S. S. N. Moorthy assumes charge as Chairman,CBDT
S. S. N. Moorthy took over as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes on retirement of N. B. Singh on January 31,2009. Moorthy belongs to 1973 batch of the Indian Revenue Service(IRS). Before joining the CBDT as Member in August 2008, he was Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) in Mumbai for over two years. Earlier he served in various capacities in the Income Tax department in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra; and also had a stint as Member of the Kerala Sales Tax Appellate Tribunal. Hailing from the state of Kerala, he holds a Masters degree in English, a degree in Law and keenly follows Karnatic classical music.

Sanmar Group bags SAIL's Golden Jubilee BMQB Trophy
A team from Sanmar Group, Chennai has won Steel Authority of India Ltd's Golden Jubilee Business & Management Quiz Bonanza (BMQB) Trophy. SAIL Chairman SK Roongta presented the trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh to the Sanmar team at the finals of the mega quiz event held at Habitat Centre in New Delhi on January 29,2009. The runners-up team from Sun Microsystems won Rs. 50,000 and a trophy. Around 100 teams from top corporate houses and management schools across the country participated in the mega quiz event organized by SAIL as part of its ongoing celebrations to mark the golden jubilee of production by its plants, with the wider aim of encouraging business and management professionals and students to enrich their knowledge base. Marathon quiz contests were organized in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and New Delhi during the past fortnight and the top two teams from each region battled it out in the national finals that saw gruelling rounds of intense quizzing and a nerve-racking tie-breaker. All the regional winners got attractive cash prizes and trophies and participants of the audience rounds were rewarded not only for the right answers but also for their creativity. Roongta congratulated the winners and thanked the participants for being part of SAIL's golden jubilee celebrations. He announced that SAIL BMQS will be an annual feature henceforth. SAIL Director (Personnel) Mr G. Ojha, in his address, appreciated the institutionalisation of the quizzing culture in SAIL.
Earlier in the day, teams from SAIL's own plants and units battled it out in the company's annual internal quiz competition, Saksham, for the SAIL Director (Personnel)'s Cup at the same venue. The event was won by the team from Central Marketing Organisation of SAIL which narrowly pipped the previous year's champions, Bhilai Steel Plant, to the post.

Urgent action required
Molestation of girls visiting pub in Mangalore by Shri Ram Sene goons immediately brings to mind Talibani firmans being issued in Swat valley of Pakistan. Shri Ram Sene goons being of somewhat liberal variety (compared to their Talibani counterparts) have so far not bombed or totally destroyed any pub in Mangalore or killed pub visitor. May be they want to step up their "cultural activities" in an incremental manner as a matter of strategy. Chief Minister of Karnataka has while feebly critising shameful incident in Mangalore and promising law and order has expressed his opposition to "Pub Culture" in the same breath. Those who want to protect Indian "culture " by such like methods need to be concerned more with already declining sex ratio and practice of female foeticide (to save girls from unwholesome male attention). Molesting girls in the name of protecting Indian culture is indicative of deep moral depravity and degeneration. Urgent multi pronged effective action (not limited to arrest and bail) is required to prevent Talibanisation of Indian society.
