IMAGINARY INTERVIEW

ANIL AMBANI

I was last to board my flight from Delhi to Mumbai . As I passed through the business Section I noticed that there was just one passenger in this section……and this passenger was none other than Anil Ambani.

Before taking my seat in the Economy section I took out my visiting card and wrote on the back of this card……Hullo Somebody would you care to give an interview in air to a nobody??? I handed the card to the Steward in the Business Section and requested him to hand over the card to Anil, which he very reluctantly agreed to do.

The flight took off and once the seat belt sign was switched off an Air Hostess came and returned my card to me. On the card Anil had written…… Hullo Nobody …your place or mine??

I walked over to the Business Section and wished Anil and he asked me to sit in the adjacent seat.

Me: Seems the entire Section is empty???
Anil: Yes I've booked the entire Business Class on this flight.
Me: But why didn't you fly in your Private Jet???
Anil: Mukesh just does not let me take it!
Me: Why do you have to take his permission??
Anil: Not at all…..but he keeps the Jet on call all the time and being the Chairman he gets preference!!!
Me: Why don't you get a dedicated Jet for yourself???
Anil: Yaar today I am worried if I will be able to keep my Merc and you are talking of a Jet!!!
Me: Is it that bad???
Anil: No yaar….a few hundred crores less would mean that I would be just a little less stinking rich!!!

The Airhostess comes with the perfumed hot towels and we both pick up a towel each.

Me: What is this spat between you and your brother???
Anil: Clash of personalities….he is an introvert and I am an extrovert. I jog in public and he does it on his treadmill in his bedroom.
Me: But this is a minor thing!!!
Anil: Not at all……. Mukesh being an introvert wants to keep everything within his circle…..I being an extrovert look at the broader picture…..like the shareholders!!
Me: You've just given a new twist to introvert and extrovert!!

The Captain announces that there is turbulence ahead and advises all to remain seated and to keep our seat belts fastened.

Me: Now the news is that your Mom will slice the cake and you brothers will choose your individual slices !!!!
Anil: Yes but now the tiff is as to who will choose first…….. I say that being the younger one I should get the first choice but Mukesh says that being the older brother he should get the first choice.
Me: He came first into the World and so he must get the first choice!!!
Anil: (irritated) How come??? We always talk of level playing field and as he got a head start in the World on me I should be given the first choice.
Me: What do you want???
Anil: I'll respond with what I do not want….I do not want Reliance Infocom…. this is Mukesh's baby and he should take care of it!!!!
Me: But what was Dhirubai's vision???
Anil: That Reliance should be Number One in whatever business it undertakes!!
Me: Nothing about you two brothers working side by side??
Anil: The goal is what matters!!
Me :Jointly or singularly ??
Anil : Does that matter as long as the goals are met???

The Airhostess brings our breakfast trays.

Me: They say Dhirubhai had always advocated that Reliance should be politically neutral!!
Anil: Humbug….. we are in with whoever is in Power. In fact we have a in house Political Affairs Committee that ensures that we display our support to the Party in power…….like a year back Vajpayee's photographs adorned our walls and today Sonia's photographs adorn our walls. This Political Affairs Committee also ensures that we lend our shoulders to the Opposition to cry on……like Journalists on different Party beats we too have professionals who are on different Party beats.
Me: But you have aligned yourself with a Political Party!!!
Anil: My step was more to align myself with Politicians and that is why I became one. Political affiliations blur once you are a politician. All this animosity we show towards each other is just for Public consumption.
Me: But don't you feel that Congress is anti Anil after you joined SP??
Anil: Where did you get this idea that Congress is anti SP or anti Anil???
Me: But….
Anil: We are supporting Congress in the Centre……Congress is supporting us in UP……. SP is an ally on hold…nothing more nothing less!!!
Me: What did you tell Sonia when you met her just before the General Election results were to be announced!!
Anil: Yaar I told her that Mulayam had pledged his amar support to her and that she should have reliance on his pledge!!!
Me: What happened???
Anil: Congress has put us on hold and we have put Congress on hold…… their hold tone is ' You are in queue please wait'……our hold tone is the song ' Chotti si duniya hai pehchane raaste hai kabhi toh milenge toh pooche ge haal'.

Anil excuses himself and goes to the loo and returns after some time.

Anil: Seems I had too much to eat at Amar's bash last night!!!
Me: That reminds me your mooh bolaa bhai Amar is hated by the Congress!!!
Anil: Yaar at last night's Party there were so many Congressmen that I felt this was a Congress bash!!! How can anyone hate rolly - polly Amar???
Me: Surprising because as per my info no Congressman wants to be seen within one mile of Amar??
Anil: I told you out of public view distances and affiliations blur….then we are just politicians!!!
Me: What about all the heartburn after Sonia's celebration Party post the General elections???
Anil: Yaar all I know is that Amar got a severe case of heartburn after the Party and is still under treatment……just mention the Party and Amar runs for an antacid…….don't read too much into it…..just a medical problem….he loves Jalebis must have had one too many.

Anil requests for some fruit juice and I request for tea.

Me: Some personal questions…….what do you like to eat ???
Anil: Sandwiches with pumpkin sauce from the vendor outside Maker Chamber III , sukaa bhel form the bhel waala on Dalal Street and maskaa masala mysore dosa near Amitabh's house …..and yes Pista Ice cream from K Rustom and Sitaphal Ice Cream from Natural !!!
Me: Following Kipling's If…… Or walk with the Kings - nor loose the common touch!!!
Anil: No no ….. I really like the stuff…I am a roadside food junkie!!!

The Captain announces the plane is going to land and asks us to fasten our seat belts.

Me: Any dreams???
Anil: I want to run the New York Marathon and win it.
Me: Any other dreams???
Anil: If I divulge these dreams then these dreams will lead to me getting nightmares!!!
Me: Your detractors say that you want to become the CEO of India Inc.???
Anil: (laughs) Karr lo India mutti mein!!!

The plane lands…..smooth landing.

Me: So now straight to the Office???
Anil : Yep……..and then have got a heavy party schedule at night.
Me: Do you bump into Mukesh in any of these Parties???
Anil: Yaar like I told you he is a introvert…….he parties at home or within in his own very close circle!!!
Me: But you guys must be having something in common???
Anil: Ambani and Reliance !!!

Anil moves out and I go back to the Economy section to pick up my hand baggage. I reach home in the evening to find a invitation card waiting for me……the card says….Hullo Nobody….wanna Party on the ground with a Somebody ????
