Have they lost attraction because they are no more that lucrative as they have been earlier or there is a decline of 'nationalism' among the people of country these days. There is a shortage of over 12,000 officers at the junior and the middle rung alone in the Defence services in the country. DEBATE (2) I have stayed away from this debate so far, but now that the dregs of society have finally emerged from the woodwork to have their say, I may as well throw in my 2 paise. Why are young Indians losing interest in the armed forces? Because India is a truly a nation of ostriches. Everyone has his head in the sand, (or in an unmentionable body part). Where the armed forces are reeling from shortages, we have strategic geniuses who have never spent one day in a field area (probably the same ones who spend their work day writing boring essays on whispers about CSSS and CSS), whining on whispers, that "armed forces officers are a pampered lot", and live in "sealed cantonments" (as if civil government officers don't live in much more sealed off areas- Look at new Moti Bagh in New Delhi! A public park sealed off, and turned into a private bungalow colony for senior government officers. What used to be a park is now an area with commandos posted all around, and no public allowed to enter)!. Could any civilian last one day in the Thar desert, or in Siachen, or even jungles, or Arunachal, or any other field area? No. They scream, shriek, go on strike, don't attend work, if they are even transferred to a desk job in a part of the country they don't want to go to. Could they face gunfire, or artillery bombardment, or grenades, or IED's, without collapsing into a wall of tears? No. So how can they say that the people who are doing this work, which they would never in a thousand years agree to, are a "pampered lot"? Why are people losing interest in the armed forces? Because the armed forces get no respect, from the civilian services, and by extension, civil society. Because of people like this exemplar, who claims that armed forces are "pampered", despite the fact that they are doing a difficult job, in difficult circumstances, which none else would do.

"Taka ser bhaji, taka ser khaja...."
People have forgotten the contribution of many of those honest people who slogged day and night to ensure that CWG could be organised successfully despite initial delays but now they are also being investigated/ hounded with the same vigour as the corrupt who made aberrations in few cases all because the media made great fuss about corruption in CWG (their own motive/role also needs to be probed). Everyone knows about the level of professionalism and integrity of media in this country still it is surprising to note that course of action in the government follows the media campaign. Hope God comes to the rescue of honest officers and staff who worked tirelessly for CWG to save the prestige of the country. Now let God save theme from the harassment/ embarrassment being heaped on them by the investigating agencies whose capability is also suspect in a generalist dominated system where the jobs of highly qualified professionals are being scrutinised/audited by lower rung of generalists with no knowledge of the subject. God save this great nation.

Reservation - a major weakness
Reservation has been major weakness of political parties or democracy in India. While all the major parties do feel that 'reservation' has only divided the society, they are reluctant to talk against reservation. One could understand that those oppressed for centuries deserve better or favourable treatment after freedom. But if such protection continues even after more than half a century, it calls for introspection - either the democracy has failed or the ruling leaders have failed in doing their duties. The policy of reservation has in fact benefited only about 2% of SC/ST, which consist of those near and dear ones of ruling classes. It is strange that on the one hand we are talking of liberalization and equality, on the other every leader talks about continuance of 'reservation'. Various communities have, as a result, been exploiting the government in the name of votes. First it was SC, then ST, then OBCs, then Gurjars, now Jats, soon to be followed by Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists. It is high time that the policy of reservation is scrapped and education is made free upto graduation level. Hope emerging leaders (young brigade) would pay attention to this suggestion.

It's good for IFS cadre officers
Besides Mizoram, where for the first time an IFS officer has been made Principal Secretary we also have Ajai Saxena an IFS officer belonging to the 1984 batch who is Secretary in the Andaman Administration to a number of departments besides the PCCF who is also a Principal Secretary heading the Environment and Forest department. This augers well for the IFS cadre officers who have always been neglected by the IAS lobby in so far as such postings are concerned.

Raise retirement age
As per the wishes of few of the respondents in your columns, Government should immediately raise the retirement age of all the Government employees to 65 or even 70 years so that:
(i) Corruption could be completely eliminated from all walks of life; (ii) Poverty could be eliminated from all spheres of society; (iii) Unemployment could be completely eradicated from even the rural and backward regions; (iv) Education and health care systems could reach all the poor and vulnerable systems of society; (v) The politics could be cleaned of all undesirable elements; (vi) The industrial production could be quadrupled within next few years; (vii) In short the citizens of India can lead healthy and happy life without any unrest, violence, acrimony, communal disturbance, etc.
The Government servants will help achieve all the above goals by putting in dedicated efforts after the age of 60!! In case the age bar if raised till 80 years, the above goals would be achieved with the help of Government servants even earlier!!
Long live the aspirations of senior government servants!

Is it a conspiracy ?
What is the reason that so many so called skeletons are purportedly tumbling out of the UPA closet at frequent intervals? Could it be that there is a conspiracy to destabilise the Government and the country by the opposition or some foreign hand? Or is it owing to the perceived weakness of the Prime Minister that the allies and MPs have got out of hand? Anyway, action is being taken and investigation agencies are active and the nation has been assured that the guilty will be brought to book. Let it rest at that.

Ashutosh RTI Unnecessary transfer of application The
Commission noted that the RTI application has been unnecessarily sent to various
BDOs who have all replied that the information is not held by them. Twenty officers
of Delhi government had to attend a hearing before the CIC most of whom were unrelated
to the information sought by the Appellant. This has also lead to a delay in providing Comments It is frequently seen that transfer of the application is the first thing that the PIO does without careful scrutiny as to whether the deemed PIO to whom the application is transferred holds the information. Hopefully, the Government would find some method of ensuring that RTI application are sent to the people who have the information and not to every one since this wastes public resources and money.
