Will NTPC take over Hydro utilities ?

National Thermal Power Corporation has changed its name to NTPC LIMITED on the eve of its completing 30 years on November 7 as announced in the big advertisement of the Corporation and the area of its operations has also been increased to include all forms of electricity , distribution, etc. This brings to focus high targets fixed by the Corporation for the next few years. How the Corporation will be able to achieve these targets? One way is to absorb all the other hydro power utilities like NHPC, NEEPCO, THDC, NJPC, BBMB. This will substantially improve its umbrella of generating and capacity addition power. NTPC had made a bid to take over NHPC a few years back. However, the attempt failed due to media hype created by NHPC at that time. This time, NTPC is not likely to face much difficulty because of the absence of a strong CMD in NHPC and media experts who could simultaneously manipulate the electronic and print media to the disadvantage of NTPC. Other hydro utilities are too weak to offer any resistance. According to grapevine, CPC Jain stands a good chance to get extension if he pilots this type of proposal for which he will have strong support of RV Shahi, Secretary (Power). In such a situation appointment of full time CMD, NHPC will further get delayed. Time to watch the corporate games in the power sector.
