INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK

The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) Managing Director Tarun Shridhar is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that Himachal Pradesh becomes the hot & much sought after tourist destination all through the year. While talking to <whispersinthecorridors.com> he disclosed "we propose to promote eco-tourism in a big way. In fact the heritage properties managed by HPTDC have been completely restored and can compete with the best in business".

Tarun Shridhar is totally dedicated for the cause of Tourism in Himachal Pradesh. "The expansion efforts are focused on hitherto unexplored areas. We are very aggressively promoting rural / farm / orchard tourism," said Shridhar adding that all steps were being taken to protect Ecological balance & biodiversity in the state. Several rural home stays have been attached with the HPTDC as its franchisees .In his following interview Tarun Shridhar also said "Our USP is budget tourism and it would not be an exaggeration to claim that HPTDC is the best in this business."

1/ What added attractions are there to woo tourists in Himachal Pradesh?

Himachal has emerged as a preferred destination for adventure and leisure tourism. We are continuously striving to give value added services and experience to the tourists. Cultural pageants, food festivals etc. have become a regular feature during the peak tourist seasons. Unique events such as mountain biking, adventure races, Para-gliding, Himalayan run, apple festival etc. are the recently added attractions. With the annual growth above 15%, these multiple strategies seem to be working well. We propose to promote eco-tourism in a big way.

2/ How are you able to sustain inflow of tourists, particularly during summers?

Summer is the peak tourist season for us, and we are fortunate that our state is such a well established tourist destination that we have to make little efforts to sustain inflow of tourist arrivals during summer. Our focus during this period is to provide a pleasant and hassle free stay to the tourists. Our promotion and marketing strategy concentrates on reinforcing the unparalleled scenic beauty of the state coupled with its social stability and the reputation of Himachal as a safe and peaceful state.

3/ Will you please tell us regarding expansion plans of HP Tourism Development Corporation Ltd.?

HP Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has a network of 60 hotels and resorts and 11 stand alone restaurants and cafes, all located in the most scenic locations of the state. While we are gradual in expanding the number of properties, the emphasis is on proper maintenance and upkeep. We have made substantial investment in repair, renovation and restoration of all our properties. In fact the heritage properties managed by HPTDC have been completely restored and can compete with the best in business. The expansion efforts are focused on hitherto unexplored areas.

4/ Nowadays stress is on village tourism & setting up of budget hotels. What is your esteemed corporation doing in that direction?

We are very aggressively promoting rural / farm / orchard tourism. Several rural home stays have been attached with the HPTDC as its franchisees. We do their entire marketing. The home owners are also given basic training in tourism and hospitality management. The scheme is slowly gaining popularity and besides tourism promotion, it would give tremendous boost to rural economy. We have also attached several private budget hotels with us for increasing our room capacity. Our USP is budget tourism and it would not be an exaggeration to claim that HPTDC is the best in this business.

5/ What type of innovative approach are you adopting to ensure regular flow of inbound tourists to Himachal Pradesh through out the year?

We have been positioning Himachal as a destination for all seasons and for all reasons. Our unique strength is the five distinct seasons, each offering its own experience. We have been offering attractive packages to senior citizens' students, corporates, besides honeymoon couples, herbal trail, devi darshan, adventure packages etc. We have been reasonably successful in breaking the seasonality factor which is a strong influence on tourism industry.

6/ What steps have been taken by your corporation to safeguard Ecology of your state?

We are extremely conscious that ecology and the rich bio-diversity is our core strength. We must guard it zealously to promote sustainable tourism. All our tourism promotion and development strategies underline this belief. Our Tourism Policy advocates development of responsible tourism i.e. tourism that protects and nurtures the rich environment of the state. Eco-tourism is going to be a major thrust area in future.

Why this exodus of IAS officers ?

There is an exodus of IAS officers to MNCs in recent times. This indicates the pay they are getting for the hardest labour they put in their service in the present political scenario and the pressure they face. At least the pay commission should make a recommendation to delink the DA for calculation of Income Tax for the salaried persons. This will reduce 50% of the corruption. The pay should be at par with the MNCs to stop further exodus.

M Jayanth

One should learn from Dhiru Bhai !

Prime Minister has rightly taken up the matter of excessive salaries and perks of the CEOs of private sector organisations. Looking at the waste ful expenditure Mukesh Ambani is incurring on his SUPER PALACE ,in a country like India ,shows how sensitive these people are to the condition prevailing in the country. Even in the western countries Super Rich take out a large portion of their earnings for charity - either willingly or forced by the intense public opinion (as in the case of Bill Gates). The position in India is however opposite where these people are only interested in amassing and carrying out avoidable splurging. These people should know that public opinion may build up slowly but it hits hard. So leading an austere life style will not only form a charity, it will also improve their Brand equity ,on which basis Late. Dhirubhai built up his empire

What does Sonia see in Shivraj that she's plugging for him to be next President???
As HM his record has been dismal and he's not fit to be India's first resident!!

Okay she finds him most trusted!!
But this is not the reason why President's Office to him should be entrusted.

Maya's asked for a Brahmin and seems he's the only trusted Brahmin Sonia can see,
There are some other Brahmins but they suffer from ' to be or not to be'!!!

N.D. Tiwari is a Brahmin and is in Maya's good books but not so in Sonia's book!!
Not healthy enough…gives a sick look!!!

Shinde's out because Maya would not want a Dalit to be higher than her!!
She cannot call a Dalit Sir!!!

Pranab is Sonia's trouble shooter and Sonia feels his services are needed!!
And moreover against being made a Candidate Pranab himself pleaded.

Even in his Party Somnath has limited support for becoming President,
Seems just as a bargaining ploy his candidature to UPA by Commies was sent!!!

Sonia has met Maya's condition….. Governor has refused CBI permission,
For Maya this was her first mission!!

Now Maya will fulfil her part of the deal!!!
As its say in Politics there's no free meal!!!

Maya is very clear her support is on a give and take basis,
She'll quote the price whenever demand of support UPA raises!!!

Though in the Taj case Maya is still not out of the woods,
Maya must be praying that SC does not get into one of its 'get to the bottom of it' moods!

What story will Big B's lawyer give in Court??
How will he deny the DM's Report???

The why , how and when is abs clear in this case!!
Big B sure has lost face.

But Big B is not the only one there as number of Stars have taken the same rout!!!
Prime Agricultural land ko kiya hai loot!!!

' I am a Farmer' says Amir Khan…… acting is his pastime!!
He says being actor cum farmer is no crime!!

Fact is these 'acting farmers' subvert the law made to protect farmers and farm zameen,
And these acting Farmers ne farm leeaa hai cheen (snatch)!!!

Hamirpur results show that in HP Congress's game is over!!!
Virbhadra after the results were announced ran for cover!!

Its not only the win but also the margin and the win in practically every booth,
After the results were announced HP Congressis looked as if they'd seen a bhooth!!

In Goa BJP's over confidence and over estimation did them in!!!
BJP had anticipated that Congress rebels and dissenters will win or make BJP win!

And Rudy and Kohli proved to be babes in the woods!!
Could not deliver the goods!!

It's the Jaitleys who have it in them to plan electoral wins,
On such planners and executors hopes BJP pins!!!

So Rajnath Ji for BJP's sake put all ambitions and party politics aside,
By ' law of success' please do abide!!!

Law of success is that nothing should succeed like success….. clearly defined!!
Hence Jaitley should not be sidelined!!!

How can a man accused of Hawala be allowed to go abroad???
Amrinder says it for medical purposes and Media says to meet his Broad!!

Unless the Pen Drive matter is investigated he should not be allowed to go overseas,
Hope this the Court sees!!!

Hawala agent Chetan has given more explosive info that implicates Narwar too!!
He's given info of his dealings with Amrinder's clan's 'whose who'!!!

Raje got brickbats for acting in time to prevent Gurjar unrest,
But bouquets for negotiating a solution….. passed this test!!!

Though still there are rumours that Raje's job is at stake!!
From her CM's post BJP may take!!

Hope she realizes that neither do CM's or Devis walk the ramp???
And its time she started burning the midnight lamp!!!

Like Amrinder she too believes in more play than kaam!!
For getting Royalty to govern is this the daam????

Be Indian get Indian Coach,
How can we cure BCCI's Gora mental moch (sprain)???
