Be a Leader rather than Superior!
Today we are celebrating the Civil Services Day. This is an ideal time to positively ponder over the role of various Services and their interse relationship for purpose of improving their profile and governance for the people. Rather than fighting over petty issues like who is superior. Perhaps forgetting that we are in a democratic republic, centuries away from the feudal past.
The ARC-II is also in position as a platform to help work towards such an enlightened era where everybody can co-exist with self-esteem and perform their assigned role with dignity. Who are we to fight over who is superior-a doctor, who saves life; a soldier who protects life; an administrator who coordinates and manages vital links in time?
As the Premier Service, both interms of their number and reach because of their role, the IAS should take the lead in revitalising the entire Civil Service and ushering in a new era for the benefit of all services and the people? Let the true role of a genuine leader be played with perfection.
Gopal Nair, New Delhi
Alas ! if the following are also form part of the agenda for the Civil Services Day:
-the need to adhere to the official working hours as a measure of their family welfare. Life of their family members is not less important than their effort to please their political bosses.
-360 degree evaluation system for their elevation should be tried.
-A refersher course each year to remind that the public is the master for whose welfare all paraphernalia of government machinery is meant.
