What people say
about us !
Aaj Ki Aawaz Once again Mumbai is 'bombed'! Once again some Mumbaikars die and quite a few are injured! Once again there are cries that there is a lack of security in Mumbai! Once again rather than unifying in such a time our Netas play blame games and indulge in drama baazi! Once again some try to gain brownie points! Once again Mumbaikars take the bombings in their stride and Mumbai is 'ticking' the next day!
I was in Mumbai on a business trip and on the day of the blasts and was in Opera House about 5 hours prior to the blasts. As usual Opera House was alive and right from the sweeper to the businessman all moved about with Mumbai's philosophy ' don't waste time khaali phokat'!!! I was tempted to go to Khau Gali to have a Gujarati Cup of tea....strong and extra sweet..... but decided against doing so as I had to reach Nariman Point for an appointment.
In the evening as I sat and sipped my coffee I heard the news about the blasts. At first it seemed the blasts were low intensity blasts and that there had been minimal damage. But then the reports on the 'dead and injured' started filtering in!
First a selfish 'thank you God' escaped my lips. I was in Opera House in the afternoon and in fact I had planned to go there in the evening initially but went there earlier as I had time to spare as an appointment got cancelled, as I wanted to return home early as the weather looked ominous.
Mumbaikars do not make a public spectacle of their grief. Mumbaikars putting themselves at risk to help out fellow Mumbaikars is customary. And Mumbai going about business as usual is also unique to Mumbai!
I was appalled at the statements of Rahul and Digvijay Singh. Rahul 'only 1% terror thrusts get through' was stupid..... but by now we are used to his stupidity! Because the perception is majority of the terror plans do get through and only a minority are blocked! I heard one Mumbaikar lament 'hope the next 1% seeping in affect Congress Leaders'!!! Digvijay tried to equate the loss of life in the blasts to comparing fuel and food prices between India and Pakistan! And now he's trying to give the blasts a saffron colour!
Sorry to say this but Mumbaikars 'chalta hai' attitude is causing them great harm! In my opinion the only way Mumbai can enforce security is if Mumbaikars become super vigilant! Be it the trains..... buses........the streets....... any public place..... see anything and they need to forgo their 'chalta hai' attitude and report it to the authorities! In fact Mumbaikars should 'take security in their own hands' by being extra vigilant! Mumbai needs to go the London way and put surveillance cameras everywhere.
It is an intelligence failure.... and Mohna saying 'we had no inputs' confirms this! PC was too busy with non Home Ministry matters...... Lokpal Bill....... Black Money case in SC.......... and his own haymaking and politicking!! Remember the priorities of the HM filter down and I have already mentioned his priorities! Prithviraj Chauhan tried to show he was on the job by saying he was monitoring the situation from his Office.... and PC tried to show he's on the job by flying down to Mumbia and staying overnight and vamoosing!!! Had they spent time like they did post the bombings prior to the bombings maybe these bombing would not have taken place!
On TV next day I saw Barkah Dutt drenched in the rain at Opera House! She could have stood under the umbrella or even worn a Raincoat..... but then this was her make-up for this 'show'......... all for TRP and personal glorification! For her like Rahul catastrophes, tragedies etc., are 'brownie points gaining time'!!
My request to Mumbaikars is do not expect the Government to protect you. Corrupt and power besotted Netas, unconcerned and 'lakeer ke faqeer' Officials and 'hafta' besotted Cops cannot and will not help you!!! Wherever you see lapses in the Security make a hue and cry! In fact form a 'Safe Mumbai' vigilant group .... put pressure directly and via the Media...... Media's used you guys now use the Media!!
Even God helps those who help themselves!
PS....the VIP treatment to Kasab is sending the wrong message. We
need to do to Kasab what Americans did at Gitmo. Same goes for Afzal
Guru! India should have a special jail for terror undertrials and accused!!
Mohna says India needs a second Green Revolution.... what we really
need is a second Independence.... from GM (General Manager) PMs, from
High Commands, from Yuvrajs, from a Opposition which is riddled with
infighting rather than fighting the Government on its follies and corruption
and from a corrupt system!!!! Bharat Kumar UPA govt to face a rough weather in the Parliament Will Rahul factor work in Uttar Pradesh ?

Retirement Age After working for 38 years in Govt., I realise 60 years is perfect age for retirement. I retired as Chief Engineer and could have got a job with hefty pay after retirement. But, no I settled for 'no work only enjoy post retirement life' kind of life style. Take it from me it is the best. Do right thing at right time. Plan your family and responsibilities and leave the way for youngsters. 60 is OK to start a new life , look after your health and thank GOD for all he has done for us.
SD, a happily retired person
Govt. should always be in look out for adding more and appropriate facilities to retired officers as they have exhausted their best life period for the benefits of the Govt. honestly and with devotion. I also agree with the suggestions made.

" CVC's selection must be transparent ?"
H Kingra seems to be ignorant about government's functioning. Saxena's questions about transparency in appointment of new CVC are relevant and must be addressed. The Government of India must come out clean on the crucial appointment. Let it not repeat the mistake, it committed in the case of P J Thomas.

I agree with Pradeep Kumar regarding LTC to pensioners. The Government of India and the state governments can take a cue from the Punjab Government which pays to its pensioners LTC equal to basic pension once in 2 years. Another progressive measure the Punjab Government has taken is that it pays special allowance @ 5% of basic pay to all pensioners on completion of 65 years of age and @ 10% when they are 75 years of age.

LTC to whom ? With regard to LTC it is stated that if your parents had been doing business or were in private service (got huge amounts) and if they become dependent on their children, who are in Government service will get LTC and not the parents who were themselves in Government servant and taking partly pension. Medical benefits are also taken in a similar manner.

Speaking against transparency !
It is amazing that some people speak against transparency and free flow of information! People have a right to know how govt. functions-how appointments are decided-how empanelment takes place. Citizens can participate only when they are aware-the effort of those in power is to keep people in the dark. It defeats the purpose of Democracy but serves those against it's values.

Country lacks leadership
This country lacks leadership. As yet another series of bomb blasts rips through Mumbai, the top leadership is silent. The Government should take a lesson from the Ramdev episode where the efficacy of stern action became clear. As that episode proved, the enemy can be routed only through stern action and not through placating sounds. We perhaps need a Digvijay Singh initiative on this one too.

What is the logic behind appointing retired bureaucrats ?
Really do not know the logic behind appointing retired bureaucrats on plum posts in India and abroad. Are the in service officers incompetent? How can we expect the top bureaucrats to work without fear or favour un der this environment?
