Thirty six IAS officers belonging to 1974 batch have been empanelled to the rank of Secretary in the Government of India.

Dr Pradeep Kumar Monga, 1980 batch IAS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre, has reportedly resigned from service. He was given choice by Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) but he reportedly did not want to leave the United Nations. He was with UNDP for long a time. Then he joined UNIDO where he was absorbed finally.

All eyes on Shishir Priyadarshi

All eyes are now on 1980 batch IAS officer of UP cadre Sishir Priyadarshi.. He holds the unique distinction, even beating Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officers, of staying in a single foreign city Geneva continuously for 12 years. No IAS officer has ever achieved this feat. First 3 years (1995-98) in Indian Embassy in Geneva, then 3 years (1998-2001) in an NGO, South-South Centre (where Indian Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh was many years ago), and then for last 6 years (2001-present) in WTO.

Empanelment of 1985 batch IAS officers

Several officers from 1985 batch have been empanneled as Joint secretary after review. The names are A K Singh , JRK Rao (Bihar), Amita Prasad (Karnataka), Veena ISh (AP), MGVK Bhanu, Saraswati Prasad, Sumit Jerath (Assam Meghalaya), Sanjeev Gupta (HP), C Roul (Punjab) and Inderjeet Singh and Subrato Biswas (Kerala).

A K Goyal is likely to be appointed as Joint Secretary in the Indian Ministry of Environment & Forests .Goyal who is an IFS officer of the 1981 batch, is currently Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in Government of India (GOI).

Dubious distinction by officers at SEBI !

Certain officials in the "Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI)"seem to be acquiring dubious distinction who after joining keep getting extensions. For example Anant Ramesh who had joined the SEBI as Director Vigilance in 2003 has been continuing on two extensions. His 3rd extension for another one and a half years has been recommended.Similarly,Ravi Bhandari who is an IRS officer of the 1987 batch has been recommended for five year extension in SEBI where he had already served five year deputation .Earlier he did his five deputation with the "Shipping Corporation of India"(SCI) in Mumbai.

Passing of uncharitable remarks is not new

Passing of uncharitable remarks by a Presidential nominee is not a new thing. It had happened earlier when the then Indian Prime Minister Mrs.Indira Gandhi had declared Giani Zail Singh as the Congress's nominee to the post of President. His remarks had created a big stir. This is not surprising

The situation where a Secretary to the Government reports to Cabinet Secretary who is a bit junior to him is not too bizarre. Why it is being reported is that the IAS has created a system and popular perception where it seems piquant. In the days of the ICS, most people retired as Collectors (the more senior the Collector, the larger District he held), and quite a few very senior men reported to Commissioners who started junior to them. The Secretariat was invariably manned by officers junior to these senior Collectors. This had its own pitfalls, the seniors often did not exactly listen to the juniors and gave their own advice and the advice of these seniors was respected. The IAS has become even more heaven born than the ICS and keeps talking of the system as it is and any thought of any change is anathema to this status quoist lobby of vested interests.
