Indian banks well insulated: Raman
India's banking and financial sectors are well regulated and therefore has had little or limited impact of the global meltdown said S. Raman Executive Director, Union Bank of India, in an exclusive talk with whispersinthecorridors.com. Raman while sharing his views with Prakash Pillai, our Magazine-Editor, observed unlike the foreign banks Indian banks were working within the country and were not purely export driven, hence the meltdown has so far not affected Indian Banks.
He said the regulators have stepped in to check inconsistencies in the system and taken corrective measures time and again and it is this aspect of Indian economy which is keeping it going even in these tough times. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Finance ministry's package to keep market sentiments positive and not allow pressure to build up about liquidity crunch has yielded good results, he added.
Referring to the aggressive promotion undertaken by the Union Bank of India, Raman said the bank plans to become the third largest bank in the country. "At a time when banks in foreign countries are pruning staff we are on a recruiting spree," he said. The Union Bank is aiming to start about 500 new branches across India. There are already about 1500 ATMs of the bank in the country, he added.
Union Bank of India is the only bank in India to have cent percent connectivity. The bank under its expansion programme is ensuring optimum utilization of manpower to take care of specialized and diverse banking needs.

Our MP epitomize hollowness!!!
Just 10 turned up at a homage function and showed their shallowness!!!
The function was to pay homage to those who lost their lives in attack on Parliament!
What message to the security forces they sent???
Socho….had the terrorists entered Parliament many MPs could have been shot!!!!
By just 10 of them turning up for the function showed that they are a thankless lot!!!
Imagine the families of those who lost their lives have not got what was promised!!
And our MPs rubbed salt in the wounds when this homage function they missed!!!
Our Mohna goes on like a broken when he gives his rider to fight terror!!!!
He says targeting any religion would be an error!!
I think what he means is that if someone from majority minority is arrested,
By arrests from the majority community this number should be bested!!!
What can the Cops do if a certain religion is responsible for terror??????
Mandating that Cops follow secularism in their work is a grave error!!!
What Mohna should have demanded is that Media and Judiciary do their jobs!!!
Ensure that human rights nobody robs!!!
India can tackle terror only by putting on US's or Israel 's shoulder the gun!!!
But first to wage a war on terror Government has to make up its mann (mind)!!!
And by what one hears seems our Sarkaar has still not made up its mann!!!!
This is true though it may stun!!!!
How can a Country that has faced so many terror attacks still be turning the other cheek??
One reason for the attacks is that the terrorists feel India is week and meek!!!
I was told by someone that one of the points explained to would be terrorists is,
'You will get indirect support from Politicians and you can be sure of this'!!!!
Batla House is an example…… see SP's stand!!!!
Doesn't it look as if SP is giving the terrorists a helping hand!!!!
They alleged that it was an inside job because Sharma did not wear a bullet proof jacket,
Anyone can see they are just creating a politically motivated racket!
Bhardwaj says a new terror law is on anvil!!!!
If you ask me knowing Congress it will be a bitter coated sugar pill!!!
Sugar pill because it'll not be stringent as it should be!!!!
And why…. well Congress's majority minority fixation is easy to see!!
Without a stringent law the fight against terror is toothless!!!
And will put those fighting terror into more and more stress!!!
Rahul has demanded 'leave the Cops alone',
But after SP and Maya use this in their speeches to majority minority he'll have to atone!
Because Mulayam , Amar and Maya will say that Rahul has turned away!!!
He's no longer pro the majority minority they will say!!!
And believe me in rural India this stupidity will be lapped up!!!
And there is no way Rahul can make these dolts shut up!!!
Confucius says….. so Rahul Baba show your mettle!!!!
Speak up for what is good for the Country and don't bother who your stand will nettle!!!
Adds..... and this stand will stand you in good stead five years down the line!!!!
When you will be aspiring that as India's PM letters you sign!!!

A welcome suggestion!
The suggestions of the ARC on removing those babus not found worth their salt is most welcome. Now what the Government should do is fix a minimum number every year to be cashiered compulsorily in all ranks in each service to ensure equality (so that a situation does not arise where the IAS starts reviewing every other service and retiring them, while remaining in service themselves or merely retiring IAS promotees). Further, since the promotions of the IAS are faster and they enjoy a two year edge over every other (civil) servant, their reviews and compulsory retirements also should begin at 18 years and for others it should be 20 as suggested by the ARC.

Timely wake up call
I would like to congratulate you for bringing a very incisive discussion on the functioning of intelligence agencies in your issue on 11th December .This wake up call is timely and necessary to revamp the very functioning of these agencies . It only shows how much frustrated are the police officers working in the field and their grievances deserve serious consideration and redressal .

Can't we book Kasab and all such terrorists under MCOCOA / similar Act?
* We have bodies of the 9 terrorists killed in Mumbai plus a live terrorist. It is possible to carry out DNA tests on each one of them and ask Pakistan to match the same with the kin of these persons in that country. Or, the same can be entrusted to an independent International Organisation like the UNO! That kind of evidence would nail Pakistan's diversionary tactics besides providing solid evidence of that country's complicity in spreading terrorism across the world.
* Don't we all know that Saudi Nationals contribute hugely to fundamentalist Islamic Institutions in India, Pakistan and other countries? It's time to be overt in our analysis of such linkages. The Saudis should be prevailed upon by the UNO / USA to stop out flow of Saudi funds to Terror networks across the world.

Whither sartorial elegance!
All civil servants look equally well-dressed till they maintain their self-esteem in offices. Their sartorial elegance vanishes, the moment, they bow or start crawling before their political Masters!
A K Saxena (A retired civil servant)
I would like to propose the name of JS Mukul presently Joint Secretary in the Technical Cooperation Division of Ministry of External Affairs as the best dressed bureaucrat. I saw him in Riyadh when he was posted there as Deputy Chief of Mission
Whither U.P.?
Speculation about U.P. is timely, for it is one State that sets the trend in democratic polity in the country. When it goes down, it takes the greater part of the country too with it. Let us ponder- what leadership has been given to UP by the Congress in the past 3 decades? Do you treat a state like UP so casually as to leave it to whosoever wants to plunder it? Is it not somewhat surprising that the forces loudest in claiming themselves more secular than others have not even feigned to propose the name of a member of the minority community for the post of Chief Minister of UP? It is not that there is no competent person of high or very high caliber available for the job. It is rather the psyche of their delusions of being someone capable of "doing this or that/reserving so much or more for the minorities". In so far as the Congress is concerned, it must wake up now and promote responsible leadership, not only in UP but also in other states too, if it wants to play the leading role in national politics.
Congress can and must win back states like UP. Can Rahul Gandhi accept the political challenge of giving good government to UP by offering to take up the post of Chief Minister of UP and gain first hand experience of political & administrative calamities inflicted for decades on leading states like UP?I am sure the flow of information to him or the Congress party is absolutely doctored, resulting in malgovernance and consequential disaffection of the people at large. A battle won here or another lost there means nothing. India has sad experiences of democracy as exposed by several incidents, the latest being Bombay (Mumbai).Had we developed and established good governments in the states and the centre, nobody would have dared to act funny with us. Even now it is not too late, but it certainly would be if we let go of it any more!

Why mid year transfers in CBDT ?
Why is the CBDT indulging in mid year transfers and postings of very senior officers at the same stations? Is it due to whims and fancies ruling the roost?

Rahul Dravid has become an enigma
Rahul Dravid has become an enigma wrapped in a riddle. Seeing his poor form and poor string of scores, it may be high time for the wall to retire. After all Ganguly had to go while he was still performing, and Kumble followed suit when he was not performing. Why should the wall linger. The "lingering wall" might as well abate.

Unnecessary hue and cry over CCL
People are raising hue and cry over CCL whereas there are bigger issues like granting of increased increments to the IAS to maintain their advantageous position over other services. It is surprising to see a lot of women raising an objection about the grant of CCL to other members of the same gender. It would be better if they raised their voice against the various other disparities and anomalies which warrant the same. Looking at the objections raised by men and more so by women, is it not clearly perceptible why the Women's Bill remains a distant dream?

CCL - broad-minded V/s narrow-minded
Lack of clarity in the minds of officials handling the subject has brought this in the forefront. The Government, headed by liberal Prime Minister, has been trying his best to keep pace with the time. The officials of SPC also read his mind well and all the recommendations made accordingly. Grant of CCL was one of them.
While initially everybody appreciated the recommendations of SPC, soon hue and cry is being raised against recommendations meant for selected ones, without going into the real intention behind those recommendations. I consider grant of CCL a very bold decision and one, that is in national interest. Everybody wants to finish the terrorists, goondas, thieves and other anti-social elements. There are very few who think about preventive measures. It is my humble request to those who demand death to terrorists to peak into their childhood days and then say the same thing. In more than 90% cases, the reason for these children adopting anti-social activities, is lack of nil or inadequate attention by parents, esp. by mother. Few wise officials observed this and by granting CCL tried to ensure that at least children of government servants are not bereft of parental care. The protest by few on this site shows that they do not want such favour to these children. In other words, they feel by granting CCL, children of government servants (cent percent), would contribute to country's cause and they would be unable to find children of this class to be lured into anti-social activities.
Therefore, I humbly request government to grant unconditional CCL to female employees. After all, how many such female employees are there left in government within children below 18 years of age? I don't think more than 2% would be left and if granting leave to these 2% blocks the work of the Government (as have been noted by few on this site), then what are 98% officials doing. There is also need to train officials in the DOPT about the trends in liberal societies and not get influenced by mere protests of a few. Time today calls for grant of CCL unconditionally in national interest.

Why is the BJP so taken aback ?
Why is the BJP so taken aback by its defeat in Delhi and Rajasthan? It had three states where it faced anti incumbency- Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh. Out of these three states, it has won two with decent margins, largely due to good administration and development (in that order, people have voted more for good administration followed by development). The only state it has lost among these three major states is Rajasthan- attributable to the hubris of Vasundhara Raje and factionalism but one must also note that Gehlot had lost last time despite being a good administrator, so this time the people have given Gehlot a chance. The same factors have worked in Delhi, Dixit has been working hard and given a good administration. Added to that is Dixit's good PR and charisma, quite in contrast to the evident lack of charisma and energy in Malhotra. So, all said and done, the BJP has not done badly at all. The Congress too has done well, and the honours are even till now. It will be interesting to see what happens to the Parliamentary polls. What is most heart warming is that the agenda in politics, thus far hijacked by the lumpen element and the votaries of the divisive politics of caste, religion and region for their own narrow/ selfish ends seems to be shifting to law and order/ governance and development, which is a welcome trend for all right thinking people.
