FORUM

Sir, Flourishing kidney racket whose full ramifications are yet to unfold is a fine indicator of success of National Rural employment Guarantee Scheme. Instead of getting 200 days of assured employment in rural areas ,poor people are forced to migrate and earn few thousand of rupees at the cost of loosing their kidney. The confidence with which Dr Amit ran this racket with links all over the country and abroad and accessed facilities of well known hospitals and labs in Delhi is further indication of total lack of any system being in place to deter likes of Dr Amit. Of course Dr Ramdoss was extremely busy fighting Dr Venugopal of AIIMS that he had no time to see what else was happening in the health sector. While our leaders are boasting about world class health facilities in India and tremendous scope for medical tourism, we should hang our head in shame that all such things can continue at such a huge scale for such a long time without any problem. This racket came to light because of initiative of a gutsy lady IPS probationer (who appears to be a very good replacement following VRS by Kiran Bedi) and not because of alertness on the part of medical fraternity or Health Ministry. No wonder, at some stage a policy of go slow may be followed on the ground that strong position of rupee vis a vis dollor is due to combined contribution of all such rackets. A very powerful minister has gone on record saying that scary pictorial warnings on cigarette packs can negatively impact upon earnings of beedi workers. One can only hope that same justification will not be given in support of flourishing kidney racket.
