Three names cleared for CBEC Member !

Names of three 1970 batch IRS (Customs) Mssrs Chitra Saha, Sudhir and Shri Krishna are reported to have been cleared for the posts of Member Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) at the highest level.

No place for seniormost official in CBEC !

1968 batch IRS, Subhash Chandra, is the senior most official after the retirement of present Chairman CBEC A K Singh on July 31. He is however, being by-passed on the plea that he had opted for CEIB. Normally it has been a practice that seniormost official was always made Chairman and next in seniority was made DG , CEIB. This tradition was strictly followed in the past and officers like S D Mohile, Sukumar Shankar, B P Verma and M K Zutshi were all DG, CEIB before becoming Chairman. Wait for the decision of the Manmohan Singh Government.

POWER BROKERS

I happen to be sitting at Gaylord's in Connaught Place this rainy morning and enjoying my Coffee. Every morning, excepting on Sunday's, people from various walks of life get together to have their tea or Coffee and Patties. Now if you are privy to their conversations you will get the feeling that the Government moves as per their directions. Some time back these people showed as if they were on first name terms with Atal and Lal Krishna and now they show their proximity to Sonia and other Congress Leaders. I recognize a friendly face in one of the group's and lift my cup to wish him and he responds similarly and then beckons me to join him.

Intros…… I am introduced to the other two…… Chopra and Puri …my friend's name is Kulbhushan and his pet name is Bhushan.

Chopra: Communists di ho gayi wah bhai wah!!
Puri: Yes they have Congress running in circles.
Chopra: Mera Lal Salaam to the Communist…..the other day I met Yechury and told him enough is enough now they should put their foot down!!!
Bhushan: Dekho ji Sonia is even cutting short her holiday …she's returning to Delhi to placate the Commies!!!
Puri: Today morning I was taking a walk with Patel and Fernandes and I told both that it is time Congress took the Commies by the horns!!
Me: Patel and Fernandes ….sounds like a Law or CA firm…… and Ahmed and Oscar sounds like a Music Director duo or Stunt Masters in Bollywood!!
Chopra: What does Congress think of itself……taking Commies for granted!!!
Me: Fact of the matter is that the fuel hike took place with the tacit support of the Commies ….see the timing……..and disinvestments in BHEL is no big deal ….. Commies are just trying to pander to their constituency!!!

Seeing these people show their proximity to Leaders I am reminded of a true incident. There was this businessman and small time politician in Delhi's machinery market who was always in debt. Whenever a creditor came he would press the ringer on his mobile and sham he was answering the ring. He would pretend he was talking to the PM and then excuse himself saying that PM had called him immediately. Till one day while he was sham talking on his mobile his mobile actually rang. Well, the creditor present got his dues.

Puri: Yesterday I met Satish…….yaar Satish Sharma……and he told me that he was going to be inducted in the Cabinet!!
Chopra: Arre Satish has been saying this since Congress came to power!!!
Puri: I met him at the Tailor's where he was getting his politician waala wardrobe refurbished!!!
Bhushan: Main suniyaa hai ( Punjabi for I've heard) ki PC di ho rahi hai chutti!!
Puri: Ho hi nahi sakdaa…..not possible!!!
Bhushan: O jee ….. kal PC met me at a Party and he looked very nervous….. took me to the side and said…..mujhe iss reshuffle mein bachao!!!!
Puri: Yaar you say that Sonia takes your advice …….. yaar tell her that PC is a Diamond…….please do not remove this Diamond !!!!
Chopra: Why all this secrecy……. I feel even Manmohan does not know what is going to happen in this reshuffle.
Me: No doubt Sonia does have the final say. But, she does rely on Manmohan's advise. In fact if Renuka goes it will be because Manmohan has got his way…….after the revelation about Renuka recommending a gun Manmohan has been gunning for her.

On the next table tempers are high……….. two gentleman have crossed swords on their proximity to Pawar. Both boast that they are Pawar's childhood chums but fail to recall each other.

Bhushan: BJP noo kee ho gaya…… what's happened to BJP??
Puri: One problem after the other……… Vajpayee Ji met me the other day and he too was pained by the situation in BJP!!
Bhushan: The other day there was a private screening of Bunty and Babli and I met Advani Ji……. he said that BJP would emerge stronger!!
Puri: Arre my wife saw Babli and Bunty and said that she would go on a diet…… seems this movie makes people say impossible things!!
Chopra: Seems that the way the second rung is fighting the Leader who ascends BJP's throne will get a very lean and mean BJP!!!!
Me: After loosing Power political Parties do go through the Blues……but seems BJP is having an extended Blues phase. And though the second rung profess that they are not in the run for the President's post fact is they all dream of becoming the Party President!!!! Ambition chup nahi sakthi banaawat ke bahano se!!!!

There is a traditional way of eating Patties here. The upper crust of the Patty is loose and you are supposed to put chilly vinegar and sauce into the Patty. The tea is exceptionally strong and bitter. I order a Cold Coffee and Cheese and Tomato grilled sandwich. The others look at me as if I have sinned and I change my order.

Puri: Kal Amar Singh milyaa si…….met me at a Wedding Reception… says that he has been advised to break the A trio!!!!
Bhushan: Yaar Rajiv Shukla met me the other day and he mentioned that he was trying to make Sonia and Amitabh talk to each other!!!
Chopra: Not possible……..you know they say Sonia is behind Ajitabh penning book on Amitabh!!
Puri: Yaar what will be the title of this book……… Bhaiyaa, Saiyaa ( lover) aur Rupiyaa!!!
Bhushan: Yaar I hear Saharashrre Roy has made friends with Harkrishan Surjeet!!!
Puri: Yaar I think his health rumor was just PRO stunt…….. because they say Roy is a smart boy!!!
Bhushan: But Anil will have to re-think his dostis…… from businessman to politician to rebel to businessman……he has come a full circle!!!
Me: Mummy kehthe hai Anil kaam karre gaa, Papa ki tarha naam karegaa…….. Anil has quite a few decisions to make!!!!

In London they say of you throw a stone it will land on a Shah or a Singh . In Delhi if you throw a stone it will land on someone in power or a Power Broker!!!
