Imaginary Interview with a candid Prakash Karat.

Question: A majority in Parliament is against the Nuclear Deal in its present form. But Congress has gone to IAEA. Is it being unreasonable? Karat: But fact is that BJP won't be seen with us and we cannot be seen with BJP! Congress is being unreasonable by trying to chum up with USA . Congress is dropping its Socialistic credentials and going Capitalist. Congress is being unreasonable because it wants Commies to be the legs of the bed it plans to sleep on with USA !

Question: Do you want Congress to kill this Deal?
Karat: Shoot it, blast it, blow it up, throttle it, drown it…… just get rid of it in whatever way it seems fit.

Question: And if they do proceed are you prepared for elections?
Karat: Are you joking ….. otherwise don't you think we would have pulled the plug already. Why do you think we just keep barking??? Nandigram has removed the few teeth we had and now we can't bite!!! So now our strategy is we'll just keep shouting and threatening.

Question: The Left has always opposed the Nuclear Deal. What has surprised observers is the show of unity across Party lines. Was there coordination between Left and Opposition Parties?
Karat: With BJP there was no talk whatsoever…… Advani tried to call me over for lunch but I excused myself saying that I was suffering from heartburn! Yes there is unity with UNPA….. Amar is a fantastic host and we had many meetings at his home on the Nuclear Deal ……and we discussed the Nuclear Deal munching on mind blowing food!!! Problem is like us UNPA is not ready for elections and hence there's more talk of the outcome if UPA is destabilized than the Deal itself!!! Survival always comes first!

Question: Is the Centre's foreign policy tilt towards US an irresolvable matter between Congress and the Left? Karat: Of course if I were to maaro laath in your stomach what would you say? With India going the US way what will happen to Indian Commies??? Our Mai Baaps sitting in Russia and China will just turn off the tap!!! We'll be on the roads!!! Congress should think about us too!!! Oh I got carried away…… of course its irresolvable ….. we cannot allow India to fall into the trap of Capitalism …. we are patriots and we cannot allow this to happen to India !!!

Question: You also disagree with the Government's position on Iran ?
Karat: Haven't you heard of the adage 'an enemy's enemy is your friend'??? And I personally love Persian and Brinda too is in love with Iran !!! I'm planning to go to Iran for a vacation with my bro in law Pronoy…coming back to the question…… frankly to spite USA we are willing to do anything!!!!

Question: Given the ideologically divergent positions, why do you support the UPA Government for three and half years? Karat: Power ka maamla hai…… this is sublime power…… power without any accountability and responsibility!! To tell you the truth this the closest we will ever get to coming to power at the Centre!!!! During the NDA regime we were like pariahs and now we've got power. Had we not supported UPA our banwaas would have been extended!!! And your terminology is wrong…. we don't have divergent views but cross eyed views!!

Question: Is the Indo - US Nuclear Deal the biggest flashpoint?
Karat: There have been so many flashpoints of equal intensity….. first flashpoint was on the seating arrangement in Coordination Committee meetings…. next flashpoint was when only chai and biscuits were served in these meeting and we insisted that these meetings be fully catered affairs…… recently the flashpoints has been Congress chumming up to Mamta!!!! Nuclear Deal is one of the flashpoints!!!

Question: Is there hope for a non Congress non BJP third front alternative? Will the Left support UNPA in and after the General elections? Karat: Seems Amar got you to ask me this question??? We want power and that's the bottom line!!! After tasting power at the Centre now to be without power will be unbearable!!! As we know we can never come to power on our own we would first prefer the type of power we enjoy today…. but if push comes to shove we can be a part of the Sarkaar!

Question: Many see Nandigram as Party's hour of shame. Has CPI(M) been hurt by the Nandigram violence? Karat: It's the Capitalist backed Media that has made our Party look bad!!! But we are confident the WB CID will bring out the truth!!! This was just spontaneous combustion between villagers and nothing more! We do not see eye to eye with Mamtha on anything and she's eyeing WB and we will not shirk from an eye to eye confrontation with her!!! And if Congress thinks it will be able to unseat us with Mamtha's help then we'll give both a black eye in the elections!!! And we'll get back at the Capitalist backed Media for putting us in the eye of this storm!!

Question: How did you get attracted to Marxism?
Karat: The girls in those days just loved Marxists!! If you were a Marxist you were in great demand!!! Ask Mani Shankar Aiyer and he'll confirm what I'm saying!!! How the hell do you think an ordinary looking guy like me could befriend and marry Brinda, who was the Queen on the campus???? Have you seen photographs of me and Brinda in our youth…. remind me to show you these photographs and you'll just say QED!!!

Question: Even after 60 years of Independence 77% of Indians cannot spend more than Rs. 20/day. Why?
Karat: If India had gone the Communism way today 99% Indians would have been spending Rs. 20/day way back in the 80's and by today Indians would be spending Rs. 21.50/day….. this we call the Public's maximum wage!! And before you question me on the balance 1%...... well the Politburo and their near and dear will be making a little more because of the tremendous responsibility, efforts and sacrifices they make to ensure that the Public makes the maximum wage!!!

Question: What is the CPI(M)'s agenda for the party congress to be held in Coimbatore in March 2008???
Karat: Now we work on a minute to minute to outlook….. what will happen next minute is not known!!! But I feel the main topic of discussion in the congress will be how to stay in power….. and indirect power suits us most as we cannot come to power on our own and we would not like to part of a coalition? We've seen powerless days and have firmly come to believe…. be the latthi and let the Sarkaar be the bhains or buffalo!

In-fighting affects handicrafts industry ?
Groupism and in-fighting has badly affected the handicrafts industry with the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) Dr. Sanjay Aggarwal, IAS, watching the situation helplessly. One group is led by Navratan Samdaria and the other group is headed by Ravi K. Passi. An NGO promoted by one woman is only adding fuel to the fire. This Rs. 20,000 crore industry is already suffering because of depreciation of dollar. Both the groups are openly fighting for the control of Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) which has huge funds for the promotion of Indian handicrafts abroad.

Great Mr Adhia

Great! Mr. Adhia is probably one of those rare breed of IAS officers who has acquired a reputation of being a very successful administrator as also having a flair for writing on management subjects. My congratulations to him.

TAIL-PIECE

Hope you'll like this...

Once PVNR (PV Narasimha Rao), L.K.Advani and Laloo Prasad Yadav were
travelling in an auto-rickshaw. They met with an accident and all three of
them died.

Yama Raja was waiting for this moment at the doorstep of death.

He asks PVNR and Advani to go to HEAVEN.

But, for Laloo, Yama had already decided that he should be sent to HELL.
Laloo is not at all happy with this decision.

He asks Yama as to why this discrimination is being made. All the three of
them had served the public. Similarly, all took bribes, all misused public
positions, etc.

Then why the differential treatment?

He felt that there should be a formal test or an objective evaluation before
a decision is made; and should not be just based on opinion or pre-conceived
notions.

Yama agrees to this and asks all the three of them to appear for an English
test.

PVNR is asked to spell ' INDIA ' and he does it correctly.

Advani is asked to spell ' ENGLAND ' and he too passes.

It is Laloo's turn and he is asked to spell ' CZECHOSLOVAKIA '.

Laloo protests that he doesn't know English.

He says this is not fair and that he was given a tough question and thus
forced to fail with false intent.

Yama then agrees to conduct a written test in Hindi (to give another chance
assuming that Laloo should at least feel that Hindi would provide an equal
platform for all three).

PVNR is asked to write 'KUTTA BOLA BHOW BHOW'. He writes it easily and
passes.

Advani is asked to write 'BILLY BOLI MYAUN MYAUN'. He too passes.

Laloo is asked to write 'BANDAR BOLA GURRRRRR.... .'
Tough one. He fails again.

Laloo is extremely unhappy.

Having been a student of history (which the other two weren't),he now
requested for all the 3 to be subjected to a test in history

Yama says OK but this would be the last chance and that he would not take
any more tests.

PVNR is asked: 'When did India get Independence ?'. He replied '1947' and
passed.

Advani is asked 'How many people died during the independence struggle?'.

He gets nervous. Yama asked him to choose from 3 options: 100,000 or 200,000
or 300,000.
Advani catches it and says 200,000 and passes.

It's Laloo's turn now.

Yama asks him to give the Name and Address of each of the 200,000 who died
in the struggle.
Laloo accepts defeat and agrees to go to HELL.

Moral of the story: IF YOUR MANAGEMENT HAS DECIDED TO SCREW YOU, THERE IS NO
ESCAPE
