4.5% year-on-year growth rate in Indian
economy: Dhoot (UPDATED)
ASSOCHAM President Rajkumar Dhoot said, "the 4.5 percent year
on year growth rate of the Indian economy in the October-December quarter
of the current fiscal reveals that the downslide of the Indian economy
is yet to see the bottom and hence recovery remains elusive. Thus, achieving
a growth in excess of 6 percent in 2012-13 is really going to be a Herculean
task for the nation. The only way to accomplish this is by way of revival
of business sentiments". "Given the nature of policy proposals
contained in the Union Budget for 2013-14, it seems that revival is
going to be a long drawn process unlike in the case of 2009. As manufacturing
is increasingly been turning out as lost opportunity, one has to wait
for judging the effectiveness of investment incentives announced today.
Manufacturing revival is critical for the revival of services sector
and employment generation", added Dhoot.
A pragmatic budget amidst challenging times
(UPDATED)
The Budget recognises tough global and domestic challenges- especially
on the twin deficits front and has tried to balance the responses to
these. Mrs V R Iyer, CMD, Bank of India, said that the Budget has outlined
government's commitment for fiscal prudence and at the same time providing
enough thrust to the Social sector. Stimulus given to the Capital/Debt
Markets (by hike in income limit in RGESS, introduction of inflation
indexed bonds and tax free infrastructure bonds) and the Infrastructure
sector are big positives. Special impetus to the Education, Health,
Housing (especially Rural) and MSMEs will go a long way in broadbasing
the growth. Recognising the fact that Banks should be healthy and well
capitalised, Rs. 14,000 crore has been provided for capitalisation of
PSU banks, she said. Move of setting up an All-Women Public Sector Bank
is a novel idea, which is very much appreciable. Over all, the budget
has given required thrust to the deserving sectors so that growth momentum
is built up ensuring stability, Mrs Iyer added.

Govt work can be finished daily
Government work, if done sincerely, can be finished on day-to-day basis
without the need to do it on holidays from home. At times, due to urgency,
one may have to devote 2-3 hrs extra in the office on normal working
days. That's all.

Antony will not resign
If anyone thinks that 'Mr Clean' Antony will protest and resign for
the culpability of his ministry in the recent Chopper scam, he is in
a fool's paradise. Last time he resigned as a cabinet minister 'on his
way to sainthood' was actually to torpidoe Karunakaran as CM of Kerala.
He was successful in his efforts and became CM to give Kerala one of
the weakest CMs, the state has ever seen. Now he will not resign since,
as shrewd as he is, he is fully aware that the sand under his feet has
been removed for ever by Oomman Chandy and others.
