Azad is an outstanding officer

Since a batch junior officer (though equally brilliant and efficient) has become DIB, it would be in the fitness of things to make Yashovardhan Azad, DGP of Jharkhand .

Violated & eve-teased too?

We have heard our politicians expressing their anguish in and outside the parliament demanding strict punishment or death penalty to the rapist(s). I am aghast that they descend on the Venue of public protests supporting public demand of death penalty, but have not yet taken the trouble to move a Private Member's Bill in the Parliament, giving shape to such a demand. They can send a Draft Ordinance to the Home Minister or the Prime Minister with the request to promulgate it. All the women MPs, with due respect to them individually & collectively, have united in support of the Women's Reservation Bill, but never for death penalty to the rapists. In fact, in the Delhi gang ape case, one MP was quick to issue a testimonial to the Commissioner of Police. Why? Can a police commissioner survive on the strength of such testimonials? But there still is something more disturbing: compensation given or declared by the Delhi govt for rape victims: 2-3 lakhs, if death takes place it can go up to 5 lakhs. Converted to US Dollars it means 4000 dollars to 10000 dollars! Crimes against women include rape, rape & death, acid attack, flesh trade, trafficking child abuse, kidnapping, molestation etc. It needs to be highlighted that the Delhi Government is not responsible for policing Delhi- it comes directly under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Who grants the budget to the Home Ministry? Parliament, of which these women MPs constitute a very effective part. Have they ever thought of the double insult in this compensation? Are we pricing women's dignity, honour and virginity so cheap? Answer, our women MPs please !!!

M L Gupta
