PRAMOD MAHAJAN

I reached home and in the mail I found a letter from Pramod Mahajan. Pramod seems to be a 'chupaa rustom' poet as his letter is in prose!!

Kabh aaye ga mera chance,
Meri taraf kabh karro ge glance.

Ta ke sabh ko pathaa chale meri view.

I am just a phone call away,
And as you will be visiting Delhi to do my interview…mere ghar pe you can stay.

So call me and lets meet,
You like Shimla and we can meet there if you want to avoid Delhi's heat.

I had to go to Delhi for some work and so I called up Pramod and we agreed to meet at Taj Mansingh's Lobby Café.

I reached the venue at the appointed time and made myself comfortable and a few minutes later Pramod arrived and after we exchanged pleasantries I commenced interviewing him.

Me: I hear after the election debacle a Reporter questioned you ' Abh teraa ka kya hogaa Pramodh'!!!
Pramodh: And I told him ki maine desh ka namak khaya hai and am willing to face anything!!!
Me: But they say after the loss you were devastated!!
Pramodh: First I was flabbergasted then reality sunk in and after this I was devastated……. not personally but for the Party!!!
Me: Many say that you misled Vajpayee and gave false confidence!!!
Pramodh: As if Vajpayee Ji was a chota bachaa who knew nothing…….. this was a calculated risk!!!!
Me: Yes Sathaa (Power) is nothing but Sataa ( gambling)…by the way do you kow that China constituted a special team to find out why BJP lost!!
Pramodh: So this is how Indian Chop Suey was discovered!!!

The Waiter takes our order. I feel it is criminal to pay so much for a Coffee…..secret to charge exhorbitantly…..just make the name unpronounceable. I feel the Hotel is charging for the space we are seated on a minute basis. Leave the guests here the Waiters are also snobbish……this is very unlike Taj.

Me: Was India shining???
Pramod: India was shining but got mired in Congress's whining!!!
Me: But then that means that Congress has more credibility!!!
Pramod: No people tend to listen to the person who is bawling ….. underdog psychosis!!!
Me: What have you done with the Communication Centre you had put up!!!
Pramod: State of the art equipment…………I've got all the equipment mothballed for the next General Election. At first we tried to dispose it off the but could not as all who came to buy the it said they took the equipment to be unlucky…..you know how superstitious people are???
Me: Whose brainwave was it to play recordings of Vajpayee on people's mobiles.
Mahajan: See Mukesh Ambani informed me about the penetration of Reliance phones and so I felt this would be a novel idea to campaign.
Me: Seems BJP forgot that the real India lives in the villages …where if people were given free mobiles they would sell the mobiles to feed their hungry families!!!
Mahajan: Also people who received Vajpayee's call took it as a gimmick ….like the calls people get for tele marketing…..for the next elections we are getting technology whereby Advani or anyone leading the Party……his or her voice will be digitally encoded and with the data base we will make calls whereby the message will be made personal by the caller using the name of the person called…..like…….. Namsate Bharat Kumar …and then the message!!!

Coffee comes…is insipid and bitter. No cookies…….Taj usually gives cookies with hot beverages!!! I put extra sugar to cover up the bitter taste.

Me: Speaking of Leadership when the next elections come……..seems the second rung is restless to reach the top!!
Mahajan: Like in any area of work here too all aspire to reach the top.
Me: But if this is the case why do all BJP's second rung leaders say that they are not in the run for the President's post!!!
Mahajan: More because they do not want Advani Ji to feel bad!!!
Me: But this you agree that the second rung is jostling for space.
Mahajan: Arre with just one ladder and then place to seat just one at the top jostling will have to take place!!!
Me: Who will make the ultimate choice on who will ascend to the Presidentship???
Mahajan: Very complicated process……. unlike the Congress the process does not start from the top and goes down……in BJP it starts from the down and moves to the top.
Me: If you ask me the process starts outside the BJP and then comes inside and moves to the top…… why doesn't Advani take a protégé and then train him or her for the top post!!!
Mahajan: This is not a sport….here the conditions change every day….. you have to keep people hungry for power….this is a bonding factor. Say if Advani Ji chooses X ……. then A to Z , excepting of course X, will work to ensure the fall of X…….. this is politics. In politics vacuums are suddenly created and filled suddenly!!!

I think the Waiter realizes that Pramodh has not liked the Coffee. Now Pramodh is a valued customer and so in no time Earl Grey Tea arrives, the Hotel must be having info on the likes and dislikes of a valued customer like Pramodh. Seems this is the first time he has come to this Lobby Café.

Me: You are considered as Master of Elections in BJP??
Pramodh: But I failed the biggest exam!!!!
Me: But whenever there is an election either you or Jaitley are considered to plan and oversee the election!!
Pramodh: Elections……well first you dream (strategize) …..then you beam (campaign) and then you cream ( manage things and defeat)!!!!
Me: In fact I hear there was an Election is some African Country and one of the Political Party's even requested you to oversee the election there.
Pramodh: Arre bhai why are you pulling my leg……..see my left leg is already slightly longer than the right one!!
Me: You are so good at managing elections… but you've just fought one election yourself ???
Pramodh: Technically not 'always a bridesmaid and never a bride'…………..I've won from Mumbai once!!!
Me: Pity that BJP's star election overseers do not fight elections themselves…..you've fought once in your long political career and Jaitley has never fought a election!!!!
Pramodh: Why Jaitley Ji has fought Delhi Cricket Board elections….and please remember that Cricket Board elections are equally politicised as political elections!!!

The Lobby Manager comes and is apologetic that Pramodh did not like the Coffee.

Me: You were instrumental in getting many Bollywood actors to side with BJP in the General Elections!!!!
Mahajan: Arre without them elections would get boring…… I did it for the Public, so that they enjoy the elections!!!
Me: But seems you just hyped up things a bit too much!!!
Mahajan: Arre both politics and films there is glamour…… dono me acting hothi hai, dono mein you are as good as your last hit!!!

Pramodh beckons for the cheque. The cheque arrives with chocolates. Seems they want him to go with a sweet taste in his mouth!!!!

Me: You've done B.Sc in Physics and then you did your MA in Political Science…..what did you think Political Science is a science like physics.
Pramod: Well I've done both and many Physics ke principals are applicable in Politics….take any of the 15 fundamental laws of Physics and all apply to Politics. Now lets take Newton's Third Law of motion..…when one body exerts a force on another, the second body exerts on the first body a force, equal in magnitude but opposite in direction: action and reaction are equal and opposite……you see this in Politics all the time.
Me: Yes looking at BJP's situation today two of Newton's Laws come to mind…..Newton's first Law of motion….Every body persists in its state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line unless it is acted upon by some external, unbalanced force….and Newton's second law of motion………..The force required to accelerate a body is proportional to the product of the mass of the body and the acceleration produced.
