Has Jethmalani conveyed a message?
Has the BJP awoken a sleeping
giant by suspending Ram Jethmalani? One thing is for sure that he won't
let the prospect of his expulsion from the BJP silence him from saying
what's on his mind. This razor-sharp legal mind has a long memory -
and perhaps an explosive dossier on BJP leaders - what will he do next
is what the BJP is worried about.
Will Congress take a risk of voting on FDI?
It is heard that this is the second time that Congress, in power, is
confronted with a situation of being voted on prickly issue (first being
nuclear deal). Those close to the developments say, no way will the
party risk voting this time.
Was Mamata politically inexpedient?
The buzz in political circles is that Mamata Banerjee should have first
written a letter to every party on FDI issue and sought a reply. This
would have increased her strength in the number of MP's that do not
support the FDI. "She chose the path otherwise and it showed how
politically inexpedient she is", says someone from Bengal who is
in Delhi and could have been a source of her support.

On pegs and holes
In a system which is marred by distortions galore, perhaps square pegs
in round holes may have to be contended with as the second best option
or as a measure of last resort. If the squares are perfect and the holes
well rounded in shape, at least they maintain a semblance of orderliness
and fair play, even if unpleasantly and inefficiently. However, when
there is a total inversion and black holes are sought to be hung on
illusory pegs which are left hanging in air, the situation
becomes grotesque in appearance and potentially catastrophic in content.
The right hand does not know what it has done and manages to find an
alibi to blame the left for doing it. Theories of comparative advantage,
core competency, motivation, self-esteem, pride, excellence, et al,
on which everyone who matters would have attended and made innumerable
presentations in exotic locations, are put on their head in application
in real life situation. The system wallows
in its mediocre triumphs even as there are wails of monumental tribulations.
Will a peg to hole ratio be the new performance appraisal parameter?
