporation.
The proposal to grant 4% incentive to NHPC executives was sent to the Ministry of Power in 2001. Since then, in spite of follow up, no action has been taken by the Ministry of Power. This is attributed to running fued between Yogendra Prasad, the then CMD,NHPC and RV Shahi. Now the other hydro utilities like NEEPCO, Tehri Corporation, Nathpa Jhakri Corporation , BBMB, etc. have joined NHPC in demanding this scheme to their respective Corporations.
Lightening strike leading to shutting down the hydro stations is also being planned, which may plunge the power system of the country into disarray. It is reliably learnt that the Officers Association of NHPC is working under the guidance of Yogendra Prasad, who has many grievances against Shahi.
NHPC executives are also perturbed due to the day-to-day interference of Shahi in the working of NHPC in the absence of a full time Chairman. The SLP filed by the Ministry of Power in the Supreme Court against the verdict of the Gauhati High Court directing the Ministry to immediately appoint S.C. Sharma as Chairman of NHPC is being quoted as another example of extra interest being shown by Shahi in NHPC.
NHPC executives are also worried as the Corporation is going to miss capacity addition program of 10th plan, funds utilization and inordinate delay in sanction of new projects. There is a lurking fear of the Corporation being handed over to NTPC. If it happens, it will be after 11 years that the NHPC executives will go to streets against the Ministry of Power. In 1994, the executives had protested against delay in appointment of a full time Chairman.
