Will NTPC actually have a new Chief ?

Interviews for the post of CMD, NTPC are scheduled to be held on 20th December, 2005.
The entire top brass of NTPC are lined up to try their luck. NTPC has a healthy tradition
of restricting senior appointments in the Corporation to departmental candidates.

T. Sankaralingam, senior most Director has an edge over others since he was shortlisted
for NHPC. However, that appointment is now blocked due to a legal case pending before
the Supreme Court. All other Directors have each their own merits. The IAS lobby is
interested to get a member of their clan to head this premier organization. Given a
chance, anybody would love to head NTPC because of its excellent record and very
good management systems.

Moreover, the restructuring of power utilities is overdue. Organizations like NHPC which
have been badly run are being thought of to be merged with NTPC. Power experts are
of the view that the strong corporate image of NTPC can cover up the poor performance of
other utilities if they are brought under its umbrella. The sick power stations of some of
the States taken over by NTPC are now performing exceedingly well. NTPC has never
been involved in any scam. Therefore, a strong lobby in the UPA want this Navratana
to be made more powerful to solve the chronic power shortage in the country.

Some watchers ofthe corridors of power still feel that nothing may materialize from
this interview. CP Jain has a very strong case for extension. They argue that if
Shahi can be given two years extension, why not Jain? At the same time, it is
also a well known fact that all extension proposals of the Ministry of Power including
that of Yogendra Prasad were rejected by the PMO, in spite of strong lobbying.

The story may not end on 20th. It will linger on till the last day of retirement of
CP Jain. This gentleman CEO is the pride of the public sector. His services
should be utilized by the country for some more years, many argue. Let
us keep on watching the Indian power sector.
