AN IMAGINARY INTERVIEW WITH - Pranoy Roy

After completing my four kilometer walk regimen I sit down on a bench in the Park to rest for a while. While resting I gaze around and spot Pranoy Roy doing a semi jog and walk. Pranoy's face is one of the most recognizable faces and is synonymous with the elections.

As luck will have it Pranoy comes and plonks himself on bench on which I am seated.

Me: Hi Pranoy……. I'm Bharat Kumar!!
Pranoy: Hullo and its Dr. Pranoy Roy please.
Me: Okay will keep that in mind.
Pranoy: Thank you…… I know of a Bharat Kumar who pens political satire in prose.
Me: Present in front of you in flesh and blood!!!
Pranoy: Well then I have an axe to grind with you.
Me: I want to ask you some questions….. why don't we do a Walkie Talkie???
Pranoy: Not a bad idea!!

This is a Park where many VVIPs and VIPS come for a walk. And Laloo walks past us and wishes Pranoy very wamly.

Me: People feel that Laloo is a creation of NDTV!!!!
Pranoy: First time I'm hearing this.
Me: Funny but I've heard some people comment that Laloo is a sleeping partner in NDTV!!!
Pranoy: What……. Laloo is neither a sleeping partner or a dormant investor….. but I cannot vouch for the fact whether he is a shareholder????? But what gives people such an impression???
Me: NDTV's favorite politician is Laloo…. see your programmes…..Laloo receives maximum coverage. In fact in one of the programmes Laloo shows his proximity to Rajdeep Sardesai by serving him rice with his hand …..the same hand he has just used to eat his food and which has the remnants of the previous application still on it!!!
Pranoy: And do you know that Rajdeep did not eat anything for the next week…so disgusted he was???
Me: But the opinion is that NDTV works like Laloo's mouthpiece!!!
Pranoy: Not at all…. Laloo sells…. people want to see him because of his buffoonery ….. you know clown acts are most popular in circuses!!!

Diggy passes us panting and catches up with Laloo and both of them start walking together!!!

Me: What does your psephology say for the upcoming Bihar elections???
Pranoy: Too early…….since the General Election NDTV is the last to make any psephological deduced predictions. We wait for others in the Print and Electronic Media to come out with their predictions and then we come out with our predictions. NDTV has a 'time tested' formula for making predictions!!!
Me: Formula …..who are you kidding…..last time I was following things and I found that your predictions were just an average of all the other predictions!!!
Pranoy: Not at all…. Dorab Supariwalla and I have done a lot of research and we have devised a system for making predictions…its all in the brains!!
Me: As I see it its all in the finger tips……. seems Dorab collects the predictions of others in the Media and you take out the average using your calculator using your finger tips!!!
Pranoy: Not at all……. its a scientific system that I have devised…… that is why I have ordered all NDTV personnel to address me as Dr. Roy so that viewers realize that a Doctorate holder is talking….. in fact I am contemplating that in my next election programme a ticker will run on the screen that will inform viewers of my Doctorate!!!
Me: I would have advised you to inform viewers via the ticker of your psephelogy track record….but looking at your record…… sorry wrong number!!!
Pranoy: We always let our viewers know that in our predictions there could be a plus or minus error!!!
Me: And this Statutory Warning is your escape chute!!!

Pranoy seems a little agitated and is taking deep breaths and I decide to change the topic.

Me: You and Dorab never change your ties when you both appear on the Election programmes.
Pronoy: You see Dorab is a die hard Congressi and he feels that the tie he wears is lucky for Congress!! As for me this is the only tie I own……..like my phobia for flying I have a phobia about changing my tie!!!
Me: Yes Dorab reeks of Congressism ….but then is it right to get such a biased person on such a programme????
Pranoy: Well Congress sponsors Dorab …… you know Dorab has been receiving offers from various advertisers to star in their campaigns but Dorab has refused!!!
Me: Seems Dorab Supaiwalla has taken supari from Congress!!!!

An industry bigwig passes us and Pranoy and he exchange pleasantries.

Me: Now they say that Pranoy is no longer an active Media man ….he's now more involved in the financial nitty-gritty.
Pronoy: Not at all I still anchor news and other programmes on NDTV. Come elections and I am on the tube for hours. You see I have a battery of professionals who man my finance department and advise me on financial matters. This is innovativeness at its best…….you see we had to get close circuit cameras installed in our Finance Department and then it struck me why not convert the footage into a TV programme!!!
Me: Hope you do not install close circuit cameras in the toilets and start a Adult Channel…..NDTV Mazaa.
Pranoy: Very funny…….. don't forget I make the jokes!!!

We reach a bench and we sit down to rest our legs.

Pranoy: Now I have a few questions for you……. why don't you lampoon some other channel??
Me: Simple …. NDTV is the channel I rely on for my news!!
Pranoy: But then why lampoon the channel you like!!!
Me: You criticize everyone on your programmes…… I am sure you can take some of the medicine you spoon out to others!!!
Pranoy: Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down….. well your saying that NDTV is your choice for news is the spoonful of sugar in your case….. I was really itching for a big fight with you!!!
Me: Now that you've mentioned big fight….. after Rajdeep Big Fight is just not the same. Vikram is good but he takes sides and form a mediator he becomes a participant.
Pranoy: Chalo Vikram is learning…. I'll ask Barkha to give him some tutoring…… after all she runs a more broad based Big Fight…..We The People!!
Me: Your Double Take is too good….. when will we get to see a puppet of Dr. Roy???
Pranoy: Well one day the anchor puppet Prem Taneja will take off his mask and you will see the puppet is actually mine!!!
Me: Vajpayee recites poetry at the end of Double Take and so I'd like to end this meeting of ours in prose…… Nice meeting you Mr. Roy, My request is please do not become Laloo's or Congress's toy, Remember people see through this ploy, Yeh jo public hai yeh sabh jaanthi hai Mr. Roy!!!!
