What edge is Lahiri talking about ?
What edge is P K Lahiri talking about? The two additional increments the IAS and the Indian Foreign Service enjoyed over batch mates of IPS/IRS/IAAS/IRTS etc? If he takes a look at the 4th Pay Commission Report, he will know that it was agreed that the "edge" would dissipate over time, since post 1979, there was no rationale to continue with this oxymoron. That is why all services are equal in the Junior Time Scale which does not have it any more after the 4th Pay Commission. The fact is that the 6th Pay Commission and the revision of pay rules of the IAS to the detriment of all Services seeking to create a gap of at least 6 years in pay is totally iniquitous and unacceptable. What they want is to make all others into Class II services (6 years gap is what the Class II Services should have with the IAS, as per the Rules). Let Lahiri not dwell on the ICS (the ICS never liked the IAS anyway, till the last man retired, the ICS preferred their Central Service colleagues over the "upstarts" from the PCS who comprised the IAS at initial constitution). Misinformation is the name of the game indulged in by the IAS.

I have seen and read IPS and CPMF rivalry. This is all musing of officersand has nothing to do with capacity building or spcialisation. everyone in government service has a charter to perform. If he feels that some injustice is being done to his service he has right to put his views before government. Does all officers of IPS and CPMF can claim by putting their hand on heart that they are genuinely fighting for betterment of constabulary who are backbone of force.If not then do it and if yes then I am sorry to say that they are not taking this issue inright direction. CBI should screen IRS Customs and Income Tax

The transfer Policy for the IRS(Customs) and IRS(Income Tax) should have a supplement. All IRS officers of both services should be screened by the CBI for possessing disproportionate assets if they have completed their tenure at Mumbai and Delhi. All IPS officers should be screened for disproportionate assets if they complete five years of posting as District Police chiefs. If they agree to these conditions, their case for pay parity with the IAS can be examined. Otherwise, they should not even think of parity with the IAS which is a superior service.

I entirely empathise with Anurag Srivastava for having suffered due to the artificial discrimination created by the successive governments at the Centre by playing one service against another and encouraging monopolistic tendencies within bureacracy.This policy of 'divide and rule ' is not only unethical but also detrimental to public interests. Different criteria are being followed for different organised services without any rationale. The worst casualty is the CSS .Several CSS officers numbering about 5 to 6 retired without due promotions despite having outstanding track records and with more than ten years service as Joint Secretaries in the GOI! Is this the way to manage a cadre! Is there not a need to have a more transparent and even handed approach by DOPT that administers the RTI Act. This is an instance of "chiraag talay andhera".Dr suresh Mehrotra is known for championing the cause of the downtrodden.May I seek his intervention?

High production and productivity, market-driven product mix, substantially higher value-added/special steel production, several initiatives towards cost reduction, along with strong demand for steel enabled Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to achieve new financial and physical performance landmarks during the year 2007-08. The company's audited financial results for FY '08 were taken on record by the SAIL Board of Directors in Delhi on May 16,2008.SAIL's Chairman S.K.Roongta chaired the meeting.With a growth of 35% over the corresponding period of the previous year (CPPY), the record turnover of Rs. 15,530 crore achieved in Q4 of FY '08 helped SAIL's annual turnover to reach an all-time high level of Rs. 45,555 crore - an increase of 16.2% over 2006-07. During Q4 of 2007-08, the company also achieved highest-ever quarterly profit before tax (PBT) of Rs. 3,665 crore - 25% higher than CPPY.During 2007-08, SAIL's PBT at Rs. 11,469 crore as well as profit after tax (PAT) at Rs. 7,537 crore were all-time high - showing an increase of 21.7% and 21.5%, respectively.
The SAIL Board has recommended its highest-ever dividend at 37% on paid-up equity amounting to over Rs. 1,500 crore for the company's shareholders for the year 2007-08. This includes the 19% interim dividend paid in February 2008. Previous highest dividend payout was 33% for the year 2004-05.SAIL recorded highest-ever saleable steel production of 3.5 million tonnes (6% growth) during January-March 2008, taking annual production to a new peak of 13 million tonnes during FY '08 with a capacity utilisation of 118%. The company continued with its strategy of utilising the available potential of existing units and optimising production of special quality/value-added products, production of which went up to 3.5 million tonnes - up by 30% over 2006-07. Over 30 new products were developed for special applications during the year, including high corrosion/earthquake resistant TMT rebars for construction, high tensile plates for hydel power projects and high yield strength (SAILMA 550 HI) plates, SUP-11A/9 grade spring steel for auto sector, environment-friendly C-5 coated CRNO sheets,
armour steel plates for the defence sector, boron-treated aluminium-killed low carbon steel, vanadium micro-alloyed rails for application in tracks for higher axle load at high speed, low carbon HR coils with titanium for extra deep drawing, etc.There was a total reduction of 4,169 employees in the company's workforce during 2007-08, after accounting for fresh recruitment of 2,656 to improve skill and age mix, bringing down SAIL's manpower further to a level of 128,804 as on 31st March 2008.Commenting on the company's performance, S.K. Roongta, Chairman, SAIL, said: "SAIL has proved its fundamental strengths once again, the most significant of which is its committed workforce - ever eager to attain new peaks in performance and to meet the growing demand for steel in the country

"IT needs of the power transmission sector are being well taken care of by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID)," commented Infosys Technologies co-chairman Nandan Nilekani during his visit to POWERGRID's Northern Region Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC) on May 15, 2008 along with Union Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh. Nilekani, who heads a task force mandated to find ways of effectively using IT in the power sector, visited NRLDC to gain first-hand knowledge of POWERGRID's adoption of IT in the management of its transmission lines and grid management.During the visit POWERGRID officials apprised Nilekani on "Smart Grid" being implemented to tackle the complexities of grid operation and to expedite bulk transfer of power in an efficient manner. The Smart Grid integrated with IT shall incorporate remedial actions like adaptive islanding, self healing etc. which shall inculcate much desired intelligence into power system. The embedded IT features in POWERGRID's transmission network helps in supporting spot power market through "Unscheduled Exchanges (UI)", a unique concept adopted in Indian power sector and appreciated worldwide for its effectiveness. While appreciating the initiatives undertaken by POWERGRID to infuse IT in transmission,Nilekani stressed on the need to focus towards development of Smart distribution systems including billing, metering and enhancement of consumer facilities to get quality power supply.
