whispers in the corridors

India’s IT services sector may be on the cusp of a significant downsizing cycle, according to industry sources tracking hiring trends and deal pipelines. Top firms are reassessing workforce requirements as artificial intelligence begins to automate large segments of routine coding, testing, and support functions that once drove bulk hiring.
At the same time, geopolitical uncertainties — including slowing demand in key Western markets, protectionist policies, and cautious tech spending by global clients — are compounding the pressure. Several companies have already slowed fresher onboarding, deferred salary hikes, and quietly reduced bench strength.
Sources suggest that mid-level roles could face the sharpest impact, as firms prioritize leaner teams with niche AI, cloud, and cybersecurity skills. The traditional pyramid model of IT services, heavily reliant on large entry-level workforces, is increasingly being questioned.
While companies are unlikely to announce large-scale layoffs publicly, analysts expect “calibrated workforce rationalisation” over the next few quarters. The shift signals not just a cyclical slowdown, but a structural transformation in how India’s $250 billion IT industry operates.
