IMAGINARY INTERVIEW WITH -AMAR AKBAR AND ANTONY

The other day rather than traveling by my regular 6.14 fast local (train), I decided to take the 7.15 fast local from Churchgate to Andheri. I did this so that I could meet my friends Amar, Akbar and Antony who are regulars on this local. I got into their regular compartment and was greeted very warmly by all three.

Amar : Kya haal hai Bharat Bhai….. tabiyat paani sabh okay hai na?
Me: Ek dum fit.
Akbar: Arre Bhai tumm logh fit hai parr our Country's PM's health may suffer because he's spending sleepless nights…… he told UK's PM Brown that he's spending sleepless nights!
Antony: Arre man his conscience must be pricking him….. his conscience must be really suffering after he issued a clean chit to Pratibha……. and now his conscience must be suffering even more after he said that Pratibha is outstanding!!!!
Akbar: Yaar but he's not elaborated as to what she's outstanding in….. like they say badnaam ka bhi naam hothaa hai...... the allegations have really sullied her name!!!
Amar: Yesterday Sonia had said that Pratibha's candidature was a milestone!!!
Me: I think that this Diwedi fellow, whose a member of Sonia's kitchen cabinet, has been entrusted with the job of finding new glowing adjectives for Pratibha!!! Everyday as a new skeleton comes out of her cupboard Diwedi comes up with a new glowing adjective for Pratibha and Sonia or Manmohan or and Laloo use it for her!!!

The Train stopped at Grant Road and the usual lot of Diamond Brokers rushed in. Most of them had Paan Masala packets in their hands and teeth that showed Paan Masala abuse.

Akbar: Yaar but she's a very good wife, mother and sister….. a good relative!!!
Amar: Yeah……. all have benefited by her being in power….. seems she believes in Charity begins at home!!!!!
Antony: But that's no qualification for India's top job!!
Akbar: Imagine a College run by her diverted capitation fee to other Trusts run by her to save taxes!!!
Amar: And imagine donations for Kargil were collected from employees of a Bank run by her and the Bank did not forwards the funds to the beneficiaries the funds were collected for!!!
Antony: The Sugar Mill she started went belly up and RBI cancelled the license of her Bank!!
Amar: How come she's rubbished the allegations saying all this is just politically motivated propaganda!!!
Antony: Had she been innocent she would have come out with rebuttals to clear her name!!!!
Me: 'Politically motivated' is an excuse that Politicos use whenever they are faced with allegations and Pratibha is no different!!! Shahabuddin and Papu Yadav use this excuse for every allegation against them!!!
Amar: A common man is guilty till he proves himself innocent whereas a Politician is innocent till proven guilty!!!

The Train stopped at Dadar and the perfume of the flowers being sold outside the station wafted into the train!!!

Antony: Arre man hadn't the UNPA said that they'd support Shekhawat???
Amar: UNPA Leaders may stand on one dais but all of them have their own agendas!!! And none of them can be trusted!!! See what they did to Kalam …. all that Kalam told them was that he'd consider standing if the numbers were in his favor. And these loonies came out and showed as if Kalam had conceded to stand for the election!!!
Akbar: And see the gall of Commies …. they say if surety of numbers is there then what kind of election is this????
Me: Voting on Party lines makes this election an undemocratic one!!! Do the MPs and MLAs go to their constituencies to find out who is their electorate's choice for President??? This indirect election does not reflect the will of the people!!! In this election its Sonia's will and Sonia's will is not India's will!!!
Antony: They make us feel as if we do not matter!!!
Amar: Balasahib has made it into a Marathi Manus issue!!!
Akbar: Ask him if Gawli was in Pratibha's place would he support Gawli's candidature... Gawli is also a Marathi Manus!!!

The Train reached Bandra and Antony bade us adieu and alighted.

Amar: But why do these people want only a Politician as India's next President!!!
Akbar (winking) : They say a Politician understands the system better!!!
Amar: But Kalam did a commendable job as President. The Political establishment could not take the President's Office for granted!!
Me: A President's job has many facets. He's a Diplomat, Judge, Army Commander, Father figure all rolled into one!!!
Amar: I feel Politicians bring politics to an Office that is supposed to be devoid of Politics!!! Fathers, Judges and Army Commanders don't play politics!!!
Akbar: Kalam should have been given another term…… he deserved it!!!

The train reached Andheri and we all alighted.

Akbar: Congress will not take any notice of the allegations against Pratibha…… they've got the numbers and so Pratibha becoming the next President is a certainty!!!
Amar: I feel only non politicians should stand for the Office of President….. you make any Politician stand for this Office and the Opposition will come out with a taint sheet. Congress in retaliation to Pratibha's taint sheet has come out with a taint sheet on Shekhawat!!!
Me: Like they say ' in the haamam all are nangaa'……. only individuals who have never been in the 'hamaam' of politics should be allowed to stand for the Office of President!!! Kalam or someone like him!!!

Saturn moves mid July to bring changes all around
In these media dominated times, even ordinary solar happenings are being hyped into something extraordinary. The Planets, like all living organs, keep on moving. Like humans, they come to interact and be together for a while or for long, thus influencing lives of all of us. It is a routine and pre-ordained happening. But the media's tendency of making mountains out of mole rattles quite a many. Life is not like that.
The important Astral movement this month is that of Saturn, moving from Cancer to Leo, in mid July. This will surely cause a flutter in all natal charts - both of individuals and nations. Cancerians, going through stress should feel relieved now. The Aries people will be worried for their sons and daughters. The Sagittarians and Pisceans should begin making efforts for new assignments if unhappy presently. Their efforts have more chances now to succeed. Scorpions also can hope to transform their working environs.Saturn will stay long enough in Leo for all this to take shape.
The continuing Mars-Saturn conjunction, however, spells increased tension and disasters - both natural and man-made. Besides natural excesses like limitless rains and earthquakes and an increase in terror activities is also likely.

6.22 rampant in senior Army promotions
I was not surprised by NN Ojha's revelations. Being a senior officer in the know of things, one is glad to know he had the moral courage to point out a systemic fault as he observed it.

Take case of the Army - it has 72 authorised posts of Lieutenant General (equivalent to Additional Secretary). In 2000/2001 a particular community had 14 Lt Gens (still very high compared to its national population ratio of 1%) - today we are informed the same community has 32 Lt Gens - wow that is almost a 100% jump, and more than 50% representation against the national statistical ratio of 1%. Surely this blatant favouritism cannot have escaped notice of the Ministry or the Cabinet Secretary - or are they helpless!!
No two guesses as to who or why this sudden brilliance has been "acquired". Certainly not because of any "special tonic" or "acumen", but because "show me the face and I'll show you the rule" is a thriving practice. And that too in front of the open (or 'deliberately' shut) eyes of the parent Ministry.
A particular example of the "Dhrtitrashtra" syndrome takes the cake - that of the promotion of the general commanding in Amritsar - it made a mockery of whole system of selection - juniors in the Army were left gasping at the audacity in circumventing rules!! The parent Ministry was an active participant in appeasing, and going along with, the Army hierarchy - 'two sides of the same coin', or 'quid pro quo' for the Ministry to take a return favour for its own favourites at an opportune time.
If every senior starts acting only for his community, where are we going to end up? Even professionals with no mentors will be done down - the present exodus of officers (many of them very bright) is largely due to this.
High time all Ministries realise that the 'cat is out of the bag', and that even though CCS rules enforce a ban on public airing of views - people are aware of what is happening. The system is being damaged irreparably at great cost to the nation. Can we sit silently and let this happen!! 6.22s - whether in the civil or in the defense forces - is a cancer that needs urgent surgical removal.
If we are indeed helpless in the face of present circumstances, then let's accept our fate and not start the blame game later when things go horribly wrong, as we do for cricket, tsunamis, floods, drainage or what have you!!

Ministry will see good days again
The Union Government will observe that during the last very few years there have been a number of Secretaries to this Ministry. The reason is not clear. Is it a un-important Ministry but it has four Ministers. It is a very small ministry and no full fledge Secretary likes to stay. In the earlier past this ministry was headed by a Secretary of the rank of Joint Secretary, later on by a Secretary of the rank of Additional Secretary. A few years back it raised to be headed by a full-fledged secretary. Frequent changes of the Secretaries, perhaps, have put the ministry in a non developing ministry and there had been a number of subject matters allotted to it by the Cabinet, but a number of them are not being touched at all. For one reason or the other the ministry is loosing its worth and importance. Only a Secretary for a long tenure can raise it importance wise as well. We hope sometime this ministry will see good days again.
