FORUM

Parents before marrying off their daughters normally ensure that their would be husbands or in-laws have a house to accommodate their betis and treat them as new members of the family with due respect and affection.
But these simple customary enquiries had not been adequately undertaken by the ISS cadre before opening up the flood gates of promotion and posting to the newly created posts of HAG and SAG. Result is that most of them are suffering from persona non grata syndrome. Except getting a fatter pay packet at the end of the month they don't have a room to sit, nor a car to get picked up and dropped, nor even a telephone to talk sweet nothings- not to speak of the work they are expected to do. Some are seen with a victorious smile by dislodging their juniors to occupy a room, some are giving a finishing touch to the draft anonymous complaints, while a lot more are engaging themselves in their old traditional habits of mud slinging and looking for an opportune time to pull down one another the way the crabs do when kept in a basket. An army of recently posted SAG officers in the field offices of NSSO are required to do the same work as were done by the junior-most level officers while the cadre is having the last laugh. In the process, the due weights of the senior level positions got diluted and they are left to their luck counting the days ahead for superannuation. The summary is that sadness has become their forte, a thing of luxury and pastime and like most of the Indian married women they are a harried lot with regretful memories of bitter honeymoon, taking care of the husbands they don't like, giving birth to babies they didn't plan.
