An Imaginary Interview

SONIA GANDHI

I had requested for an appointment to interview Sonia. Whenever I contacted her Office her staff just played a tape recording of Sonia saying in Hintalian (like Hinglish), " Aap kataar mein hai kripa prateeksha karre." One day out of the blue I got a letter saying that I had been granted an appointment. The letter explicitly listed the do's and don'ts. I reached 10 Janpath and after going through the security drill I was ushered into a room that looked like a library. Ahmed Patel came in and frisked me once more and ordered me to sit in a chair. Sonia came in and did a namaste and sat down.

Sonia : So you are Bharat Kumar….. after you finish interviewing me I have a few questions for you!
Me: Madam, why did you forsake the PM's post?
Sonia: Well as we sat discussing things the Stock Market starting plummeting. As Congress had been out of power many Congressmen had invested heavily in the Stock Market and I could see the panic. I did not want Congressmen to go bankrupt and so decided there and then itself to do tyaag for my loyal Congressmen. Just for your info two senior Congressmen had even passed out and had to be revived….we lied to them that Markets hade rebounded!!!

Me. How did you make your choice of PM?
Sonia: Well I had an Agency advise me on this. They formulated a test based on inputs of my requirements. A meeting room was totally put under surveillance cameras. I chaired a meeting in this room and all propsective candidates attended this meeting. As planned I excused myself midway in the meeting. All except Manmohan Singh were seen in the camera glare eyeing my empty chair. Then all the candidates were put through lie detector tests. Manmohan came out with flying colors. Imagine one candidate failed the lie detector when he gave his name!!!!

Me: Has Manmohan done a good job….how do you rate his performance ?
Sonia: I hope you do not expect me to give you a mathematical answer? I was never good at Maths. Manmohan Ji administratively has done a good job. I have still not exposed him politically and hence no need to rate him in this area.
Me: Anything negative ??
Sonia: Well he walks too fast and it is difficult to keep up with him.

Me: Madam are the Commies a bit too demanding?
Sonia: Yes and no. You see they do demand but we have found a way out. Before the meeting Manmmohan Ji and me put earplugs in our ears and then during the meeting we just smile and nod our heads. But do not print this……print that Commies propose and we dispose!!!!

Me: Madam don't you feel Laloo is giving Congress and UPA a bad name?
Sonia: Arithmetic……that is all I am going to say!!!
Me: What…….but you said you are bad in Arithmetic!
Sonia: I feel when an arithmetic problem is put to me in a political way I can solve it in a jiffy. Like I know the power equation, I know the common denominator of UPA……and I am working on equations which can add up to power without a pesky ally!!!
Me: Must be the Commies ....they are the ones who are tipped to pull the plug!!!
Sonia: Would you like some tea???
Me: Madam Tea would be fine…….Madam you've not answered my question!!!
Sonia: Have you received the booklet we released on UPA's first Birthday?
Me: Madam my question……!!!!!
Sonia: I think I have answered this question!!

Me: Speaking of the birthday celebrations…..who got the birthday bumps….you or Manmohan!!!
Sonia: With the Commies playing hooky I think both Manmohan Ji and I got goose bumps!!

Me: Madam you have said that you have forsaken PM's post and so no question of you considering this now……Madam this now is now being questioned!!!
Sonia: Not now!!!
Me: Your answer or you do not want to become PM now???
Sonia: Both…..I'll show you the predicting Cow Laloo has gifted me …..we'll question the cow for the answer to this question!!!

A servant brought in tea in kullads. I looked at Sonia questioningly .

Sonia: Laloo Ji says this makes me look more Indian. But frankly coffee tastes yuck in kullads. That is why in Public I do not drink Coffee!!!
Me: Madam is there anything you miss from your Italian past???
Sonia: Mama Mia……..well I miss my miss days!!!! Carefree days …… and yes I do have craving for Italian food off and on.
Me: You must be sometimes getting sick of all the sycophancy that surrounds you….how do you get away from it????
Sonia: You might laugh….but like Uma I run to the hills to some secluded spot!!!
Me: With or without the SPG???
Sonia (after taking a deep breath): Now these people are like family…..extremely paranoid ……in fact I've renamed them as Sonia's Paranoid Guards!!!

Me: What about this talk of a Kitchen Cabinet….your cutlery????
Sonia: You've heard the joke……one day my Mom in Law gave a call to Zail Singh informing him that she was planning to change her cabinet. Lo and behold in the evening Giani Ji visited her with carpenter's tools and asked her where she would like the cabinet be made (laughs heartily).
Me: Madam but you've not answered my question???

Just then there is the sound of cutlery falling to the floor and a loud thud.

Sonia : (calling out aloud) What fell down???
Ahmed Patel enters in a dishelved state and says: Madam Satish Sharma Ji was going to the fridge to take some ice cream and he tripped and fell down in the kitchen…….Ambika , Jairam , Diwedi and me…we picked him up.

Sonia: Enough……now Mr. Kumar I have a few questions for you. Tell me why do you write against me???
Me: Madam I do not write against you…you are in power and so you are in the limelight!!!
Sonia: Tell me ….do you still feel I am a foreigner???
Me: Madam that is for you to judge yourself……as long as your heart beats faster and you get goose bumps when the Italian National Anthem is played you cannot call yourself an Indian. But, yes you are an ideal Indian wife and mother…..no Indian husband could have asked for a more Indian wife!!!
Sonia: Why do you pen your column in verse???
Me: Madam the issue is raised in the brain, processed in the heart and flows out in verse!!

Sonia looks at her watch and bids me adieu. Outside I am mobbed by Ambika, Jairam, Diwedi, Patel and Sharma, who has a bandage on his head. They all start questioning me as to what Madam said…..if she had mentioned them??? Before the meeting I was frisked bodily and now I am frisked mentally.

As I walk out Amar Singh accosts me and questions me as to who I am and why and how did I go inside. I give Amar the required details. As I walk I hear Amar Singh talking into his cell phone " Arre Badhe Bhai 10 Janpath ko enter karne ka rasthaaa mill gaya…..we are now Sahara Reporters…..now we will be invited to all the Parties"!!!
