SAILs profit after tax up by 40 per cent
Recently anointed a Maharatna company by the Government of India, Steel
Authority of India Limited (SAIL) took on record its audited financial
performance for January-March (Q4) of FY 10 in Delhi on May 28,
2010, showing profit after tax (PAT) of Rs. 2,085 crore, with a year-on-year
improvement of 40%. The company achieved net sales turnover of Rs. 11,955
crore during the quarter, as against Rs. 11,790 crore in the corresponding
period last year (CPLY). SAILs Q4 profit before tax (PBT) at Rs.
3,067 crore reflected 34% y-o-y growth. The companys improved
profitability in Q4 was mainly due to market-oriented product-mix, 37%
increase in production of value-added steels and several cost efficiency
measures. Improved sales realisation during the quarter and reduction
in cost of some inputs like imported coking coal and ferro-alloys also
boosted the bottomline. Progressive improvement in profitability in
every successive quarter of FY 10 helped SAIL to achieve PBT of
Rs. 10,132 crore during the year, higher by 8% its second highest
profit since inception. PAT for the whole financial year has been higher
by 9.5% at Rs. 6,754 crore. In spite of sales growth of 7% during FY
10 in volume terms at 12.11 million tonnes, of which one-third
constituted value-added items, net turnover at Rs. 40,551 crore was
lower by about 6% as compared to the previous year, primarily on account
of lower net sales realisations, especially in the first half. The SAIL
Board has recommended final dividend payment to company shareholders
at 17% of paid-up equity, with total dividend payout (including interim
dividend of 16%) for the year 2009-10 at 33% amounting to Rs. 1,363
crore. SAIL Chairman S.K. Roongta commented that conferring of Maharatna
status by the Government and on the global front, too, SAIL getting
a prominent position having been ranked at No. 2 in the World-Class
Steel Makers Ranking by World Steel Dynamics, USA
demonstrate the basic strengths of SAIL and have been possible due to
the SAIL collective always converting challenges into opportunities.

Epitome of Virtue'
This refers to 'Epitome of Virtue' in the Forum on 26th May. There have
been similar eulogies in the past written by some other officers, mostly
about their seniors. Such comments smack of chamchagiri. If we want
to save the backbone of bureaucracy, we need to seriously think of two
major steps: First, no extension; Second, no post-retirement employment.
Supreme Court, in order to ensure the independence of some important
senior functionaries, decided in favour of a fixed tenure of 2 years
for these positions. It is everyone's knowledge whether the incumbents
have been able to sustain the undue political pressure. Apart from individual's
own personality, one very important reason is the lolly-pop of extensions
and post-retirement benefits dangling before them.
We all know that extension is not given for good work alone. Please
stop such tall claims. We also know of many good, hard-working
and honest officers who have now quit the Government. As a rule, those
quitting the Government are generally the ones who are the better of
the lot. If the Government is so keen to retain 'good' officers, why
could it not do anything to retain them rather than extending the tenures
or re-employing them?

Unhealthy officers must be compulsorily retired
There are many senior officers in the IAS, IPS, IFS and IRS above the
age of 55 who are known to be unhealthy. Pot bellied DGPs suffering
from heart problems can not lead the forces nor can officers who can
barely see or walk lead state governments as Secretaries. These officers
must be compulsorily retired. The senior officers above 55 of these
top services should be screened for health and in cases where working
efficiency is suspect, they should not be retained in service. The extant
rules for compulsory retirement for officers over 55 can be invoked
with good results for the administration.

Babasaheb Ambedkar himself wanted reservations for 10 years
The fact is that Babasaheb Ambedkar himself wanted reservations only
for 10 years. When the Sikhs went to Sardar Patel for reservations in
civil posts on the basis of population, Sardar Patel said they could
get it only thing was they would have to agree to the same in armed
forces and police, upon which the Sikhs promptly retreated (since they
have numbers far exceeding their proportion of population in the armed
forces and police). The fact is, this kind of a thing, which the British
deliberately started to divide the country, when given, is such a huge
undeserved benefit that people getting it will start manufacturing reasons
to perpetuate it- "oppression for centuries", "open reservation
for general category", "only a small fraction i.e. 22.5% seats
are reserved", "socially and educationally backward",
"Brahminical oppression", "Aryan policies", "constitutional
provisions", "right of the underprivileged", "marriage
on caste basis, why not jobs" and all that. The facts are that
over centuries, education was not at a premium (Akbar the Great was
unlettered so was Maharaja Ranjit Singh, but they were trained in warfare),
There was no education till modern education which came with the British.
Pre British India was ruled by Muslim rulers for a thousand years and
Sanskrit has been a dead language for over a thousand years. Even if
the Brahmins did not let anyone learn Sanskrit at some time in history
thousands of years ago out of ignorance, superstition or devilry, Sanskrit
itself lost relevance a thousand years ago. The courts of Muslim India,
the administration, the army all were more open to the Turk, the Persian,
the central Asian, the Muslim than to any Hindu. Jiziya was imposed
on all Hindus, including Brahmins and Dalits. How have the Brahmins
oppressed others for the past thousand years when the rulers were not
Brahmins and not even Hindu? Even if that is so, and Brahmins oppressed
others, should that be held against Brahmins today? Posts in administration
were reserved not for so called "upper castes" but Muslims
for a thousand years since the Muslims ruled India prior to the British
and for the British for 200 years since they ruled India for two hundred
years before independence. For a thousand years, how have there been
"reservations for the general category" Hindus called "upper
castes". It is only that with the advent of modern English education,
some communities took to English education (and were treated as outcastes
from their communities). For this, they are sought to be kept out today
by artificially creating categories like "OBC" which never
existed in India. Castes existed in pre independence India, not categories.
Even here, "OBCs" are caste Hindus, "Sawarn"- the
Bhumihars, Yadavs, Kayasths, Kurmis are all Shudras and all Sawarn.
Only the Dalits were "Sawarn" and outcaste (till untouchability
was outlawed in independent India, due not only to Ambedkar but also
due to Nehru, Patel, Prasad, Maulana Azad who were all so called "upper
caste" and reformers). The myth the so called "OBCs"
are trying to create is that they are on a par with the Dalits. This
is all a historical and only in order to garner the same benefits as
the Dalits viz. reservations! Equality, liberty and fraternity are modern
values given to ourselves by all of us in 1950, including by the Brahmins,
after two centuries of social reform. Indian society has been reformed
over 200 years and since 1950, all are equal (prior to independence,
the Europeans ruled over all of us, who were equally second class and
oppressed by the foreign power). Why should reservations continue today,
then? Each day new categories are formed, new claimants to backwardness
come up with new reasons. Would we stop Muslims from competing for jobs
and education since for a thousand years their ancestors ruled India
and there were historical atrocities on the Hindu majority by the Muslims-
rape, loot, persecution, razing temples, forcible conversions, Jiziya?
Certainly not. They are equally citizens of this country. So are the
upper castes. Why should they be kept out of jobs and education by citing
historical facts/ fiction and creating artificial majorities ("Bahujan",
"OBC", "Dalit, Minority", OBC", "Muslim,
Yadav", "Backward, SC,ST, Muslim"). Have the so called
"OBCs" sacrificed more in the freedom struggle than the so
called "upper castes"? as an example, Ambedkar (though not
"OBC", he was a Dalit) was never jailed by the British; Nehru,
Patel, Gandhi, Maulana Azad spent their lives in jail. Lala Lajpat Rai,
Bhagat Singh, Ashfaqullah, Chandrashekhar Azad sacrificed their lives
during the freedom struggle (all so called upper caste). In case population
is sought to be made the criterion for jobs, again, we should go on
"caste" and not "category". Historically, there
were no "categories" in India, only "caste". Any
census, should also be on the basis of "caste" and not artificially
created "category". Why should 7% Yadavs hog 54% jobs on behalf
of OBCs. Why should Meenas hog all ST seats in India though having 0.001%
of India's population and Dusadhs hog all 14% of seats in the name of
SCs though having 0.5% of India's population. And why should Brahmins
have 0% when they are 5% of India's population. Let all castes and sub-castes
be enumerated and jobs be divided in proportion to populatin caste wise,
not category wise. Let all castes have jobs and education in proportion
to their population after a caste census, not artificial "category"
as suggested by the three Yadav musketeers.

Casteism persists
An extraordinarily brilliant young man who got 96% in CBSC and bagged
an international scholarship and completed his engineering degree with
first class hons. from one of the top American university and then did
his MBA from Harvard business school and joined a very lucrative job
in one of the Americas top company had an affair with an Indian
girl a software engineer in an Indian company and posted in USA. The
girl's parents were very happy to see the boy introduced by their daughter.
The boy was not only highly qualified and highly placed, he was also
very fair, handsome and smart. Later when she told about marriage the
parents strongly objected as they were told that the boy was scheduled
caste. The parents of the girl were both class one officers, both M.A,
from Delhi University. This is the level of casteism practiced in this
country. Let no body talk against job reservation on caste basis. In
there should be a caste based census and all the jobs be reserved among
all the castes according to their population percentages.

Don't underestimate MMS !
Since the PM's press conference, a lot of "analysis" is being
done with some people reading one thing in the utterances and the others
reading something totally different. People have erred earlier in underestimating
the political power of Dr Man Mohan Singh, the Prime Minister Of India.
He is a thinker, planner, executioner and achiever. His methods of politics
are "unconventional". He is a man of unlimited patience--remember
his famous statement "I do not lose my sleep because of the sensex"!
His patience with abnormal(rather historic) price rise, spectrum business,
management of food supplies, IPL or aviation industry(he allowed the
buck to stop at his table!), are all but beautiful evidences of his
great political acumen. So those who underestimated him in UPA-I must
know how smoothly he has steered the coalition. It might not be to the
liking of some, but a politician can not survives if he bothered for
only those "some" rather than the sum of all kinds of somes.
On this scale, he proved to be a smoother sailor than PVNR or ABV. Similarly,
his press conference should not be lightly dismissed. He has let the
civil society (they are the only vocal elements, ready with their analysis
on most matters concerning the aam aadmi, who listens carefully to his
leaders only once in five years!) have a brief peep into The Politician
Manmohan Singh, given a carefully selective exposure of his personality,
determination, resolve and political agenda to the media and above all
to all varieties of politicians in and outside the Congress. Make no
mistakes. Don't get sucked by his mild demeanor. In a nutshell, it means
that there is no vacancy at 7 RCR and hence politicians should not fall
for attractive offers from the To-Let Services !!!

What is so great about our Constitution?
The Constitution of India was a rehash of the Government of India Act
of 1935.It did not need a genius to do what was essentially, a scissor
and paste job. It is the longest written Constitution in the world and
also the most boring Constitution in the world. In spirit, it established
the primacy of former British India over the Princely States. For personal
reasons Nehru hated the Princely States and worked towards their extinction.
He knew ,as a wily politician that the Princes were loved by the public
whereas the Congress Ministers were hated by the public. Yes, there
were Congress Ministers even in British India under the GOI Act of 1935.
Since 1947 the Congress has carried out a relentless defamation campaign
against the Princes in order to displace them politically. Princely
India preserved Indian culture whether it be classical music ,painting
or architecture. They also prohibited the wanton destruction of wild
life and forests. The maximum destruction of culture and wild life was
in British India and the present Republic is only an amplification of
British India. We should ask ourselves if the extinction of these kingdoms
was a good idea at all? And why not revive them again? The tribal insurgency
in Central India was unheard of when the Maharajahs ruled. Manipur under
its Maharajah was peaceful for 200 years. So what is so great about
our silly Constitution?

Nobody is belittling Babasahib
Dear friends, nobody is belittling Babasahib. He indeed was a genius.
But he didn't belong to backward classes only. He belonged to entire
India. {You don't have to act as advocate for him.} That's why he was
conferred upon prestigious Bharat Ratan. But on this count you can't
throw other great sons of the motherland into dustbin. You must acknowledge
their contribution too... I know, some pro reservation people in offices
are hell bent upon creating sectarian attitude in offices. Their ill
will and hate for other classes (upper classes)is clearly manifested
here. For god's sake, don't spread hatred in offices. I doubt how you
will survive with so much hatred and anger in your mind. May God bless
you and I am sure, one day better sense will prevail. Thanks.
