INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK

The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) Managing Director Tarun Shridhar is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that Himachal Pradesh becomes the hot & much sought after tourist destination all through the year. While talking to <whispersinthecorridors.com> he disclosed "we propose to promote eco-tourism in a big way. In fact the heritage properties managed by HPTDC have been completely restored and can compete with the best in business".

Tarun Shridhar is totally dedicated for the cause of Tourism in Himachal Pradesh. "The expansion efforts are focused on hitherto unexplored areas. We are very aggressively promoting rural / farm / orchard tourism," said Shridhar adding that all steps were being taken to protect Ecological balance & biodiversity in the state. Several rural home stays have been attached with the HPTDC as its franchisees .In his following interview Tarun Shridhar also said "Our USP is budget tourism and it would not be an exaggeration to claim that HPTDC is the best in this business."

1/ What added attractions are there to woo tourists in Himachal Pradesh?

Himachal has emerged as a preferred destination for adventure and leisure tourism. We are continuously striving to give value added services and experience to the tourists. Cultural pageants, food festivals etc. have become a regular feature during the peak tourist seasons. Unique events such as mountain biking, adventure races, Para-gliding, Himalayan run, apple festival etc. are the recently added attractions. With the annual growth above 15%, these multiple strategies seem to be working well. We propose to promote eco-tourism in a big way.

2/ How are you able to sustain inflow of tourists, particularly during summers?

Summer is the peak tourist season for us, and we are fortunate that our state is such a well established tourist destination that we have to make little efforts to sustain inflow of tourist arrivals during summer. Our focus during this period is to provide a pleasant and hassle free stay to the tourists. Our promotion and marketing strategy concentrates on reinforcing the unparalleled scenic beauty of the state coupled with its social stability and the reputation of Himachal as a safe and peaceful state.

3/ Will you please tell us regarding expansion plans of HP Tourism Development Corporation Ltd.?

HP Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has a network of 60 hotels and resorts and 11 stand alone restaurants and cafes, all located in the most scenic locations of the state. While we are gradual in expanding the number of properties, the emphasis is on proper maintenance and upkeep. We have made substantial investment in repair, renovation and restoration of all our properties. In fact the heritage properties managed by HPTDC have been completely restored and can compete with the best in business. The expansion efforts are focused on hitherto unexplored areas.

4/ Nowadays stress is on village tourism & setting up of budget hotels. What is your esteemed corporation doing in that direction?

We are very aggressively promoting rural / farm / orchard tourism. Several rural home stays have been attached with the HPTDC as its franchisees. We do their entire marketing. The home owners are also given basic training in tourism and hospitality management. The scheme is slowly gaining popularity and besides tourism promotion, it would give tremendous boost to rural economy. We have also attached several private budget hotels with us for increasing our room capacity. Our USP is budget tourism and it would not be an exaggeration to claim that HPTDC is the best in this business.

5/ What type of innovative approach are you adopting to ensure regular flow of inbound tourists to Himachal Pradesh through out the year?

We have been positioning Himachal as a destination for all seasons and for all reasons. Our unique strength is the five distinct seasons, each offering its own experience. We have been offering attractive packages to senior citizens' students, corporates, besides honeymoon couples, herbal trail, devi darshan, adventure packages etc. We have been reasonably successful in breaking the seasonality factor which is a strong influence on tourism industry.

6/ What steps have been taken by your corporation to safeguard Ecology of your state?

We are extremely conscious that ecology and the rich bio-diversity is our core strength. We must guard it zealously to promote sustainable tourism. All our tourism promotion and development strategies underline this belief. Our Tourism Policy advocates development of responsible tourism i.e. tourism that protects and nurtures the rich environment of the state. Eco-tourism is going to be a major thrust area in future.

"Politics is an art of impossible" Sonia Gandhi

Congress President Mrs.Sonia Gandhi, it seems, has now understood what politics is about. This was explicit from her recent speech that she delivered in the Netherlands. She in a politically astute statement said "politics is not the art of possible, but it is the art of impossible." Obviously a number of political events that are on the anvil, weighed heavily on her mind. Mainly they are: Presidential poll, AICC reshuffle, Cabinet reshuffle at the Centre, Rahul Gandhi's launch in more active politics, dismal performance of Congress in Hindi heartland of North India & how to unshackle the coterie of sycophants that surrounds her.

Pranab Mukherjee ko gussa kyun aaya?

FORUM

Exclusion of these officers is amazing

The exclusion of some of the outstanding officers like Joy Oommen, Dr. Jacob Thomas, Jagan Mathew etc. is at best very odd. Officers who have put 30 years of commendable service with impeccable credentials are left out when some with on going vigilance cases made to the list. It is a sad phenomenon.
Dr Thomas Verghese

IFS cadre in Orissa receiving raw deal
IFS cadre in Orissa is receiving raw (est) deal from the state government. Just have a look at the promotion position amongst all AIS in the state.
supertime Scale: IAS- 1992batch, IPS- 1988, IFS-1978 batch. Oviously the state government do not require IFS officers in the state. Will it not be fair on the part of the government to move the GOI to abolish IFS cadre?

A K Mohapatra

Why only IAS officers ?
Why IAS. Let them invite officers from other service (open) and judge the performance if the IAS are doing better and serving the people more.
P K Mishra

There is no administrative service in US
It is surprising to note that the entire batch of IAS officers of 1991 batch are visiting US where there is no administrative service. Will they come back and recommend to the Government of India toabolish such generalist service and arrange for specialists in various fields.
P Dash

This will be a paid holiday
This is nothing but a paid foreign holiday at tax payers' cost to a pampered cadre. IAS bureaucracy is obviously the horse which is driving the government cart to their full advantage. Long live IAS bureaucracy . Governments will come and go as many other things in this world.
P. Keshav

Importance of other services
Announce the departments which are in mess and ask for officers to join the posts. No IAS will join to bring it to normal. but many others from other sevice will opt and do good job. The Govt. may note..

TAIL-PIECE

Pretty Deep........ .....Think About It!
A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like."

The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table.

In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water.

The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths.

The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.

The Lord said, "You have seen Hell."

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which again made the holy man's mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking.

The holy man said, "I don't understand."

It is simple" said the Lord, "it requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves."

Aaj Ki Aawaz

PM says that Congress had backed NDA's candidate in the previous Presidential election,
Demands that NDA reciprocates in this election and agrees to Congress's selection!!!

Well PM ji first put up a candidate like Kalam who no one can refuse support to,
The candidates your Party suggests your own Allies boo!!!

How can he expect support for a person like Shivraj???
Even to make such a suggestion aani chaiye laaj.

Now Congress is contemplating Motilal Vora's name,
The response form Allies and NDA is going to be the same!!!

Motilal is a backroom boy and is not fit to be Rashtrapathi,
He's a backroom boy because he's got a jalebi kind of matti (mind)!!!!

Can Shivraj or Motitlal be compared to Kalam,
For Kalam everyone's hand automatically goes up in salaam!!!

But the PM is HMV …. Her Majesty's Voice,
Whatever Madam says that PM ji karte hai voice!!

NDA was decisive ... see how they had decided on Kalaam!!
With UPA everyday there's a new naam!!

Vajpayee too had to handle a host of Allies…. and he did it with tact!!!
UPA's made its Allies like the Betaal on Vikram's back and this is a fact!!!

Why doesn't Congress realize that its Allies as on date do not want to face an election??
And neither is Congress in any position to face people making their selection!!!

But then call their bluff and they'll run for cover!!!
Damocles Sword of withdrawal of support on Congress's head will no longer hover!!!

Pranab Da says Sarkaar will last its term…..does he have any doubt???
Does he feel that before its term this Sarkaar will be out???

Why make such a statement ….. people will say where there is smoke there is fire!!!
Now people will ask how , by whom and when hoye gee yeh Sakaar fire!!!

Dada you may be the trouble shooter…. but why shoot your gob!!!
On your own Sarkaar this grenade why did you lob????

And he's made a hint on who'll fire by saying that Reds will not leave UPA in red!!!
For his info Reds ne nahi kiya hai yeh Sarkaar ko wed!!!

Because had they wed this Sarkaar then they would have been part of the Sarkaar!!!
Commies are giving support only from bahaar!!!

In Tilburg Sonia said that for her power never held any attraction!!
But power is everything for Congressis though for her it may be just a fraction!!!

She said that she wanted to keep non-secular forces at bay!!!
But for Congress's 'divide and rule' policies India karr raha hai pay!!!

Hope her inner aawaz gets to read aaj ki aawaz!!!
And tells her that with Congress public is very naaraaz!!

Arjun's Quota and Manmohan's love for the majority minority should be curtailed!!!
After UP Congress should realize that these do not pay because in UP Congress failed!!

Its only a matter of time before Big B is brought to book for his land misadventures!!
And punishment should be harsh so that people are discouraged from such adventures!!

Seems in Bollywood the whose who is involved in circumventing the law on Farm land!
Law ka bajaa diya hai inn sabh ne band!!!

A Farmer is one who not only owns agricultural hand but also does farming!!!!
Any leeway and the intention behind the law the Maharashtra Sarkaar is harming!!!

Deshmukh because of his son has a soft corner for the filmy lot!!!
Hope he does not try to cover up the farm land grab rot???

Chandigarh's Administration boasts that its made Chandigarh smoke free!!!
The smoking right under its nose it cannot see!!!

How about shutting down the Hookah Cafes… smoking ke liye kids ko karr rahe hai addict??
Why have these Cafes escaped the no smoking edict???

Chandigarh Administration boasts that they've made Boutique Liquor vends where even women can buy!!!
This is Administration's way of ensuring that Chandigarh hits a new high!!

See the game that Gavaskar tried to play in selection of Coach!!!
Let a bowler become Coach so that a Batting coach has to be appointed was his soch!!

Behind this soch was his jeeja Gundappa Vishy!!
When he made his preference for Emburey known many felt something was fishy!!

Gavaskar wanted his jeeja to be made the batting Coach.... Gavaskar's game!!
After getting Emburey thru he would have demanded that a batting Coach Board should name!!

Pawar and his lot are playing games with Indian Cricket!!!
Indian cricket is on a sticky wicket!!!
