whispers in the corridors

To stem a sudden, unprecedented "spate of requests" for voluntary retirement and resignation, the Department of Space (DoS) has officially tightened the exit rules for Group ‘A’ scientific and technical personnel at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
An official directive issued on July 14, 2026, instructs major space research hubs, such as the UR Rao Satellite Centre and the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, not to routinely approve exit requests. This new, strategic restriction specifically targets key staff associated with the prestigious Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme and other critical national missions.
The policy shift follows reports of more than 100 key scientists resigning or opting for early retirement in recent months. Beyond managing sudden personnel deficits, government sources indicate the decision aims to prevent highly confidential, scientific research-related information from leaking or transferring abroad. Under the revised guidelines, individual ISRO centre directors no longer hold the absolute authority to sanction exits; instead, all resignation and voluntary retirement requests must now be referred directly to the Department of Space for final approval, effectively reversing a 2020 administrative order that granted them autonomy.
