Empanelment of 1988 batch IAS officers to the rank of Joint Secretary in the Government of India has taken place on Monday.

Rajeev Sharma to be Additional Secretary Health
Rajeev Sharma is being tipped to be Additional Secretary Health and Family Welfare in the Government of India. He is 1976 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre.

Who will be Secretary Disinvestment ?
Who will be new Secretary Disinvestment in the Government of India? Names of three IAS officers and one IFS officer are in circulation for the post. They are Mssrs Renuka Vishwanathan 1971 batch, Ranjit Issar 1972 batch, Pradip Kumar 1973 batch and 1971 batch IFS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre K K Gupta.

Where to go for foreign training?
While 1991 batch of the IAS is geared up to go to USA for foreign training, the utility of this training is being questioned in a neighbouring country. Evaluation of regular training of senior Civil Service of Pakistan officers at JFK School of Government at Harvard revealed that it was akin to a picnic. One view is that the officers should be sent to China for training; the other view is that since the Kennedy School is not a top school in the Harvard family, another American institution should be roped in. In the mean time, training of officers selected for the 2007 training, 7 of Additional Secretary and 33 of Joint Secretary rank, has been put on hold.

Other services are also doing better job

Ofcourse there may be some IAS officers who can claim to devote a substantial part of 24 hours to official duties, but number of such officers in other services is definitely higher. IAS should show superiority in terms of performance, where it is badly lacking, and not by such hollow drum beating.

CGHS should be abolished

I am fully in agreement with a view expressed in your columns that the CGHS should be abolished. I have availed of the " services " of this set up for more than 20 years and it has generally been a harrowing time consuming process with lack of quality service being provided. Many a times one has resorted to going to the private sector set ups to avail prompt, excellent, quality service but has suffered with a purse rendered lighter in view of having to shell out of your own pocket. Please disband the CGHS set up which is a WHITE ELEPHANT chomping taxpayers money. The sooner, the better.

As the grapevine has it, the decision comes close on heels of protests by Shiv Sainiks' action on cyber cafés in Mumbai .
