Lobbying for Secretary Power begins

Lobbying for Secretary Power 's post have stepped up following completion of one year of extension given to RV Shahi. Even though Shahi was given two years extension beyond superannuation last year, however, much water has flowed since then. The recent controversy involving NTPC and Reliance Industries Limited is largely going to impact the decision to further allow Shahi to complete one more year in the post. NTPC has moved the court against RIL about gas supply to its two projects. Circles close to RIL blame Shahi for goading NTPC to take the extreme step of filing a case against the RIL.
The capacity addition program of the power sector for the 10th plan period is far behind schedule. The implementation of the Electricity Act is also being questioned. There have been inordinate delays in filling up key positions in the central utilities.
The review of the performance of Shahi is tentatively expected to be in the first week of January.
Apart from the IAS lobby, even some of the technocrats are also in the race. One view is that Mr. C.P.Jain, CMD, NTPC who is due to retire shortly may be asked to done the cap of Secretary(Power) in view of his excellent track record. Among the technocrats, the name of RP Singh is also hotly being mentioned. If RV Shahi continues for one more year, problems with RIL are not likely to be over.
