whispers in the corridors
As the Iran-US-Israel conflict enters its fourth week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has framed the West Asia crisis as a “worrisome” challenge with direct repercussions for India’s economy, trade routes, and 10 million-strong diaspora in the Gulf. In a detailed Lok Sabha address on March 23, Modi highlighted disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz—through which nearly 90% of India’s LPG imports and 12% of global oil flow—while assuring the House that strategic petroleum reserves (53 lakh metric tonnes) and diversified sourcing from 41 countries have prevented an immediate energy crisis 6551.
Inter-ministerial briefings on March 23 and 24, followed by a high-level ministerial review on March 22 chaired by Modi himself, underscored proactive steps: uninterrupted supply chains for petroleum, power, fertilisers, and LNG, plus coastal and cyber-security vigilance. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, addressing Parliament on March 26, robustly defended India’s neutral stance against Opposition criticism of alleged “Pakistan mediation,” dismissing Islamabad’s role as that of a long-standing “dalal” since 1981.67
Analysts see this as classic Modi-era pragmatism—strategic autonomy married to quiet diplomacy. By emphasising dialogue, diversification, and preparedness without picking sides, New Delhi is positioning itself as a stabilising voice in a fracturing multipolar order. Yet whispers in South Block suggest the real test lies ahead: if Hormuz remains volatile into summer, fuel prices and fertiliser costs could spike, testing both economic resilience and voter patience ahead of key state polls. The government’s message is clear—India will not be held hostage to distant fires, but proactive hedging is now non-negotiable.
