For Anuj Gandhi, President of SET Discovery Pvt. Ltd, participative management and being receptive to ideas is of an immense importance. An energetic, polite, strategic thinker and perfectionist to the core, Gandhi feels "the big story in 2007 will be the Direct to Home (DTH) and digital cable. We should see deals being struck on all addressable platforms."

In an exclusive interview with whispersinthecorridors.com, Anuj Gandhi before leaving for Singapore said "the Indian Infotainment industry is poised at a very critical phase in its life cycle and is slated to grow in excess of 15-20 per cent in the next decade."

While, sharing secret of his success President of the SET Discovery Pvt. Ltd said "the company has crossed several milestones since its inception."

1/What inspired you to start this venture ?

- Market realities and dynamics of the C & S Distribution business in 2002
- Comparative activities
- Changing face of the Media Industry
- All of the above inspired our thinking and our drive to start SET Discovery Pvt. Ltd. and build it into a Distribution Powerhouse. The company has crossed several milestones since its inception.

2/What difficulties have you faced in developing the business?

Like in any new business, there were concerns about whether we will be able to achieve the goals we had set ourselves, but we had immense confidence in our people and the product we were representing. We have set ourselves high targets and I am happy that we were able to achieve our numbers.

3/What is the secret of your success ?

I can attribute my success largely to the fact that I am a strategic thinker and like to combine my entrepreneurial ability with creativity. I advocate an energized, participative management style and flexibility to understand the diverse and changing needs of the industry.

4/How do you see the year 2007 for the Media Industry?
The big story in 2007 would be DTH and digital cable. We should see deals being struck on all addressable platforms. Digital cable, voluntary CAS(Conditional access system), Headend-In-The-Sky (HITS) should all become a reality and make economic sense to distribution companies like us. As an industry, we should support unregulated CAS. Things will take time to settle down till digital gets in mass volumes.

5/Where would the Indian Infotainment industry be by the year 2020 and your role by then?

The Indian Infotainment industry is poised at a very critical phase in its life cycle and is slated to grow in excess of 15-20% in the next decade.
I believe all aspects of the Infotainment industry would continue to grow. It would not only mean big revenues and market valuations but also great opportunities for more and more people to contribute to this industry.

I have now been in the Media industry for close to 12 years. After having seen the industry grow from where it was, virtually non-existent in 1994, to where it is today, I would like to still be a part of it as it takes its next leap forward.

NAME THE NAMELESS

Who is the Super Boss & Super Cop-name the nameless.

For a change, this is not a whisper. In fact, it's a yell from the housetop. A yell for the year 2007.If our patrons endorse it, this yell from the WHISPERS should reverberate in corridors of all state capitals, besides of course the heart of India-that Delhi has always been and shall so remain all times to come.

These are happening times. You don't do things. They happen. Or you make them happen. Everywhere on the eve of or at the advent of New Year, people were or are busy looking for their Man of the year. Politicians, businessmen, moviemen, sportsmen and social activists are hogging limelight. The civil servants continue to remain the self-effacing names behind the supposedly big names. They run the Rails and the rustic humour of someone Read gets Qudos and Credits. Thats the funny way democracy goes. Interesting, isn't it?

We thought on the New Year Day we should attempt doing the hitherto unattempted and un-done. You and us will make it happen. We are going launch you this year on a thrilling voyage of a discovery. We are declaring that in the Year 2007 all of you would help us discover the Bureaucrat of the Year and also the Super cop of the Year in each of our major states. Besides, New Delhi's 'Supers' which will happen in December 2007.Every month we will be looking for a Super Boss and Super Cop of the Year in a particular state.

We request all those who are interested in our WHISPERS and visit us frequently to send us the names of such individual officers whom they consider as a Super Bureaucrat and a Super Cop in their state. We are putting forth no yardsticks. You judge entirely on your own. The nominations will rest entirely and exclusively on your wisdom. Just E-Mail the name of Super Boss and Super Cop of your state. This flow of nominations will end on the last day of the month.
We will announce the winner on the 7th day of next month. Seven, the numerologists say, is the number of mystery. Therefore, a good day to unfold it.

And Uttar Pradesh is the first state, we are beginning with. Arguably the most appropriate state to discover the undiscoverable or to name the perennially nameless. There is no territorial bar. You can nominate even for an incumbent outside your state. You can be brief or elaborate. As you choose. You don't even have to disclose your identity. We will trust you.
So, here we begin. Just E Mail us on <sureshmehrotra@yahoo.com>A very Happy New Year.

Will Bihar Chief Minister try ?

It is said of Dr. B C Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, that he had family details of all WB Officers who were on central deputation and he was also aware of pressing problems in their families. Whenever he went to New Delhi he used to meet maximum of them and used to enquire about the officer and his/her family including problem, if any , with the officer. Naturally WB officers on central deputation always did their best to push / expedite pending matters of West Bengal government. It was but natural. Response is always reciprocal. I wish the Chief Minister of Bihar to please give it a try . He will not lose anything except inordinate delay at GoI level.

One needs to ask why ?

This refers to the item appearing the other day stating that the Finance Ministry has decided not to post an IRS officer on the post of JS looking after the establishment of the IRS. One needs to ask why?
Is it because an insider cannot be trusted? Even if such insider is an IRS officer empanelled as JS and appointed in the Government under the central staffing scheme? But the real power is still with IRS members of the Board only.
Or is it because a non-IRS is there as the eyes and ears of the Ministry in which he is appointed and part of whose powers have been given to the Board. If it is the latter, then such a non-IRS can hardly ever be effective if his position is one rendered subordinate to the Board.. Are we still living in the world of make-believe? Who are fooling except ourselves?

Aaj Ki Aawaz

Welcome to Crankily Speaking ( on the lines of Frankly Speaking on Times Now TV, which is anchored by Arnab Gowswami). My guest today is Punjab's Chief Minister Amrinder Singh.

Me: Welcome to Crankily Speaking. My first question …….. people in Punjab say that they gave you a mandate for five years and out of these five years you spent two years in your vengeance against the Badals, two and three quarter years in just enjoying yourself and balance few months in trying to woo back your squandered electorate!!!
Amrinder: All lies…. I started working on the Vikas of Punjab from the very start!!! My aim was to get back the Rs. 3500 crores Badals had looted…… this money would have been utilized for Punjab's Vikas!!!
Me: But you've not been able to provide any proof on Badal's so called ill gotten wealth!!
Amrinder: You see Badals went to SC and things were stalled. But we know where their wealth is and when Congress comes back to power we will go hammer and tongs after them!!!
Me: If you know where all their wealth is what is stopping you from sharing this info with the Public……maybe Court will take Suo Moto notice??? Why don't you provide some info here itself….. give us a taste of what you have!!!
Amrinder: No No I can't do this…..I've taken the oath of secrecy!!!
Me: Nice one……… basically its felt that you just worked out a notional figure. Its said that you first found out what was the Punjab CM's notional dihaadi ( daily wage) was and then you multiplied it by the days Badal was in power and came to a notional figure!!! What about the charges of corruption Akalis have leveled against you and your family!!!
Amrinder: I am willing to face any inquiry….. Nehra Commission has cleared my son……. and Vigilance has cleared the City Center Project!!!
Me: You say Badal has made Rs. 3500 crores and Badals say that in just the City Center fraud you've siphoned off Rs. 2000 crores!!!
Amrinder: Let me come back to power I'll bring out everything!!
Me: Well you had five years to substantiate your wild allegations but you've not been able to substantiate anything…….coming to the next question….. both Dullo and Bhattal have commented that decision on the next CM will only be taken after winning the election!!!
Amrinder: But that does not mean I'm not a candidate!!!
Me: Its rumored that Bhattal is already shopping for CM attire and accessories!!!
Amrinder: When this tit bit came in the public domain I did question her and she said that she was just going in for a business look… she said it's the in thing today!!!
Me: Maybe this time she means business and aims at being 'in' the CM's Office……. my next question is that why were you so inaccessible to Punjabis???
Amrinder: Time constraint….. I had so much to do in so little time… too much on my plate!!!
Me: Its rumored that you came down from your bedroom only at noon time and you spent only a couple of hours in Office…….. because of your lifestyle you simply could not take out time for Punjabis!! And by your ballooning girth one can safely say that there was nothing but food on your plate!!!
Amrinder: See at my age I cannot change my waking and sleeping hours!!!
Me: But you had all the time to live a high life !!
Amrinder: At my age how can I be expected to change my habits???
Me: Punjabis are habituated to having CMs who have time for them……..take Badal for example he's meeting Punjabis right from 6 am to midnight…… he's accessible to the common man……… how can you expect Punjabis to change their habits???
Amrinder: Well I cannot change!!!
Me: It's rumored that Punjabis are going in for a change to take care of your inaccessibility….. its also rumored that just before the election results are announced you will go abroad for some treatment???
Amrinder: I don't think its illegal to go abroad …. whether its before the election results are announced or after the election results are announced!!!
Me: No…… but there is a perception that you are running away!!!
Amrinder: Please I'd rather not discuss this….. next question!!
Me: They say when Badal's name is taken you break into a sweat!
Amrinder: I'll teach that Baba and his baloongda a lesson!!
Me: Why do use strong language for your opponents???
Amrinder: I just respond with tit for tat……. like for example Badal calls me Aishi!!!
Me: But then its true because this is the perception of you in Punjab!!!
Amrinder: Then Badal is in reality a Baba as he's an elder…… and Sukhbir is always clawing me so he's a baloongda!!!
Me: But now that you say Badal is an elder… should you address Badal as 'tu'???
Amrinder: Control nahi hondaa…….. ho janda hai!!!
Me: What made you undertake the Vikas Yatra??
Amrinder: Well, my Sarkaar has done a lot of Vikas and I wanted to let people know about this Vikas!!!
Me: Don't you feel that if in actuality you had done Vikas there would have been no need for a Vikas Yatra to inform people as they would have felt the benefits??? Your detractors, and let me assure many are form your own Party, say that the Vikas Yatra was to tom-tom inexistent Vikas!!!!
Amrinder: See the turnout at my Vikas Rally stops!!!
Me: Then why were morphed photographs duplicating crowds put in the papers…. I hear there were a lot a red faces in your camp on this!!!
Amrinder: No comments…….. I still maintain that people came out in multitudes to thank me for the Vikas I've done.
Me: Funny that you say this, because just yesterday there was a news item on TV that showed a humongous Akali Rally and when Badal questioned the rally on your touted Vikas the crowd had shouted back in unison 'Bakwaas'!!!

All of a sudden Amrinder says that he's late for an appointment and vamooses. This is Bharat Kumar and I hope you've found this episode of Crankily Speaking both informative and enjoyable!!
