Spurt in crime raises many a brows What is Gen Musharraf upto? Pakistan's military ruler General Pervez Musharraf means business. This was quite explicit from his recent action regarding the Islamabad located Lal Masajid row. Gen Musharraf by targetting militants holed up in the said Masjid has created a stir of sorts. It is so because head of Lal Masjid located "Jamia Hafsa Madarsa" Abdul Rashid Gahazi was Musharraf's teacher in his childhood. Hence he seems to have a message to hardliners that he would spare no one when it comes to dealing with militants. S V Ratnam Status of Direct Recruit CSS officers Direct Recruit CSS officers used to get selected from Civil Services
Examination till year 2000.There are Management Graduates, Chartered
Accountants, Doctors, Engineers and other well qualified people in the
service. It is most unfortunate they are not getting their due .There
exits is so much of adhocism in DOPT as far as CSS is concerned. CSS
forms the back bone of any ministry. They have rightful claim over various
posts in the Secretariat. Other services have their own cadre in addition
to Central Staffing Scheme for placements. It is high time that someone
in Government of India should seriously examine the problems faced by
the CSS officers and come out with solutions so the frustration, helplessness
which exist as of now is removed. After all these officers have also
come through Civil Services examination and so much of step motherly
treatment is not good for the morale of the officers. Pl start new column I feel that you should have a coloumn called "Remembrances" which in brief pays tribute to the deceased Officers by highlighting their work and trends which they may have set in during their service. One example was the obituary of late G C Dutt IPS whose death was mentioned in your Whispers. An Old IITian ,P Kumar TAIL-PIECE SUCCESS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN ISOLATION One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learnt something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbours'. "How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbours when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?" the reporter asked. "Why sir, "said the farmer, "didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbours grow inferior, sub-standard and poor quality corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbours grow good corn." The farmer gave a superb insight into the connectedness of life. His
corn cannot improve unless his neighbour's corn also improves. So it
is in the other dimensions! Contributed by Col Satish Dewan Aaj Ki Aawaz Manmohan spends sleepless nights because he sleeps during the day!!!
