INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK

Six areas have been identified by Subodh Kumar Goel, Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) of the UCO Bank, for improving efficiency of the staff & enhance reputation of the bank further. For Goyal motivating the workforce comes first then other things follow.

In an interview to <whispersinthecorridors.com>UCO bank's CMD Goel said "I am fully committed to my assignment always. I carry my team along with motivation for their high level of contribution which will lead to better performance and success. This is the secret of my success."

Replying to a question Goel said "we have initiated steps where we are State level Bankers committee (SLBC) conveners to achieve 100% financial inclusion. I am confident that we will achieve the same and it will be beneficial to the customers and for us too as it will increase our business and profits too." Here goes his interview:

1/What is going to be your priority area as CMD of UCO Bank? Please list two such areas.

A- Banking is a service industry. For an institution functioning in the service sector human resources are highly critical. Further more, for banks deposits are the lifeline. Even in deposits the low cost deposits are more important for bringing down the cost of deposits.

In view of the above, the areas on which I will be according top priority are (1) To build up a team to work for a common goal and to explore the potential to take the bank to a higher position than it had occupied at the time of nationalization and till 1980's (2) Maximize CASA. Presently CASA is too low @ 28% of total deposits. I would like it to be at least 35%in a year's time and to minimize Non performing assets (Non performing assets (Non performing assets (NPAs) to 2% of gross advances and 1% of net advances.

2/What is the secret of your success?

A- "The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary". There is no short cut to success, Success follows who are tenacious and who works hard and smart and utilize the opportunities and exploit the available potential. I believe in hard work. I am fully committed to my assignment always. I carry my team along with motivation for their high level of contribution which will lead to better performance and success. This is the secret of my success.

3/What new initiatives you intend to take in the UCO Bank?

A-I plan to introduce new initiatives in the areas of (i) personnel and industrial relations; (ii) strengthening of our Regional Offices specially where we are having the SLBC responsibilities; (iii) treasury operations; (iv) NPA control and recovery measures (iv) improving the standard of customer service (v)quickening the process of CBS rollout.

4/In what way inclusive banking & profitability be synergized?

A-It is estimated that a large number of common people at the bottom of the pyramid have not been brought under the purview of organized banking sector. There is vast scope of business opportunities. This system of banking has proved successful as well as beneficial to all concerned where it was actively followed. In view of the above and also the fact that there is need to bring all the people into the orbit of the banking sector. We have initiated steps where we are SLBC conveners to achieve 100% financial inclusion. I am confident that we will achieve the same and it will be beneficial to the customers and for us too as it will increase our business and profits too.

5/Can you tell us at least one way of fighting unemployment at grassroots both in urban and rural pockets?

A-Unemployment is a serious problem the country has been facing. There is large scale unemployment in rural and urban areas. Banks play a vital role in addressing this problem by providing credit for productive sectors. The credit provided by banks to industries, either. Big, small and medium enterprises provide large scale employment opportunities. In addition, banks also provide direct financing to agriculturists, self-employed people, professionals and self help groups which offer them self employment opportunities.

6/How do you like to chill out & what is your hobby?

A-I enjoy listening music and reading books. I also spend my time with my family and occasionally go out for relaxation. I visit temples quite often and derive moral strength to perform my duties in an efficient manner.

BP drugs cut death rate in diabetes

The largest-ever study of treatments for diabetes has shown that a fixed combination of two blood pressure(BP)lowering drugs reduce the risk of death, as well as the risks of heart and kidney disease. Results from the ADVANCE (Action in Diabetes and Vascular Disease) study were presented at the European Congress of Cardiology in Vienna. One of the study leaders was Professor Stephen MacMohan from The George Institute for International Health Sydney.Professor Nikhil Tandon from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS)who played a key role in the investigation said "the ADVANCE study is the largest clinical trial ever performed in patients with type 2 diabetes, with over 11,000 patients worldwide, and will provide important information for India about the effects of blood pressure lowering, in a broad cross-section of high-risk individuals with type 2 diabetes." This is importantit is estimated that India has 30-35 million people who are diabetic.
Likewise,Dr. Anushka Patel, Study Director also from The George Institute, said "the participants in ADVANCE were already receiving most of the usual treatments provided to patients with diabetes, including other drugs to lower blood pressure. However, addition of the fixed combination of perindopril and indapamide reduced the risk of death from any cause by 14% and the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 18%. In absolute terms, one death would be avoided for every 79 patients treated with the fixed combination of perindopril and indapamide for 5 years. The risk of coronary heart disease events was reduced by 14% and the risk of new or worsening kidney disease was reduced by 21%."The ADVANCE Study was conducted by an international group of independent medical researchers with support from Servier, the manufacturer of perindopril and indapamide, and the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia.

Do not worry about missing the bus

Apropos the whisper,"123 agreement may be buried", I wish to state that we won't be missing much if that happens. After going through the text (thanks to M Lal and Sameer Chadha) I can say that the 'no-gains' far outweigh the 'gains'. True, the agreement affirms that India and US are "two States possessing advanced nuclear technology", it willy nilly tends to FORCE India into a long term 'strategic partnership' more suited to the US than to us and that too on terms that are certainly not equal. The paradigm shift the agreement involves in our concepts of friends and foes in the field of foreign policy is as substantial as the change in the direction of "Quibla" in the history of Islam. It would be wise if such historical changes aren't brought about in a tearing hurry. The timing should definitely be better than the present one as the Indian Parliament and the US Presidency are in the last leg of their current term. Let's not worry about missing the bus. Sometimes you get lift in an AC car after you miss the bus.

What next ?

IAS-Central Services-CSS-CSSS - what next - CSCS and Peons's Service? (But why not? I think we have had enough of this 'me too' thing. What to talk of Services, every single Government employee has an important place, according to the role assigned to him/her in the scheme of things. The problem arises when we look at someone's else's platter and start drooling at the supposedly better dish served to him/her. Let's each be content with our own desserts. And what is this unseemly fracas about CSS and CSSS? CSS is CSS and CSSS is CSSS. Has anybody every heard of a CSS officer bickering that he/she does not have any chance to become Private Secretary/Principal Secretary or Senior Principal Private Secretary.

Aaj Ki Aaawaz

Even as they talk of discussing the Nuclear Deal Commies and Congress fight!!!
Yechury advises that Congress should exercise restraint as Commies could bite!!!

Left has slammed both Manmohan and Sonia for their pro Deal stand!!!!
They are upset with Sonia for terming the Deal as grand!!

This is the public face of Commies….. in private its another story!!!
They say, " Please help us save face'…after for their anti Sonia statements they've said sorry!!!

Commies have never had it better…. power without responsibility,
They've enjoyed power without any accountability!!

But now Indians are holding them accountable for their stand on the Nuclear Deal!!!
India's interests are being overlooked by the Commies most Indians feel!!

The decision to discuss is actually a ploy to give time for Commies to think of an excuse!!!
Congress hopes they'll then be indifferent to the Deal and will no longer accuse!!

Because they'll never accept the Deal…. come what will!!!
Cannot swallow…. too bitter , too big and un-chewable and hence un-swallowable pill!!

There is a chance that ultimately Congress and Commies will agree to disagree!!!
Symbolically Commies will withdraw support and show from their clutches UPA is free!!!

But tacitly support and pressure will be maintained!!!
Withdrawal of support will only be feigned !!!

Though Bardan says that Congress is itching for an election!!!
As per him Congress has been taken in by NDTV's Congress will win more seats projection!!

Advani says snap poll is inevitable.... BJP needs to do some juraab pulling!!
Hope to tackle anti incumbency in BJP ruled States some strategy Advani is mulling!!

And who will BJP project as its PM if it comes to power!!!
As you know nowadays Leadership changes in BJP by the hour!!

BJP should say that PM will be decided after jeeth in election!!!
Then MPs and Party will then make the selection!!!

And BJP has also to brainstorm on neethi…..Allies have to be kept in mind!!!
BJP has to win over Hindu Votes with a pro Hinduvta strategy that Allies will not mind!!!

Yes in BJP many would be feeling… wish Vajpayee's age could be put in reverse gear!!!
Because then on projecting a Leader BJP would have no fear!!!

Congress in the meantime is going out to woo Muslim votes…all stones being turned!!!
Hope they study why in UP by Muslims Congress was spurned!!!

As Congress will be fighting the next election with its back to the wall!!
To be the canvassing mascot of Congress most probably Rahul will not get the call!!!

Has Rahul has shifted his sight to 2014 …. seems 2009 is now no longer his goal???
In 2014 he'll be electoral race ka ghoda and till then he'll continue be a foal!!!

In 2014 he'll be 44…….. and hopefully married and a Padre or Dad!!!
Will no longer be the Baba or proverbial lifetime Lad!!!

Though some say Sonia's going to push him in the deep end in the next general election,
He'll take decisions right from candidates selection.

All that I can say is that he's not getting younger..... aging say by day!!!
For how long in Sonia's shadow will he stay!!!

In Goa the power volcano has again started to rumble!!!
A Party supporting Congress Sarkaar have has started to grumble!!

Maybe there will very soon be another Operation Tumble!!!
Lest Congress is able to placate the Party that karr rahi hai grumble!!

Now Big B has a new excuse for Barabhanki land….spinning skin saving yarns everyday!!!
The land was gifted to him by his Uncle Big B karr raha hai say!!!

First it was that a fan duped him and now Uncle gifted him the zameen!!!!
Big B changes everyday his tune and been (flute)!!!

To drive down to Vaishnodevi why was Sanju Baba given a laal bathi waali car???
J&K Sarkar will say it was for Munna Bhai and not Sanju the star!!!

A police vehicle escorted his laal bathi waali car!!!!
Pilgrimage of a Star!!!

Is Congress telling us that it cares for its own....Sonia's nod is mandatory???
Then to treat this person as a VIP for Congress Sarkaars it becomes obligatory!!!

Quick action helped douse Bokaro CR Mill fire

Prompt action by the Fire Services Department of SAIL's Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) prevented spread of a fire that broke out in the emulsion basement of Tandem Mill-1 of BSL's Cold Rolling Mill on Sunday morning and helped save major machinery and equipment. The Tandem Mill is expected to be put into operation by the evening of 4 th September 2007.

Acting with alacrity and efficiency, the fire-fighting team extinguished the fire, which had started a little before 5 am, within four hours using 11 fire tenders. Vigorous efforts were made by the Bokaro collective to prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding areas, including oil cellars on either side of the emulsion basement, cable galleries, hydraulic station, etc. The damage to the Mill has been minimal.
SAIL has set up a high-power committee to conduct an enquiry into the incident to recommend measures to avoid recurrence of similar nature at any of its plants.
