Indian Minister for Steel, Chemicals and Fertilisers Ram Vilas Paswan in Delhi on August 28,2008 handed over a cheque for Rs.25 Lakhs to the Olympic Bronze Medal winner Sushil Kumar as the reward for his historic performance. The reward was announced by the Minister immediately after Shushil Kumar won the medal in Beijing. The amount has been jointly paid by Steel Authority of India, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, the National Minerals Development Corporation and the Manganese Oars India Limited. Sushil Kumar who participated in the 66 Kg category freestyle wrestling event was among three wrestlers who represented India. The other two were Yogeshwar Dutt and Rajiv Tomar. SAIL will bear the cost of training of the three wrestlers for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.Presenting the cheque Paswan said that the Ministry of Steel will make efforts to help sports organizations/state governments to create world class sports infrastructure in the future. He said, the NMDC has started preparations for selecting 10 promising sports persons between the age group of 13 and 20 and provide them scholarships to enable them to undertake institutional training. It will also provide sponsorship support to the 2010 Commonwealth Games. It will also start a world-class sports academy in the tribal areas of Chattisgarh. RINL has also planned to establish a tribal sports Academy on the Andhra-Orissa border. Paswan said, SAIL also proposes to constitute Rs.10 crore SAIL Sports Talent Promotion Fund for promoting talented players who have potential but are not having adequate means to come up to the competitive level in various national/international sports events.Secretary Ministry of Steel, P.K.Rastogi and SAIL Chairman S.K.Roongta were present on the occasion.

Jagdish Chandra deerves praise

Jagdish Chandra deserves praise for acting on firm conviction that he would serve the country better by joining private enterprise. Those of the IAS who have talent and believe in it should resign from the IAS and go over to private enterprise. Those who do not have belief in themselves should continue in the IAS. The IAS cadre is such a pool of stagnant water where flowers and weeds both have space to exist and continue with full service benefits such as promotion, perks and many other whatnots that go with the post and cadre.

UDCs are nowhere

UDCs are nowhere. This post was nowhere in the Government of India earlier. LDCs were directly promoted to the grade of Assistant. The working of UDC is the same as that of an assistant, but the difference in pay is huge. This is constitutionally wrong and illegal and unjustified. Government policy makers must think about it.

SHABANA AZMI'S INTERVIEW

Apropos Shabana Azmii's interview ,which appeared in Hindustan Times/ Times of India recently, I was horrified that she considers Muslims to be treated unfairly , by our democracy. At a delicate time like now (J&K etc.), one would expect greater circumspection on her part, rather than to join 'rabble rousers'.

And to make an outlandish claim that she could not buy a flat-'because she is a muslim'!!!. . Does she not know of the hugely obscene properties bought by the likes of Shahrukh Khan & Co.?! ! . Did she check properties registered during the year- before making inflammatory remarks like these?

That she couldn't buy a flat has nothing to do with her religion- reasons lie elsewhere, probably affordability! !
While one understands a has been socialite's(with political leanings) attempts to seek centre-stage, what was the compulsion on the part of these 'national dailies' to air such rubbish,just to give her 'a place under the Sun'?

Can Bureaucracy be trusted to deliver?

1.North block which is in charge of managing the Economy of the country cannot even keep its toilets clean. . The toilets even, ten rooms away from FMs cabin are extremely dirty. Any time one has to go to toilet ,one has to shut ones nose tightly lest you faint or vomit.90% of the time there is no water in the toilets and wash basins, and repair work goes on 24X 7, on all days of the year. If you have a bad stomach and you decide to come to office (North Block), only God can help you as entering the toilet cabins is worse than facing execution squad.
2. The question is how does it happen right under the nose of our most efficient minister?
Inefficient management of toilets in North Block only is a symbol or metaphor for inefficient working of our bureaucracy. How is it that our bureaucracy that is supposed to run this country, when it cannot manage even toilets right next to the room of FM.
The answer is in the bureaucratic processes, where no body can be penalized for inefficiencies and there is no reward for outstanding work. If we have to change India we will have to change this first.

Stealing the limelight -Suresh Kalmadi style
I was aghast at the sight of Sushil Kumar, the wrestler in the visuals shown by many private channels, alighting from a three wheeler scooter opposite the residence of L K Advani at Prithviraj Road New Delhi to meet him. I also saw Kalmadi and his cohorts at this get together. They must have naturally arrived in big chauffer driven limousines provided by the Sports Authority of India(SAI).Why could a car not be provided to Sushil Kumar ? Shame to this Govt!We expect the Govt. to order an inquiry into this shameful conduct of the SAI and award appropriate punishment to the guilty including Kalmadi who is taking undue credit for the gold and bronze medals won by our sportspersons for individual events in which the SAI did not make any contributions whatsoever. Why are they stealing the limelight?
