This is becoming a tragic and regular reality. The blame lies squarely on the military leadership - particularly at the highest level. Note that all these suicides have a pattern - they are all North of Pathankot - and let us not blame miltancy for this. It is due to unnecessary pressure being placed on troops, and without purpose. Our soldiers are very gritty - given proper leadership, purposeful work and selfless service by their officers they will go with you to the end. But when seniors only set tasks for self glorification, and do not have the moral courage to stand up to seniors for them, it is recipe for disaster. Examine the leadership of Northern command nad you will know why all this is happening!! We too commanded women officers during Op PARAKRAM in 50+ degrees temperature, and living conditions which demanded extreme courage. not once did they fail us. As a Division Commander I was proud of their contribution. Agreed they may lack physical strenght of men, but they are mentally solid, and provided they are given respect and challenging work they will perform. In many units elsewhere, women officers were tasked with mundane duties, not commensurate with their intellect - naturally frustration sets in. It is for the senior officers to be ruthless with any subordinate employing women officers as some sort of decoration piece - they volunteered for service as soldiers, are motivated and committed, and must be treated as such. Any senior officer who abuses this trust will naturally have a problem on his hands. I had stated this in a TV interview also - we are trying to treat the disease rather than its root cause. An example will illustrate - many years back, when there were no women officers (except doctors), on Army Day Parade the medals for honorees were carried on a tray by JCOs/NCOs - today you only see women officers poerforming this low grade job. Are they chattels or what! If we want to stop suicides, deep introspection is required, and a profound change in attitude - else there will be more to come. You can already see the writing on the wall in increased "fragging" incidents, even while the senior Army hierarchy is caliming a drop in infiltration!!! So, it is evident the stress is NOT due to militancy, but due to infructuous commitments. KS Sindhu Why deterioration in services ? Why can't these retired officers fade away gracefully instead of hanging around political masters to get some post-retirement jobs.One can see even those retired in the 50s being resurrected.Are these appointments for the 'services' rendered during their official tenure.Some jobs like the Mizo interlocuter (former Home Secretary) is unending without any tangible results.Are there no fit officers in service to handle this job.This was never seen among ICS. Similarly IPS officers are posted as Port Trust Chairmen and Forest Service Officers posted as Passport Officers.There should be a limit to political patronage,otherwise the whole service will stink. Apart from reservation, service officers running after political patronage is one the reasons for the deterioration of the standards. Narendra K Where is the file of Commissioners of IT ? It is amazing that such a thing has been allowed to continue. If the file related to the promotion of IAS officers' the Cabinet Secretariat would have been alive and there would have been hundreds of persuasive reasons for expediting the file on a fast track. The point is that which officer in the Cabinet Secreatariat is sitting over the file without any valid reasons. The CVC has stated that sitting over a file for an abnormally long time has a vigilance angle.
