ATAL BEHARI VAJPAYEE

I've been trying to interview Vajpayee for quite some time. However, despite my numerous requests there was no response from Vajpayee. I decided to take a chance during Vajpayee's vacation and I reached Manali. Next morning I reached Vajpayee's cottage at Pirni and handed over my visiting card to the SPG fellow at the gate.

Behind the card I wrote…….. I apply but you no reply…this is the last time I will apply!!! I think I was able to get his attention with my request in verse and the SPG fellow with a crooked finger asked me to enter.

Vajpayee was sitting in the lawn trying to keep the sun from his face. I did a Namaste and he responded and asked me to take a seat and I did so.

Vajpayee: Bharat ask your questions I will reply only in verse…..remember in poetry I can be polite , serious, humorous and terse!!
Me: Sir why is BJP in such a flux???
Vajpayee: Power ke baad this does happen…..things do slacken!!!
Me: BJP's second rung is creating problems???
Vajpayee: Sataa ka hai yeh khel……all want to pass and nobody wants to fail!!!
Me: But is it true that BJP is going through Leadership labor pain???
Vajpayee: I do not know about pain….but BJP ko yeh infighting karr rahi hai stain!!!

The staff bring in a jug of juice and glasses. Vajpayee picks up a glass and asks me to pick up the other.

Vajpayee: Bharat this juice is ekdum pure….(takes a big sip) pure for sure!!
Me: What went wrong with BJP's Shining India campaign??
Vajpayee: Chalo hum ne sochaa India karr rahi thi shine……for this misunderstanding we have paid the fine!!!
Me: What lesson has BJP learnt from this loss???
Vajpayee: Elections are not won on the back of technology…… like Laloo you need a lot of fakeology!!!

The staff refill our glasses and bring in some namkeen.

Me: Congress says that BJP is not getting over its loss??
Vajpayee: We are coming to terms with our loss……..but UPA ne all Democratic norms to kiye hai toss!!!
Me: But Sir BJP has stayed out of Parliament most of the time!!!
Vajpayee: We cannot be mute spectators to this rape of Democracy……..we cannot lump down UPA's autocracy!!!
Me: But isn't Parliament the place where you should raise these questions???
Vajpayee: Laloo has made this Sarkaar deaf and dumb……. made Sarkaar to probity ek dum numb!!

Vajpayee's foster daughter comes out and informs him that his favorite trout fish dish is being cooked for lunch and is to be accompanied by a pure Himachali fare.

Me: UPA has rated BJP very lowly as an Opposition …how do you rate UPA???
Vajpayee: Andher nagri chaupat Sarkaar………aam aadmi ko padh rahi hai maar!!!
Me: How do you rate Manmohan???
Vajpayee: Good, honest and capable…… parr lagh gaya hai Manmohan Ji parr ineffective ka label!!!
Me: Sir why does BJP say that Sonia is Super PM???
Vajpayee: In this there is no lie…….. ask Manmohan Ji this question and then see him sigh!!!
Me: But some say that Manmohan is administrative PM and Sonia is political PM???
Vajpayee……. Sonia Ji can question Manmohan Ji but Manmohan Ji cannot do so, to Manmohan ji Sonia can say no but to Sonia ji Manmohan Ji cannot say no!!!

Staff brings in cut fruit and home made ice cream. And Vajpayee digs into the 'fruit cream' and bids me to do the same.

Me: Are you satisfied with the progress in CBMs??
Vajpayee: Slow and steady wins the race…….. but extend one hand in friendship and in the other hand show you hold a mace!!!
Me: What did Mush tell you when he met you recently ???
Vajpayee: He wanted to know that who does Manmohan Ji keep talking on the cell phone….. even in one to one meetings seems Manmohan Ji is not alone!!

Vajpayee's throat is getting dry and the Staff get Lassi……. he takes a big sip and his Man Friday wipes the proof of the Lassi from his lips.

Me: On the economic front how do you rate this Sarkaar???
Vajpayee: They inherited a very sound financial condition……… couldn't have asked for a better position!!!
Me: But PC says in BJP rule rich got richer and poor got poorer!!!
Vajpayee: But now this Sarkaar will make poor poorer and rich poor…….. is embarking this Country on a Commie tour!!
Me: What do you say about India's dream team…..Manmohan, PC and Montek??
Vajpayee: What about me, Panth and Jaswant…..we made India balwant!!!

Vajpayee's throat is irritating him and he asks his staff to get ginger tea and the tea arrives and is served to him and me.

Me: Why is this Sarkaar after George???
Vajpayee: Georgie Porgie pudding and pie …….. berated Sonia and Congressis raised the revenge cry!!!
Me: But….
Vajpayee: When the Courts will come into play……… all the allegations will be washed away!!!
Me: BJP says that UPA is on the revenge trip!!
Vajpayee: Do not throw stones while seated in a glass ka ghar………breaking the glass of your own house should be your darr!!!
Me: Will UPA complete its term???
Vajpayee: We wish they complete their term but we expect they will not do so…….. we are prepared for their five year stint but feel before this they will go!!!
Me: Why???
Vajpayee: The reason for the doomsday predictions is the UPAs internal contradictions.

Me: Now Sir they've made you into a Father figure…….. means they've retired you??
Vajpayee…….. Na mein hoo tired na mein hoo retired………..yes the way it looks I have been politely and honorably fired!!!
Me: Sir how would you like your term as PM to be remembered???
Vajpayee: India aur Indians ko kiya lift………from pseudo secularism India ko kiya shift!!!
Me: Sir I am a fan of yours and my writings do reflect this…….aaj ki rajnithi mein aap ko kartha hoo miss!!
Vajpayee: Arre wah pehle application in verse and now in closing too……tell me are you a khulaa aam poet or like bathroom singer you are a poet who recites poetry only in the loo????
Me: Mein poet toh nahi….magar Vajpayee Ji…….bekaari mein mujhe poetry aa gayi!!!

I shake his hand respectfully and warmly and leave. As I come out I feel my stomach is revolting……I run to a Chemist and take some antacid…….juice and then more juice, home made ice cream, lassi and then ginger tea……and that too in less than an hour…….Vajpayee sure does have a stomach that is far younger in years………I am years younger but my stomach really tired and another hour with him and my stomach would have retired.
