In fact the heritage properties managed by HPTDC have been completely restored and can compete with the best in business". Tarun Shridhar is totally dedicated for the cause of Tourism in Himachal Pradesh. "The expansion efforts are focused on hitherto unexplored areas. We are very aggressively promoting rural / farm / orchard tourism," said Shridhar adding that all steps were being taken to protect Ecological balance & biodiversity in the state. Several rural home stays have been attached with the HPTDC as its franchisees .In his following interview Tarun Shridhar also said "Our USP is budget tourism and it would not be an exaggeration to claim that HPTDC is the best in this business." 1/ What added attractions are there to woo tourists in Himachal Pradesh? Himachal has emerged as a preferred destination for adventure and leisure tourism. We are continuously striving to give value added services and experience to the tourists. Cultural pageants, food festivals etc. have become a regular feature during the peak tourist seasons. Unique events such as mountain biking, adventure races, Para-gliding, Himalayan run, apple festival etc. are the recently added attractions. With the annual growth above 15%, these multiple strategies seem to be working well. We propose to promote eco-tourism in a big way. 2/ How are you able to sustain inflow of tourists, particularly during summers? Summer is the peak tourist season for us, and we are fortunate that our state is such a well established tourist destination that we have to make little efforts to sustain inflow of tourist arrivals during summer. Our focus during this period is to provide a pleasant and hassle free stay to the tourists. Our promotion and marketing strategy concentrates on reinforcing the unparalleled scenic beauty of the state coupled with its social stability and the reputation of Himachal as a safe and peaceful state. 3/ Will you please tell us regarding expansion plans of HP Tourism Development Corporation Ltd.? HP Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has a network of 60 hotels and resorts and 11 stand alone restaurants and cafes, all located in the most scenic locations of the state. While we are gradual in expanding the number of properties, the emphasis is on proper maintenance and upkeep. We have made substantial investment in repair, renovation and restoration of all our properties. In fact the heritage properties managed by HPTDC have been completely restored and can compete with the best in business. The expansion efforts are focused on hitherto unexplored areas. 4/ Nowadays stress is on village tourism & setting up of budget hotels. What is your esteemed corporation doing in that direction? We are very aggressively promoting rural / farm / orchard tourism. Several rural home stays have been attached with the HPTDC as its franchisees. We do their entire marketing. The home owners are also given basic training in tourism and hospitality management. The scheme is slowly gaining popularity and besides tourism promotion, it would give tremendous boost to rural economy. We have also attached several private budget hotels with us for increasing our room capacity. Our USP is budget tourism and it would not be an exaggeration to claim that HPTDC is the best in this business. 5/ What type of innovative approach are you adopting to ensure regular flow of inbound tourists to Himachal Pradesh through out the year? We have been positioning Himachal as a destination for all seasons and for all reasons. Our unique strength is the five distinct seasons, each offering its own experience. We have been offering attractive packages to senior citizens' students, corporates, besides honeymoon couples, herbal trail, devi darshan, adventure packages etc. We have been reasonably successful in breaking the seasonality factor which is a strong influence on tourism industry. 6/ What steps have been taken by your corporation to safeguard Ecology of your state? We are extremely conscious that ecology and the rich bio-diversity is our core strength. We must guard it zealously to promote sustainable tourism. All our tourism promotion and development strategies underline this belief. Our Tourism Policy advocates development of responsible tourism i.e. tourism that protects and nurtures the rich environment of the state. Eco-tourism is going to be a major thrust area in future.

FORUM Suggestions for Sixth Pay Commission I would like to put forth certain suggestions for the sixth Pay Commission
through your esteemed website: 1. Historically, the salaries of Civil Servants in India which used
to be very high, was cut post independence as it was felt that
high salaries was out of sync with the poor country India was then.
In view of the fact that today, government salaries are by far too low
compared to the private and public sector/autonomous bodies/banks and
even the judicial services(as a result of judicial interference in clearly
an anomalous situation, officers of the provincial judicial services
are paid much more than officers of the all India Services, even though
they have to compete only in their provinces, and the officers of the
Provincial Civil Services are paid far lesser than their judicial service
counterparts and have fewer perks, in what is clear cut discrimination),
this position needs revisiting. Salaries, perks etc of civil servants
also need to be benchmarked with the salaries and perks of judicial
officers and judges of superior courts, parliamentarians and Public
Sector/ Banks etc. 2. Perks vary across services. Some services like the Foreign Service
or Audit and Accounts have practically no perks in India except
at very senior levels, some like the Railways have huge bungalows, cars
and trains at very junior levels. Even in the same service, perks vary
from post to post. One reason why field postings are preferred vastly
over secretariat positions is the lack of perks in the secretariat.
Perks are also wasteful, e.g. every staff car means a driver whose pay,
residential accommodation, health and pension are the long term liability
of the government. In my view therefore, perks should be abolished uniformly
i.e. they should be monotised and the same given to all officers of
all services of a particular rank. 3. Health benefits. The CHGS is the home of many a scam and is totally
outdated. The worst possible services at huge cost (due to rampant rent
seeking). It is time that the CGHS be abolished, to be replaced by a
system of health insurance the premium of which can be paid for by the
Government. 4. Salary differentials across services. As a vestige of colonial times,
the IAS and IFS are still paid two increments more than other except
at entry level. This is an anomalous situation and needs remedying.
This differential also needlessly increases the burden on the exchequer.
5. Differences in promotion: Even when recruitment is through the same
exam, in the same class(Group A) at the same starting pay, various services
have different promotional avenues. For example, railways and accounts
services have much faster promotions than the Customs Service. Officers
of higher rank in the Civil Services Exam who opted for the IFS ahead
of the IAS are languishing at Joint Secretary level while IAS officers
have been promoted to Additional Secretary. This system needs revisiting.
In the absence of other alternatives, let promotions be determined by
rank in the Civil Service Exam (or any other mode of distinguishing),
and not the Service. 6. A decade is too long a time for a Pay Commission. Let there be a provision for a Pay Commission every five-six years. A K Singh HP should do something I am speaking from Shimla where we come every year. There is fast deterioration in infrastructure. The Taxis are without meters and tourists feel harassed. The roads are crowded from Panjore onward. HP should do something drastic if they want tourists to come R C Arora What is this ? Whats this CHEENI KUM...ZAMEEN KUM...KISAANI KUM... Ravi Pipal Do you know about Mukesh Ambani's new residence ? Mukesh Ambani's new residence - a 27-storey building will have parking
for 168 cars, three helipads, a theatre and a staff of 600 for its upkeep.
27 FLOORS: According to the plan, the house will rise to a height of 173.12 meters, equivalent to that of a regular 60-storeyed residential building. However , Antilia will have only 27 storeys in all. SIX FLOORS FOR PARKING: The first six floors will be reserved for parking alone, and that too for cars belonging only to Mukesh's family. Space for a total of 168 imported cars has been earmarked here. ENTERTAINMENT FLOOR: The eighth floor will have an entertainment centre comprising a mini-theatre . BALCONIES WITH GARDENS: The rooftop of the mini-theatre will serve as a garden, and immediately above that, three more balconies with terrace gardens. THE HEALTH FLOORS: While the ninth floor will a 'refuge' floor - meant to be used for rescue in emergencies - two floors above that will be set aside for health. It will have facilities for athletics and a swimming pool, while the other will have a health club. FOR GUESTS: There will be a two-storeyed glass-fronted apartment for the Ambani family's guests above the health floors. FAMILY: The four floors at the top, that will provide a view of the Arabian Sea and a superb view of the city's skyline, will be for Mukesh, his wife Neeta, their three kids and Mukesh's mother Kokilaben. AIR SPACE FLOOR: Two floors above the family's residence will be set aside as maintenance areas, and on top of that will be an 'air space floor,' which will act as a control room for helicopters landing on the helipad above. There will be three helipads there. STAFF: Nearly 600 staffers are expected to work in the building. Contributed by -Col.
