India clears Vietnam’s BrahMos buy in major geopolitical push

India has cleared a key defence export deal for the sale of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to Vietnam, marking a significant strategic step in New Delhi’s outreach to Southeast Asia and its efforts to counter China’s expanding footprint in the South China Sea.

Sources indicate the long-pending agreement has now been finalised after sustained negotiations, with both sides resolving pricing, delivery timelines and platform integration concerns. The deal is expected to include shore-based anti-ship missile systems, significantly boosting Vietnam’s maritime deterrence capabilities.

The move comes amid heightened tensions in the South China Sea, where Vietnam has been increasingly assertive against Chinese territorial claims. For India, the deal reinforces its Act East policy while positioning itself as a credible defence exporter in a region critical to global trade routes.

BrahMos, jointly developed by India and Russia, is among the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles and has already been exported to the Philippines. The Vietnam deal signals India’s growing willingness to leverage defence exports as a strategic tool, deepening security partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.
