Majority of CGHS (Specialist Cadre) retires after 25 years

I would like to bring to the notice of every one that plight of CGHS officers. There are two cadres one GDMOs and other Specialist(Teaching/Non Teaching and Public Health). For being specialist one need to have MD/MS degree with 3 years teaching /non teaching experience. But when the posts are advertised, they are few and applications are more and 3 year experience is converted into 7-8 year. So one can get into this service after 9-10 years of his/her MD/MS and by that time candidate is already more than 35 years old and left with less than 25 years of service. We request the MOH&FW to consider residency period of 3 years for service records without any conditions.

Welcome to One for Fun. Today my imaginary guest is Mr. Ram Jethmalani. (With due apologies to Karan Thapar and ----- Advocate.... the questions are his but the answers are imaginary).

Me: Mr. Jethmalani, for two years there has been a sign outside the gate of your residence in Delhi, which reads, 'I am not accepting any new court matters but welcome for anything else.' Despite that you have accepted Manu Sharma's case. Now tell me, is the sign wrong or have you simply changed your mind?
Jethamalani: You fool, don't you know that this was a ploy for the ----. The Notice outside my house was to show that I have no Income from Legal Practice …… and this Notice is also a ploy to increase my Legal Fee!!!! It's my right to conduct my business the way I want!!!

Me: Absolutely! No one denies it. But that it sounds like an excuse to me.
Jethamalani: I can and will do what I want!!! Who the hell are you to question me??? I have my obligations!!!

Me: Obligations????
Jethmalani: No no, not the obliged kind….. I'm obligated to stand up for the person who has paid my fee……. you fool what do you know about legal ethics??? Another reason is that Manu told me that the Media was unfair to him and was in fact conducting a trial against him in the Media!!!!

Me: You mean to say, the media and the media's treatment towards Manu Sharma has made you defend Manu Sharma. In other words, if the media hadn't characterised Manu Sharma the way they have, you wouldn't have defended him?
Jethamalani: I don't answer hypothetical questions…… and since the time I defended Haji Mastan the Press has been on my case…. so I can understand Manu's hurt!!!!

Me: You mean you have been entirely provoked by newspaper articles?
Jethmalani: Yes !!!!! And I always request the Press not to photograph me from the left side and they always ignore my request!!!! The Press is insensitive!!!

Me: Let me quote to you Kamini Jaiswal, an associate of yours for 30 years. Few people know you better. She says and I am quoting: "Jethmalani has publicly said he has retired and will appear only in matters when the larger national interest is at stake. How on earth is the national interest involved in this case?"
Jethmalani: This is a matter of National Interest. Manu Sharma is the son of Venod Sharma and like his Dad he will enter politics to serve the people…….. this case can cut short a budding politician from serving this great Country of ours and its my duty to see that this does not happen!!!! And as for Jaiswal …… she was and is jealous of my legal brains!!!

Me: Mr Jethmalani, you are exaggerating by use of pompous language a simple case. There is nothing of national interest involved in the Manu Sharma case.
Jethmalani: If there was no National Interest you would not be interviewing me…….. this case can prevent Manu, who has tremendous caliber, from serving this great Country!!!

Me: I will tell you why I am interviewing you. Because I have a suspicion that Ram Jethmalani picks cases to attract attention to himself and to create controversy. It is publicity he is seeking.
Jethmalani: I am a very shy person…….. in fact when you asked for this interview, I wanted to get what they call a 'Speaker' … just like people use writers in exams, I wanted to use a Speaker who would just mime what I say from behind the curtain!!! So shy am I that normally I do not like to meet people!!!

Me : Normally? Just look at the people that you have defended - Haji Mastan, Balbir Singh, Kehar Singh, Harshad Mehta, Ketan Parikh, Lalu Yadav and now Manu Sharma.
Jethmalani: I defended Haji Mastan because he made an offer I could not refuse…… you know that such offers can be injurious to one's health!! I'm partial to Bulls….. I simply love Bulls and so I could not refuse Harshad and Ketan's cases!!! I took Lalu's case because he came to my house with his entire family and circus of animals and camped outside and refused to budge till I accepted his brief!!! And Haji Mastan case is fifty years old… when I had hair on my head…… why are bringing up a fifty year old matter when I have a bald pate???

Me: For 50 years, you sought publicity. You are doing it again with Manu Sharma.
Jethmalani: In fifty years I have defended some good, some bad and some ugly…… so what????

Me: Do you know what your critics say? They say he is using Manu Sharma to build a career that is flagging. He is reviving a legal career that has ended by using and misusing Manu Sharma.
Jethmalani: You are a chariya ( stupid in Sindhi) if you believe them!!! Who says my career is flagging……. I've been offered to play the Lawyer in a movie on Manu…. Manu will himself star in this movie!!! At Page Three Parties I'm the Star!!!

Me: You are very welcome to be abusive of me. The point is that it's not a defense of the question that I am asking you.
Jethmalani: You nut case its you who is being abusive…… do you see my do ferocious dogs… I would have told them ' shoo' and they would have attacked you. And even if you sued me I would have won the case…….. after all if I can get others off the hook I can do the same for myself!!!

Me: Except for the fact that what I am asking is probably niggling you. I am saying that you choose cases and you choose clients to promote yourself.
Jethmalani: Arre stop taking pangaa with me……. I'm Ram Jethmalani and I'll huff and puff and blow you away!!!

Me: And in which case, why get angry? Why get upset? Why you lose temper?
Jethmalani: That's because I'm used to grilling people and not getting grilled!!

Me : All I am doing is being Devil's Advocate. You are behaving as if you have got the devil in front of you. Calm down! Calm down!
Jethmalani: Please don't say Devil's Advocate……I'm at the age when meeting the devil is a near possibility so please stop talking of Devil…. and what if the Devil is an Advocate…… marri gayo !!! I must say you are crossing all limits!!!

Me: Then let me cross one more. I want to talk to you about the manner in which you are defending Manu Sharma. Is it moral, fitting and proper that you should defend Manu Sharma by casting aspersions on the character of Jessica Lal, a woman who is dead and cannot defend herself.
Jethmalani: Arre chariya I'm an appellate Lawyer……. I'm just reading the records of this case!!! Of course I have my style of reading…. I am in my right to stress on certain words!!!!! See this article in the Pioneer!!

Me: Mr Jethmalani, I am well aware of what you are showing me. You are showing me an article from The Pioneer dated May 5, 1999. Just because a newspaper published an allegation…..
Jethmalani: Please read the headline……. tell them that this is an exhibit and also tell them that the story which is now being attributed to me is a part of the record of the case from 1999.

Me: Quite right. This headline, as you insist should be read out says, 'Passion not liquor behind murder.' By the looks of it Manu was passionate about his liquor!!
Jethmalani: Chariya I'll say shoo and my dogs will attack you……. who the hell are you to talk like this ….. this matter is now between me and the judges…….. stop being a kabab mein haddi!!!!

Me: Let me put it like this. Jessica Lall is dead. She cannot defend herself and you have no compunction in flinging baseless acquisitions to malign her character. Do you realise that you are damaging a woman, who is innocent?
Jethmalani: So then she'll not feel a thing!!!! Just like dead men don't walk dead women don't cry!!! And by the way this statement was made by a colleague of mine!!!!

Me: You are going back to a point that we have already done. Let me point out to you, as a criminal lawyer, you have every right to use every trick in the book. I put you a moral question. Are there no standards you won't fall below?
Jethmalani: Now you call sheer talent as tricks!!!!

Me: Mr Jethmalani, I am asking you a simple question. Are there no standards that you set yourself, which you observe? Is there no Laxman-rekha your own personal morality demands that you respect? Will you do anything? Will you fall to any level?
Ram Jethmalani: I will everything to save my client!!!
Karan Thapar: You have no conscience about the fact that you have maligned the reputation of a dead woman, who can't defend herself?
Ram Jethmalani: Please don't hit inside the body…… its like hitting under the belt!!! By the way as I look at it I've given her character!!!

Me: Karan Thapar: That is heartless and cruel. You claim that you are giving her character?
Jethmalani: Of course…. she refused someone making overtures to her!!! I am the greatest judge of character……. for the first thirty years of my career I used this gift to judge clients …. whether they'll pay my fee!!!

Me: You have answered as you think fit the questions about Jessica. The audience will judge whether they agree with you or not. Let's change that subject now. Let me now come to Bina Ramani and the Ramani family.In the case of the Ramanis, you have publicly suggested that Tamarind Court was a bordello and that they knowingly gave false evidence under pressure. You know it is not true, yet you said it.
Jethmalani: I never called it a Bordello!!! I called it a Rendezvous.

Me: A rendezvous! What a delightful euphemism? Let me point out something else. You have frequently been to Tamarind as a customer.
Jethmalani: I been to the place once!!

Me: Seven times 'no'…. that means at least seven times!!!

Me: Can I ask you a rude question…. the worst, rudest possible question, and, I apologise, but it is the sad truth, I suspect!!!
Jethmalani: Napoleon and Bolshoi ( calling his boxers to come near him)….. Ramu, Shamu , Mary and Amma ( calling out to his servants)…… now ask me the question…… if I find it rude my dogs will attack you and my staff will throw you out!!!

Me: You are indulging in an innuendo, libel and irrelevant concern. You are besmirching an innocent woman's character.
Jethmalani: Khoda pahaad aur nikla chooaa….. for no reason you made me put my dogs on alert and call my servants!!! Arre Bhai everything is fair in Court as long as you win the case!!!

Me: I am asking a different question. They used to say of Ram Jethmalani that he was a champion of justice.
Jethmalani: I am a Champion ……and all depends on which side of the fence you stand!!!!

Me: Do you regret the collapse in your standard?
Jethamalani: I live well… I eat and drink the best…. I wear the best clothes…….you know the kurta payjamas I wear to be are Satin……… I travel in the best cars……… where is there a collapse in my standard!!!

Me: Yes apart form him and you all will be crying….Jessica Lall's reputation is in your hands. She is a helpless girl who is dead. You are destroying it and you know you are doing it willfully. Is that not immoral?
Jethmalani: I like bulls but I don't like bullshit….. and what you are saying is just bullshit!!!

Me: Yes your Epitaph will read ' Here lies a Lawyer who was in contempt of Law and Humanity is equal measure '!!! Thank you for this interview…any last words!!!
