FORUM (The views expressed in this column are necessarily of their respective contributors. We do not own any responsibility, whatsoever, about these contributions). Pointwise reply in brief to Sriram's comments:- 2.After recruitment, the job profile and diversity of the IAS make it undoubtedly an unparalleled service. The IRS and other services, even on deputation go only to the central ministries and very rarely to the state government and the district administration. 3.Only negligible number of IRS/other such services are posted at places like Purulia or Mahamaya Nagar. The GOI can verify this at any time. Again, it is highly ignorant of the challenges of modern day field and development admn. to say that IAS lord it over like ICS in the field.Nothing can be further from the truth today where the numerous challenges are further accentuated by great political pressures, public expectations, judicial tyranny and media campaigns. Even in this scenario the service is delivering.
5."Good postings"in the IAS are not limited to Noida, Delhi, Mumbai etc alone. 6.The closest manner and multitude of capacities at every level in which the IAS works hand in hand with the political executive is again unrivalled by any other service. 7.The factual number of how many IRS have left the government for crore rupee private assignments can again easily be checked by GOI which is bound to be much higher for services like IRS compared to IAS. Manish Chandraa
Excellent rebuttal. I also would add that whenever IRS officers r allowed to join on deputation to the different ministries they are recognised for the excellent work done in whichever ministry he is posted which further disproves that only IAS have the capability to man the various ministries. So please come out of the shell & see the reality. Krishna Let IRS & IAS do their job So now Rajiv Ratan has company in few of his other colleagues !! why have few of the IAS officers started feeling so insecure about IRS and appointed themselves as the custodian for removing all the so called ills and that too with a monopoly ??? let IRS do the job they are doing and let IAS do their job. Let us all of us do our job as efficiently and honestly as possible rather then eying each others job that too with a sense of deprivation. Well, if IAS wants to enter the Revenue Boards, let them provided IRS officers are also allowed to enter the State and Central posting, let their be fair play for everybody. The debate is endless and getting bit unhealthy. There s no denying or doubt that IRS be it customs, IT, central excise or service tax, is the most updated and current department in the entire gamut of services. Perhaps this is the only department whose laws and regulations are subjected to annual scrutiny in form of Budget where substantial relevant Acts are fine tuned with the prevailing time. Forget about bringing IAS officers in revenue, soon we may have to separate Customs, central excise and service tax as each wing is becoming highly specialised. Can we afford to experiment or play havoc with the existing system of revenue mobilization ???? Chander Shekhar
