LoR for 114 French Rafale Jets to Transform the IAF's Combat Capabilities Expected in June?

India is poised to issue a Letter of Request (LoR) for 114 Rafale fighter jets from France, with sources indicating the document will arrive in June as the government accelerates the procurement process. Valued at approximately ₹3.25 lakh crore, this deal addresses the Indian Air Force's critical fighter squadron deficit—it currently operates below the sanctioned strength of 31 squadrons, dipping to around 29-30.

The acquisition is expected to include substantial domestic manufacturing under India's "Make in India" defence push, potentially involving final assembly and component production in partnership with Dassault Aviation. This approach mirrors the failed Rafale-MMRCA outcome while learning from the Tejas and Scorpene timelines.

If finalized, the deal would add roughly 12-14 new squadrons over the next decade, bridging the capability gap until the AMCA and upgraded Tejas Mk2 mature. However, delays in previous projects, budget constraints, and evolving Indo-Pacific security dynamics raise questions: Can India execute this deal swiftly enough to prevent further squadron erosion, and will domestic manufacturing commitments translate into tangible industrial capacity or become another protracted negotiation?.
