Wayanad Tunnel landslide: Keralam halts construction, orders probe & greenbelt audit

A tragic landslide at the Kalladi twin-tunnel construction site in Wayanad, Keralam that claimed the lives of five migrant workers has forced the state government to suspend all operations. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan ordered a halt to all construction activities and announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia for the victims' families, as rescue teams continued searching for missing labourers on Wednesday. A state minister openly described the fatal disaster as "man-made," prompting officials to immediately launch a detailed techno-legal investigation.

The project's contractor, Dilip Buildcon, strongly defended its position by blaming unprecedented monsoon rainfall for triggering the sudden collapse. However, district administration officials sharply contested this, stating that the company had been formally warned to stop hazardous work on June 27 due to severe environmental risks. In light of these findings, sources report that a high-level committee comprising several senior state bureaucrats is being constituted to conduct a rigorous, comprehensive safety and environmental audit of all major infrastructure projects operating near sensitive green belts.
