INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK
The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) Managing
Director Tarun Shridhar is leaving no stone unturned to ensure
that Himachal Pradesh becomes the hot & much sought after tourist
destination all through the year. While talking to <whispersinthecorridors.com>
he disclosed "we propose to promote eco-tourism in a big way. In
fact the heritage properties managed by HPTDC have been completely restored
and can compete with the best in business".
Tarun Shridhar is totally dedicated for the cause of Tourism in Himachal
Pradesh. "The expansion efforts are focused on hitherto unexplored
areas. We are very aggressively promoting rural / farm / orchard tourism,"
said Shridhar adding that all steps were being taken to protect Ecological
balance & biodiversity in the state. Several rural home stays have
been attached with the HPTDC as its franchisees .In his following interview
Tarun Shridhar also said "Our USP is budget tourism and it would
not be an exaggeration to claim that HPTDC is the best in this business."
1/ What added attractions are there to woo tourists in Himachal
Pradesh?
Himachal has emerged as a preferred destination for adventure and leisure
tourism. We are continuously striving to give value added services and
experience to the tourists. Cultural pageants, food festivals etc. have
become a regular feature during the peak tourist seasons. Unique events
such as mountain biking, adventure races, Para-gliding, Himalayan run,
apple festival etc. are the recently added attractions. With the annual
growth above 15%, these multiple strategies seem to be working well.
We propose to promote eco-tourism in a big way.
2/ How are you able to sustain inflow of tourists, particularly
during summers?
Summer is the peak tourist season for us, and we are fortunate that
our state is such a well established tourist destination that we have
to make little efforts to sustain inflow of tourist arrivals during
summer. Our focus during this period is to provide a pleasant and hassle
free stay to the tourists. Our promotion and marketing strategy concentrates
on reinforcing the unparalleled scenic beauty of the state coupled with
its social stability and the reputation of Himachal as a safe and peaceful
state.
3/ Will you please tell us regarding expansion plans of HP Tourism
Development Corporation Ltd.?
HP Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has a network of 60 hotels
and resorts and 11 stand alone restaurants and cafes, all located in
the most scenic locations of the state. While we are gradual in expanding
the number of properties, the emphasis is on proper maintenance and
upkeep. We have made substantial investment in repair, renovation and
restoration of all our properties. In fact the heritage properties managed
by HPTDC have been completely restored and can compete with the best
in business. The expansion efforts are focused on hitherto unexplored
areas.
4/ Nowadays stress is on village tourism & setting up of budget
hotels. What is your esteemed corporation doing in that direction?
We are very aggressively promoting rural / farm / orchard tourism.
Several rural home stays have been attached with the HPTDC as its franchisees.
We do their entire marketing. The home owners are also given basic training
in tourism and hospitality management. The scheme is slowly gaining
popularity and besides tourism promotion, it would give tremendous boost
to rural economy. We have also attached several private budget hotels
with us for increasing our room capacity. Our USP is budget tourism
and it would not be an exaggeration to claim that HPTDC is the best
in this business.
5/ What type of innovative approach are you adopting to ensure regular
flow of inbound tourists to Himachal Pradesh through out the year?
We have been positioning Himachal as a destination for all seasons
and for all reasons. Our unique strength is the five distinct seasons,
each offering its own experience. We have been offering attractive packages
to senior citizens' students, corporates, besides honeymoon couples,
herbal trail, devi darshan, adventure packages etc. We have been reasonably
successful in breaking the seasonality factor which is a strong influence
on tourism industry.
6/ What steps have been taken by your corporation to safeguard Ecology
of your state?
We are extremely conscious that ecology and the rich bio-diversity
is our core strength. We must guard it zealously to promote sustainable
tourism. All our tourism promotion and development strategies underline
this belief. Our Tourism Policy advocates development of responsible
tourism i.e. tourism that protects and nurtures the rich environment
of the state. Eco-tourism is going to be a major thrust area in future.

Suggestion for Pay Commission
The comments in Forum made interesting reading. The civil services tho
considered/rated as the highest services is contrdictory in terms of
perks and salaries.
Keeping the high cost of living in mind, the 6th pay commission has
to give what is due to the civil servant. The DA of 100-120 Rs.HRA,20%
of the basic salary,50-75 dollars per day on foriegn visits to quote
a few egs. need to relooked.A civil servant has to slog at times for
24 hours. No holidays(for IAS/IPS officers), has to be disciplined honest
and responsible.He/she is the backbone/steel frame of the adminstraion. They
should not seek favours. That will keep there head high.To maintain this
its the responsibilty of the government to keep the officers comfortable
by giving reasonable salaries and perks.
K Ratnaprabha
CGHS should be abolished
A.K.Singh says
"Health benefits. The CHGS is the home of many a scam and is totally
outdated. The worst possible services at huge cost (due to rampant rent
seeking). It is time that the CGHS be abolished, to be replaced by a
system of health insurance the premium of which can be paid for by the
Government"
The poor quality of medical service is the main reason why Govt. servants
dies soon after retirement. This saves on the pension benefits. Keeping
CGHS is a brilliant financial decision which A.K.Singh, being IRS officer,
would admire.

Section of Gurjars are not happy!!
Now feeling even more scrappy!!!
Wait and watch this is just the start as many more fires have been lit!!
As many other communities into ST category want to fit!!!
Why is the Sarkaar not tackling creamy layer matter???
Creamy layer undemining the objective should be clear even to a mad
hatter!!!
Sarkaar has to tackle the creamy layer matter in fairly...sooner than
later!!!
To the true objective Quota should cater!!
The SC has called the Gurjar Bandh a National Shame,
UPA for getting the Nation into a Quota mindset is to blame!!
Raje Government is to blame for underestimating the Gurjar revolt,
After the horse had bolted door kiya Raje ne bolt!!!
Amar Singh has his ways of staying in khabbar!!!
Though his political career is in the kabbar (grave)!!!
He says that a Law Officer approached him to fix a case!!!
Seems it was the disproportionate asset case joh Mulayam karr raha hai
face!!!
Was this drama for Mulayam's sake????
Because in SP many are trying ki from his perch Amar ko karre shake!!
Big B could have bought land anywhere in India but he needed the land
backdated!!
And so this Barabanki land allotment was created!!
The backdated Land allotment made Big B eligible for Lonavala land!!!
He became a Farmer just by wave of Mulayam's hand!!!
Of course Big B must be having his cover up story but seems it'll not
suffice!!!
And for this jiggery pokery he's going to pay the price!!!
His wifey Jaya too is going to face the heat!!!
Chucked out of Rajya Sabha twice will indeed be a feet!!!
In TN Karuna - Amma war has been kick-started
back at each other's
throats!!!
Both have got each other by their goats!!!
AIADMK and DMK are steeped in sycophancy!!!
Sycophancy both Karuna and Amma fancy!!!
But if Karuna plans to avenge his being lifted by Cops then TN Cops
need to strategise!!!
Using a crane to lift Amma would indeed be wise!!
Amrinder is applying to the Court to be allowed to go to London for
ilaaj!!!
From his games nahi aaye ga Amrinder baaj!!!
Rumours abound that treatment is just an excuse.. its his cross border
love story!!
They say his wifey is hoping that Court will tell him 'sorry'!!!
Should the Court allow a man accused of siphoning money overseas go
overseas???
Hope this angle the Court sees!!!
And Amrinder seems to be not only lucky in love but he's lucky in Court
too!!
He got bail up to July 31
a decision that many in the Legal Fraternity
did boo!!
In Goa seems Congress has done better than expected!!
Done much better than was being projected!!
I humbly eat crow,
Because I'd said that Congress's tally would be low!!
Muslim card failed in UP but in Goa Christian card came good,
Now BJP needs to look under its hood!!
This time seems the Builders too had a hand,
Seems they were in favor of the Hand!!!
BCCI only wants a Gora Coach....seems Whatmore is not white enough????
Some say he tried to use Fair and Lovely but BCCI called his bluff!!!
If this is the case then even Ranatunga will not make the grade,
That leaves Ford whose a Gora
.. seems Team Coach he'll be made!!
But if Ranatunga can be considered then what about Kapil Bhaji or Mohinder
Amarnath?
Both can do a marvelous job saath saath!!
But then they are not from Pawar's State,
So this seals their fate!!!
You have to have a 'kar' at the end of your surname to get Pawar's yes,
And even if you don't kar or perform or deliver he'll help you out of
the mess!!!

TAKE OVER OF THE LEFT OVER
DHL Exel, a renowned group of Multi-National Companies have recently
taken over Lee & Muirhead Pvt.Ltd., an ISO Certified Company, pioneer
in the field of customs clearance, consolidation, freight forwarding,
bulk handling, warehousing, distribution, valuable cargo, multi-modal
transportation etc. and having offices at all over the country. As per
the MOU, Lee & Muirhead Pvt.Ltd. have been taken over for approx.
Rs.500 crores and full control was acquired on May 1, 2007. The entire
operations including staffs, liabilities and assets were transferred
in favour of DHL Exel. However, it is interesting to note that for first
time in the history of India, group of employees have refused to join
a big Multi-National Company and have rather preferred to continue in
an Indian company. The entire team of customs clearance wing at Delhi
and Mumbai after conscious decision decided to work under the leadership
of Mehta Brothers who were earlier their superiors in Lee & Muirhead
Pvt.Ltd, New Delhi. The entire staff as well as existing customers of
the above wing have such a tremendous faith in the dynamism of Mehta
Brothers that all of them refused to be lured away by the future projections
of the Multi National Company and rejected their offer. They are now
working under the banner of AV Global Corporation Pvt.Ltd., New Delhi.
This is a welcome trend and a matter of satisfaction that lot of faith
has been reposed in the emerging Indian leadership at a time they had
an option to join a renowned Multi National Company and the courage
of the employees and their customers deserves to be appreciated.
