whispers in the corridors
The West Bengal government has started weighing legal options against the direction of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to the Chief Secretary, Manoj Pant. The ECI has recently directed the Chief Secretary to order the suspension of four election officers and the lodging of FIRs against them. The Commission found the officials guilty of irregularities in the addition of names to electoral rolls in two constituencies. This action is being seen as a strong warning from the Commission to all those involved in the state’s electoral process. The issue has enhanced the tensions between the ECI and the West Bengal government. Both are on confrontational path on multiple issues and there are clear signs that the confrontation could intensify in the coming days. The ECI will wait for the Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant’s action-taken report on the issue of four officials. All governments are said to be legally bound under section 13 (CC) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 to adhere to the directives of the EC about officers who are engaged in the preparation of the rolls or conduct of elections.
