FORUM

Is it not double standard ?

It is really strange that there is a lot of hue and cry when seniority etc. are ignored and junior promoted in the categories of IAS, IFS etc. etc. whereas a number of lower officers suffer the same way in subordinate services. Is it not a Double standarad of the Government Can any body take responsibility for doing away this anomaly and put the rules straight for all the civil services.

Pt Ram Kanwar

Credit for deal goes to M K Narayanan

I had the privelege of working under M K Narayanan in the IB when he was Director. I have yet to come across an officer with such clarity of vision, and foresight. It is no surprize that he has pulled off a very favorable deal for India, which, as you have rightly mentioned, the Chinese took 13 years to get. All credit to Narayanan.

Why K was ignored and D was selected ?

Discussion about denial of CP Delhi's post to Kiran Bedi has gone far too astray. PK Lahiri's views that 'people' shouldn't expect the 'Sarkar' to explain each and every appointment or selection to high posts is obviously out of synch with the modern day demands of transparency. Equally untenable is Raj's assertion that Kiran Bedi should have been selected because she too is a Punjabi like the PM. In such a highly opinionated scenario, rational discourse becomes impossible. Let's therefore reflect coolly over the whole thing.
It is a fact that Kiran Bedi had the right to expect the job as she is presently the senior most IPS from the UT cadre. It is also a fact that the gentleman given the assignment is two batches junior to Kiran.
One cannot dispute the basic issue that selection of one amongst the many in ZOC cannot be solely on grounds of seniority. Seniority shall be the clinching factor 'other things being equal'. Obviously other things weren't equal between K and D in the eyes of the Government. THEREFORE government has to explain to the people at least two things; first, what are those 'other things' and second, how are they not equal between the senior most aspirant and the chosen one.
Transparency to this extent will be in the interest of the government and Dadwal also as in the absence of authentic information rumours injurious to Dadwal's reputation are gaining ground and the names of PM and other dignitaries are also being dragged in. Shouldn't the government do itself and Dadwal a huge favour by coming out with the real reasons why K was ignored and D was selected? I think it should.

Not good for healthy administration

I tend to agree with the views expressed in this column by B G Walia and P K Lahiri that the methods (going to media) adopted by Ms. Kiran Bedi to raise her grievance against the Prime Minister for selecting her as CP, Delhi, cannot be justified in any way and rather they question her maturity in service matters. I hope he herself would not tolerate such action by any of her own subordinates. Some of my friends are trying to give gender colour to this case comparing it with the election of a woman President. This is not good for healthy administration.

There is a need to raise retirement age

I don't agree with the views of Rakesh & Meeran. How can one brand the whole lot of employees as inefficient. There is every need to raise the retirement age to 62 yrs as ultimately the experience counts.

M Raina

Vijay Singh is right person for right place

It is a rare case where square pegs have not been put in round holes! The Government deserves to be congratulated in adhering to seniority and yet getting the right person at proper place! Am sure Vijay will do full justice to job.

Rules should be same for everybody

Regarding Parmeshwar Singh's sharp reaction, I think he should enlighten us further on what happened to the proposal by the then non-IRS JS about assigning the post to IRS. I am sure and Parmeshwar Singh/Prashant would agree that if it was turned down, it would not be the wish of IRS cadre. IRS very much wants to manage their own affairs, as is the case with IAS, Railways, etc.
Parmeshwar Singh has chosen not to comment on my other important observations, i.e. Is IAS willing to assign their cadre related matters/service matters/ postings/promotions etc. to others? The rules should be same for everybody, Parmeshwar. Please enlighten us with your views on this.

New "Air India"to take off from tomorrow

All is set for merged Airline of Air India & Indian to take off from July 1, 2007.Indian Aviation Minister Praful Patel has announced name, and mascot & logo of merged Airline According to Praful Patel the new entity will be known as "Air India". While the new Company will have its registered office in New Delhi, its Corporate Office will be in Mumbai and its office for domestic operations as well as the strategic business units will be mostly based in Delhi. The mascot of the merged airline will be the Maharajah. The new livery and logo of the merged airline were also unveiled by the Minister .As "Air India" is a globally and nationally recognized brand name, as well as the designated airline in international bilaterals - the 'AI' code being available only to the existing name, it has been decided that the merged entity would continue with the same name. The design components of the new logo and livery have been drawn after merging some of the current features of both Air India and Indian. The logo of the new airline is a "Flying Swan" with the "Konark Charka" placed inside it.The "Flying Swan" has been morphed from Air India's characteristic logo, 'The Centaur' whereas the 'Konark Chakra' is reminiscent of Indian's logo. The new logo will feature prominently on the tail of the aircraft. Individually the Konark Chakra will also feature on all the engines of the aircraft. The choice of colours namely red for 'Flying Swan' and orange for 'Konark Chakra' are meant to signify vigour and advancement. Further the colours also have a strong association with two carriers thereby retaining the earlier imagery of traditional hospitality and service. While the aircraft will be ivory in colour, the base will retain the red streak of Air India. Running parallel to each other will be the orange and red speed lines from front door to the rear door, subtly signifying the individual identities merged into one. The brand name 'Air India' will run across the tail of the aircraft.
