Yes, caste system must go
I fully agree that caste system must go. Let all of us i.e. the educated
class must take a vow to work for it. My request to our SC/ST friends
is that they should voluntarily forego the benefit of reservation if
they have availed once in favour of their other friends who have not
yet got it. This will help in distribution of privileges amongst all
who actually need it.
P C Tripathi
Is there no other issue ?
The debate in your Forum on caste and reservations has been going on
for such a long period that it has become a real boring site. Is there
no other issue agitating the minds of civil servants?
Aarti Khosla
Close discussion on reservation
Some people have become abusive on this site. Otherwise, how could one
of the participants say that SC/ST's are enjoying 'muft ki roti'. Weeping
on one Sailaja does not make sense. Every SC has gone through the fate
which one Sailaja has gone through. This is also a wrong perception
that rich and elite SC/ST's are only cornering all the benefits. No
survey has been undertaken so far to prove this. Rather, most of the
civil servants among the SC/ST's have their roots in the villages and
gone through poverty, insult and dejection in the name of caste. Nobody
has a right to impose their views on others. As I said earlier, the
discussion here on reservation should be closed. This should be done
at earliest to avoid any ill feeling.

Myths are being created regarding Brahmin's hold on education
Regarding the hold of Brahmins on education, myths are being created
and history ignored. Brahmins had a hold only on traditional education.
That is Sanskrit texts. Since the advent of Muslim rulers a thousand
years ago, this hold took the Brahmins nowhere. Sanskrit knowledge and
traditional knowledge was redundant in Mughal and British India. It
was Persian education which mattered in Mughal times and there was no
hold of Brahmins on that. The only reservations during those times were
for Muslims and Mughals, Turks and Afghans etc. After the British came,
English education mattered and there was no hold of Brahmins on that
at all. In fact the orthodox Brahmins shunned such education as "malechcha".
So, either on modern English education or in modern jobs (post Muslim
and British India), the Brahmin "hold" was nil. It was open
to all Indians if it was open to any Indian. It was only merit that
counted and not caste. The only reservations were for the British. This
is how Babasaheb Ambedkar's father was an officer in the Mahar regiment
of the British Indian army. Babasaheb got an English education. The
only thing militating against the Dalits was untouchability which was
a social phenomenon. With the rise of modern education, transportation
and modern medicine, the "choot" concept dwindled and with
the advent of freedom, untouchability was abolished.

Shrinavasa Ramanujam was not banned from going to school
Thanks to someone on this board for reminding caste of Shrinavasa Ramanujam,
widely known as Mathematician and not as a Brahmin. On the question
of reservations to him as a Brahmin, let me state that in those right
to education was banned to SC/STs, it implies that being a Brahmin he
was not banned to go to the school and enjoyed the ancestral reservation
of right to education. His poverty was not a hurdle, education being
his birth right- reservation by birth. The poor SC/STs of his time were
not allowed and did not have ancestral reservation of education like
him, so they could not excel in the field of Mathematics. Friends, in
our great civilization particularly in old times, poverty was not a
hurdle, neither it is today, but caste was the hurdle. Being a Brahmin
you can give thousand examples of excelling even though being poor Brahmins
in old times because they had protection under social laws. If there
was no ban on SC/STs in those times in right to education, obviously
they would have also excelled as they are now. I agree with that Ramanujam
rose because of talent (one cannot and should not debate his greatness)
but you cannot deny the benefit of ancestral reservations to him. The
abhorrent was the ancestral reservation of Brahmins because it banned
Dalits from going to schools, the present reservation policy for SC/STs
is not abhorrent in nature because it does not bar Brahmins to go to
schools. Hence your hatred towards new reservation policy for SC/ST
is totally unjustifiable. A comparative study of both the ancestral
reservation old policy and the new policy for SC/ST as above, leaves
no room to term the latter a discriminatory in nature like the former.
R K Singh
Why Unfettered Reservation ?
The DNAs of Dalits and non-Dalits, are made of same nucleotides. What
hurts me is the discriminatory privileges permanently reserved for one
category in the name of "Affirmative Action". This creates
heart burnings and helps Indian politicians to exploit caste-based vote
banks. Let us make a beginning by abolishing the menace of casteism
in a phased manner. For instance, instead of thinly spreading the benefits
of reservation in SC/ST categories across the board, it would be meaningful
to focus these to the really disadvantaged groups at the lower echelons
by extending the principle of creamy layer to SC/ST categories too .

An eye opener
Reading about Kerala situation was very informative besides being eye
opener. National media does not talk about this. But I just want to
tell those who do not know and remind those who have forgotten the statement
of former Prime Minister who said Muslim League is communal but in Kerala
it is not so. No wonder the party still believes and follows this.
