Private banks have crossed all limits
Recent decision of District Consumer Forum, Delhi, to impose damages of Rs 55 lacs on ICICI bank for brutish behaviour of its recovery agents will be welcomed by all. Some of the private banks have crossed all limits of civilised behaviour by employing goons masquerading as recovery agents to deal with "defaulters" rather than adopting legal methods. On the other hand nationalised banks maintain absolute secrecy in disclosing the names of defaulters who owe lacs of crores to the banks ,defaulters being well known names in corporate world, some of them even being members of government committees or even recipients of government awards. A very gentle approach is followed where big defaulters are involved but total ruthlessness is shown in case of small borrowers. RBI should take some tough measures to deal with extra legal methods of private banks who employ aggressive marketing techniques to give loans and too gentle approach of nationalised banks in dealing with big and corporate defaulters.

SCOPE's functioning under review ?

The Government has taken up review of the functioning of the
Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE). For
quite some time, various Ministries of the Government have
been feeling uneasy about the inability of the SCOPE to
project the achievements of Central Enterprises. There is a
general feeling that Industry bodies like CII, FICCI, etc., are
doing a commendable job within and outside India to project
the positive face of the Indian industry while SCOPE has not
learnt any lesson from the changed economic environment of
the country. Public Enterprises are doing wonderful job but
their achievements remain confined to the files. SCOPE
has never organized a combined show of the capabilities
and achievements of the public enterprises. SCOPE is merely
acting as a real estate agent looking after the two complexex
it has constructed in Delhi. A recast of the SCOPE on the
lines of CII is overdue, contend the industry watchers.
